Happy Friday! And Valentine's Day! Sam and Emma speak with Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. Then, they speak with Rahna Epting, executive director at MoveOn, to discuss recent reporting that Congressional Democrats are frustrated by efforts to urge them to fight back more forcefully against the Trump administration. First, they run through updates on Hegseth’s struggle with diplomacy, the House GOP’s austerity push, the ICC, Elon’s attacks on the DOE, pushback to Trump and Musk, the State Department’s multi-hundred-million dollar Tesla purchase, and the role of abortion bans in increasing infant mortality, before parsing through the mass resignations and firings developing in the DOJ and the SDNY amid Donald Trump’s blatant attempt to blackmail and extort Eric Adams. Jeet Heer then joins, diving right into Trump’s ongoing attempt to “find the Bork” – a reference to Nixon’s favored DOJ sycophant – and Trump’s alleged threat to DOJ officials who won't comply with his order to tentatively drop charges against Eric Adams, parsing through the obvious “quid pro quo” at hand, not to mention the extorsion, and whether there’s any hope in looking to Hochul to help her constituents. Heer then walks through what he sees as the most egregious actions from the first few weeks of Trump 2.0, from Musk’s coup of the administrative state to the complete freeze of federal funding, and the devastating reality that Democratic leadership simply isn’t taking the destruction of the US Federal Government seriously, exploring their refusal to act with urgency or concern, or attempt to use any power outside of the courts – which have no real political consequences. Wrapping up, Jeet, Sam, and Emma dissect the emergent need for Democrats and progressives to establish an alternative communication network amid the complete takeover of governmental communication and social media by Big Tech. Rahna Epting then unpacks the role of MoveOn (and other progressive organizations) in unsettling Democratic leadership through the simple act of putting them in touch with their constituents, tackling the insanity of Democrats’ refusal to act, and parsing through exactly how Hakeem Jeffries’ claim that the party has “no leverage” is false, wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the danger of this moment, and the necessity for Democrats to take the voices of their constituents seriously.

Then she speaks with writer & filmmaker Jamie Tahsin and freelance reporter Matt Shea to discuss their recent book Clown World: Four Years Inside Andrew Tate's Manosphere. First, Emma runs through updates on the Senate’s confirmation of RFK and Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s attacks on the DOE, Israel’s escalating violence in the West Bank, the Trump Administration’s pivot against Ukraine, rocketing egg prices, Trump’s deferred resignation, NIH’s financial freeze, Elon’s NASA takeover, the transfer of low-risk migrants to Guantanamo, and Canada’s liberal resurgence, before diving a little deeper into RFK’s confirmation to lead HHS. Katelyn Burns then joins, diving right into the devastating moment of confusion and fear facing trans people in the US in the wake of myriad executive orders from Trump targeting everything from access to gender-affirming care to gender markers on federal IDs, zeroing in on the latter as she and Emma unpack how passports have served (since the Obama Administration) as a central safety line for trans people in red states, not only allowing them freedom of movement in line with their identity but providing security against employment discrimination and more. After expanding on the role of unions in bolstering protections for their trans workers (particularly in the realm of healthcare) and the genuinely dangerous implications of Trump’s executive order on the ability of the government to find and help missing trans children, Burns looks to the role of mainstream liberal media – with a specific focus on the New York Times – in taking vitriolic anti-trans bigotry from fringe to mainstream, legitimizing all of the policies that they decry as inhumane now that they’re coming from Trump, wrapping up with the emphasis that the movement for trans rights has not been radicalizing – with their asks the same today as they were half a century ago – but rather the backlash to them has. Jamie Tahsin and Matt Shea then walk Emma through their investigative work into Andrew Tate and the Manosphere, first stepping back to assess what the Manosphere is – an industry capitalizing on the alienation and isolation of young men to bring them into a sphere of exploiting women, be it the pickup artists of the aughts or the red pill influencers of today – and how Andrew Tate was able to take it to the mainstream level with the help of millions of dollars and Social Media’s obsession with controversy, pushing himself to be, at certain points in 2022, the most googled man on the internet, pushing a gaudy and extravagant lifestyle grounded in a perverse, misogynistic, and wildly patriarchal ideology. Expanding on this, Tahsin and Shea dissect the actual business structure of Tate’s empire, employing scammy and MLM-esque practices from video courses to a physical “test” in the wilderness of Romania, all built around training and ingratiating men into the world of finding vulnerable women to be groomed and sex trafficked, while his strong connections to political forces (largely the Trump regime in the US) legitimized this push to turn the aggrievements of the patriarchy into a full-scale political movement. After expanding on some of the major revelations of their investigation – from the conscious pride around the promulgation of sex trafficking tactics to the insane characters Tate surrounded himself with – Matt and Jamie wrap up with the emphasis that Tate’s scam sought not just to groom women into lives of exploitation, but young men into lives of hate, fear, and insecurity.