In his groundbreaking work, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith explores the intrinsic elements of human nature that connect us to the well-being of others. He famously states, How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortunes of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it. Published in 1759, this first major book by Smith was an immediate sensation, selling out upon release and maintaining its relevance for centuries. In this insightful examination of morality, Smith delves into the origins and motivations behind our moral sentiments, posing profound questions Where do our moral principles originate? Are they divinely inspired, shaped by societal constructs, or rooted in rationality? His exploration into these themes not only lays the groundwork for his later works but also sheds light on the psychological and moral framework that governs complex societies. Smith’s insights have captivated both scholars and the general public for generations. In January 1909 a friend of the Scientific American paid the sum of 500$ which was to be awarded as a prize for the best popular explanation of the Fourth Dimension. The object being to set forth in an essay not longer than 2500 words the meaning of the term so that the lay reader could understand it. 245 essays were submitted, the 500$ prize was awarded to Lieut.-Col. Graham Denby Fitch, Corps of Engineers, USA, and the essay was published in the Scientific American of July 3rd 1909. Despite the character of the subject, extraordinary interest was manifested in the contest. Competitive essays were received from almost every civilized country. Because of this unexpected interest in the subject, it has seemed advisable to preserve a few of the essays which were submitted. Prof. Henry P. Manning (Brown Univ.) has chosen essays which lend themselves best for the purpose of a popular book on the Fourth Dimension, in other words, those which present the subject from as many different points of view as possible. This book contains 22 of the submitted essays, starting with the prizewinning one, followed by three that received an honorable mention. (Summary adapted from the preface by Availle).

Explore the captivating realm of Einstein’s groundbreaking theories of Relativity, where the fabric of space bends and time unfolds in surprising ways. This insightful introduction, written by Einstein himself, unravels the complexities of Special and General Relativity, shedding light on the intricate nature of space-time and presenting a revolutionary approach to gravitation. His work sent ripples through the scientific community, leading to the profound understanding that absolute time is merely an illusion. With clarity and approachability, Einstein seeks to make these intricate concepts accessible to all, regardless of their background in theoretical physics. As he articulates, “The present book is intended, as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics.” While some ideas may challenge you, a patient reader will uncover one of the clearest explanations of Relativity available. The Nicomachean Ethics is a profound journey into moral philosophy, structured into ten books that were originally crafted as separate scrolls. This seminal work is thought to stem from Aristotles lectures at the Lyceum, likely organized for his son, Nicomachus. It draws intriguing parallels with the Eudemian Ethics, which consists of eight books, fostering a rich comparative analysis. Notably, Books V, VI, and VII of the Nicomachean Ethics correspond with Books IV, V, and VI of the Eudemian Ethics, sparking ongoing debates about their chronological order and shared themes. Aristotle emphasizes that his ethical inquiry is not merely an intellectual exercise but a call to embody goodness in our daily lives. This work transcends theoretical discourse, offering practical guidance on the pursuit of virtue. (Summary from Wikipedia)
