  • French that speaks to you.

Salut, c'est Hugo! I created this podcast in 2017 when I was teaching at the French institute in Warsaw, Poland. My goal was to show my students that they could learn French naturally simply by listening to it. 30 million downloads later, I think we're onto something!

Granted, it's not a magic bullet. This method still requires hundreds of hours of practice. That's why I'm doing my best to make these episodes as engaging as possible. I want you to get sucked into the topics so deep you forget that you're "learning French". You'll quickly realize that you're capable of understanding a lot more French than you think.

The episodes get progressively more challenging, so I'd recommend starting from the oldest ones and working your way up. From episode 92, I'm joined by Ingrid, a French journalist and teacher, for more conversational style episodes.

  • Learn from history's greatest entrepreneurs. Every week I read a biography of an entrepreneur and find ideas you can use in your work.

This quote explains why: "There are thousands of years of history in which lots and lots of very smart people worked very hard and ran all types of experiments on how to create new businesses, invent new technology, new ways to manage etc. They ran these experiments throughout their entire lives. At some point, somebody put these lessons down in a book. For very little money and a few hours of time, you can learn from someone’s accumulated experience. There is so much more to learn from the past than we often realize. You could productively spend your time reading experiences of great people who have come before and you learn every time." —Marc Andreessen

  • Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi, also widely known as Al-Minshawi, was an iconic and revered Egyptian Quranic reciter and Hafiz. Born on January 20, 1920, in El-Mansha, Sohag, Egypt, he came from a family deeply rooted in Quranic tradition; both his father, Siddiq Al-Minshawi, and his grandfather were renowned reciters. His brother, Mahmoud Al-Minshawi, also became a distinguished reciter. Al-Minshawi passed away on June 20, 1969, at the age of 49.

He is widely regarded as one of the most important and famous reciters of modern times, often grouped with other legendary figures such as Abdul Basit Abdus Samad, Mustafa Ismail, and Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, forming a quadrumvirate whose influence on the Islamic world’s Quranic recitation is immense. Nicknamed Al-Saut Al-Baki (The Weeping Voice), his recitations were known for their profound emotional depth, impeccable Tajweed (rules of recitation), and moving delivery, which deeply touched the hearts of listeners. He primarily recited in the Hafs ‘an Asim narration.

Sheikh Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi’s early education in Quranic sciences was significantly influenced by his father. He committed the entire Quran to memory at the tender age of eight. He further honed his skills and studied the rules of recitation (Ilm al-Tajweed) under the guidance of esteemed teachers, notably Sheikh Ibrahim As-Su’oodi, at a young age. He was also considered a protégé of Muhammad Rifat and Muhammad Salamah, who were prominent reciters of the 20th century. His rigorous training and natural talent led him to achieve a lofty status as a Qari, holding the title Shaykh al-Maqâri. He traveled extensively to many countries, including Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Palestine (Al-Aqsa), Saudi Arabia, and Syria, spreading the message of the Quran through his recitations.

The “Child Repeat” recordings of Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi are a special and highly valuable collection designed specifically for teaching the Holy Quran. In these recordings, Sheikh Al-Minshawi recites verses or short passages, and then a group of children or a single child repeats after him. This method, often referred to as “Mushaf Al-Mu’allim” (The Teacher’s Quran), is an exceptionally effective pedagogical tool. The purpose of these “Child Repeat” recitations is manifold: they help students, especially children and beginners, to accurately imitate the correct pronunciation (Makharij) and application of Tajweed rules as demonstrated by a master reciter. The repetitive nature of the format assists greatly in the memorization of the Quran, allowing learners to internalize the verses and their proper recitation. Additionally, the presence of children repeating the verses can make the learning process more engaging and less daunting for young students. These unique “Child Repeat” renditions highlight Sheikh Al-Minshawi’s dedication not only to performing the Quran but also to preserving and transmitting its correct recitation to future generations.

  • Most self-help advice is guesswork dressed up as wisdom. We dig into psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral science to find what actually changes lives.

    WHY LISTEN?

Over 8 million downloads because we answer the questions that matter: How do I build mental strength? What creates lasting motivation? How can I understand my own mind well enough to work with it, not against it?

This podcast is for curious skeptics who want frameworks backed by psychology studies, not Instagram quotes. Whether you're navigating procrastination, building self-discipline, or designing your own philosophy for a life well lived—we explore the hidden psychology behind real change.

    WHAT YOU'LL GET

Mental models and simple techniques from cognitive psychology, positive psychology, and ancient wisdom traditions like Stoicism and Buddhism.

Being a human can be confusing, learning about it doesn’t have to be.

We cover everything from emotional intelligence and habit formation to brain health and the nervous system.

    WHAT YOU DON’T GET

No pseudoscience. No oversimplified "hacks." No hustle porn.

Just practical insights on mindset improvement, self-development, and human psychology that respect your intelligence and mental health.

    THE APPROACH

Instead of telling you what to think, we explore how thinking works. Armed with psychology studies, social science research, and relentless curiosity, we uncover the mechanics of belief change, attitude change, and personal development.

Success is personal. You might want to leverage your neurodiverse strengths, build a business, or simply discover how to be happier. We provide the mental frameworks to pursue your definition of success with mental strength and self-care that fits your life.

    YOUR HOST

I'm Sam Webster Harris—a lifelong learner with ADHD and an obsession with finding answers to hard questions. After launching businesses, traveling the world, and nearly dying a few times, I concluded that psychology and science are where real wisdom lives.

This show is my excuse to dive deep into health and fitness research, behavioral psychology, and cool science while helping you build genuine self-discipline and motivation.

  • THE BEVERLY PODCAST is a satire of every self-improvement podcast you've ever hate-subscribed to! Hosted by Beverly Ginsberg, a self-appointed expert in all areas. (Except like, how to turn her phone flashlight off or global geopolitics and stuff.) A lifelong New Englander newly transplanted to California, Bev aims to be the next Mel Robbins--if Mel Robbins was your mother's most unhinged friend. More laugh-out-loud than actually life-improving, The Beverly Podcast covers weekly topics ranging from "aging gracefully" to "serial killers" as well as Bev's wildly active love life at age 75, the ongoing chaos of parenting her adult twin daughters Lainie and Rachelle (both 39, both single, both semi-functional), and everything in between. Mostly Bev holds court solo, spreading her wisdom cream cheese on her bagel of an audience, but occasionally she invites special guests to join her in deep diving into things like mediumship or pronouns. The show is pure, nutty chaos and you might even learn something! If you're into Jewish joy, Queer Pride, the self-care industry complex, overbearing mothers, true crime, antidepressants, multi-level marketing and/or abortions, this show is for YOU!

  • Emma is a high achieving, middle class girl from west London. She seems destined for a successful career in banking and a comfortable British life. Until she makes a decision that will come to define her. In 2001 Emma marries Bashar al-Assad - the now infamous dictator of Syria.

In the early days, people inside and out of Syria dared to hope. Alongside his beautiful, progressive wife, Bashar promised to modernise the country.

But when the Arab Spring reached Syria in 2011, Bashar's regime showed itself for what it really was: a brutal force, willing to capture and kill ordinary Syrians demanding change. And in all the years that a war raged on, Asma stands by her husband. She seemingly ignored the desperate pleas to stop her husband from killing his own people.

But what did she really know about the atrocities her husband’s government was carrying out? And what choices did she really have? Some people allege that she actually assisted the regime and cashed in on the war, that she herself is a war criminal. Others say she tried to run away but was trapped, held hostage by a regime who threatened her life and her children.

So, who is the real Emma?

  • My career is an accident. It started when I set out to rediscover my passion and reignite a spark I’d lost — and that journey led me to the work I do now.

If you know me from my books or my speaking, you know I’m fascinated by why people do what they do. What makes someone find joy and meaning in their life, or pursue something far greater than themselves?

I started A Bit of Optimism to explore those ideas and expand my own perspective. This podcast is a trove of honest conversations, with people who challenge me, teach me, or simply help me see things in a different way. Some guests are household names, and others you may be meeting for the first time. But each one of them has something to share that can help all of us grow.

So if you’re looking for a spark — some insight, inspiration, or just a reminder that good things are possible — join me on A Bit of Optimism!

    Let’s grow together.