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with El Connopcion from San Anton’ as he unpacks the fragility of fascism and masculinity, unpack Elon’s plummeting popularity, and watch Democrats pivot their messaging to the party’s… stakeholders? It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with MT Snyder, Field Examiner at the NLRB and co-president of National Labor Relations Board Union Local 20 in San Francisco, to discuss what it's been like as a federal worker given the Trump administration's constant interferences into their workplaces. Then, he speaks with Sam Bagenstos, law professor at the University of Michigan, author of the Inside/Outside newsletter, to discuss the Trump administration's executive orders and their defeats in the courts so far. First, Sam runs through updates on Trump’s inflation boom, the destruction of the CFPB, Trump’s DOGE letter, Musk’s severe lack-of-fraud, Musk’s access to the Treasury’s payment systems, Trump’s attacks on the CDC, FDA, and NIH, Trump’s spending freeze, the destruction of USAID, GOP’s reconciliation, and Israel’s inability to refrain from genocide even for the sake of ethnic cleansing, before expanding on the growing resentment among Democratic leadership that their constituents might ask something of them, and Elon Musk’s complete inability to find fraud in the US Government (despite everything the media has been saying). MT Snyder then joins, diving right into the Trump Administration’s major attacks on the NLRB, firing board member Gwynne Wilcox and leaving the board unable to meet quorum, effectively halting labor law enforcement in the US, before shifting focus to federal workers as a whole, as she walks through the major coercion and fear-mongering from the Trump administration over Elon Musk’s legally-dubious attempt to push federal workers out of the government, including highlighting the very same email Musk gave to Twitter employees upon his purchase, which, unsurprisingly, never saw its promises paid out. After expanding on the genuine pain and fear being experienced by federal workers whose livelihood is under threat, Snyder expands on the action being planned by federal unions, the importance of public support for our federal workers, and how those of us on the outside can help in this fight. Next, Professor Sam Bagenstos jumps right into the generational devastation that the Trump regime’s destruction of the administrative state is likely to create, with the process of building up these systems drastically more complicated than destroying them, before stepping back to unpack the idea that the Trump/Musk Administration is truly, and unapologetically lawless, touching on their obvious fear and impotency in the face of any pushback, public or institutional. After briefly exploring the importance of organizing and centering pushback from the public, Professor Bagenstos examines a growing tension in the administration over the legalist line of thought promulgated by Trump’s Heritage Foundation backers and the “move fast and break things” ideology of Elon Musk and Silicon Valley. Wrapping up, Sam and Sam discuss the genuine problems of inefficiency that face US bureaucracy, the importance of branding this destructive “solution” advanced by Trump and Musk as illegal, and the necessity of Democrats to get over their fear of big government.

Sam and Emma speak with Gil Duran, journalist based in California, proprietor of the website The Nerd Reich, co-writer of the FrameLab newsletter, to discuss his recent piece in The Nerd Reich entitled "'Reboot' Revealed: Elon Musk's CEO-Dictator Playbook." First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump/Elon’s abject refusal to follow court orders, the release of the White House Ethics Czar, the repeal of a ban on bribing foreign officials, the DOJ dropping its case against Eric Adams in an open case of blackmail, Trump’s gutting of the CFPB, Oregon Nurses’ ongoing labor battle, IRS and ICE, Mike Johnson’s Budget, and Hegseth’s revival of Fort Bragg, before diving a little deeper into the open insanity of the ongoing collusion between Eric Adams and the Trump Regime. Gil Duran then joins, diving right into the concept of the Network State – an idea advanced by Big Tech’s thought leader Curtis Yarvin and his billionaire buddies (Thiel, Andreessen, Musk, etc) that Tech CEOs should take advantage of the collapse of Nation States and democracy in favor of establishing corporate, CEO-run dictatorship, either by gutting and replacing existing governments or purchasing sovereign territories – as Duran unpacks his first introduction to this ideology with Silicon Valley’s attempt to hijack San Francisco's political institutions, before parsing a little deeper through the recent, much more public discussions of this theory advanced by the likes of Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, and Curtis Yarvin. After expanding on how we are already seeing the blueprint for a Network State in action, with Trump serving as a figurehead to a Tech CEO’s gutting of our administrative and democratic institutions in favor of sycophants and centralized power, Duran looks to how this came to be the active ideology of the GOP so quickly, unpacking how the collapse of the Biden campaign and naming of JD Vance as Trump’s VP opened up an opportunity for the Big Tech to step in, starting with Elon’s massive public $300m investment and culminating in Yarvin’s Reboot conference in San Francisco last September, exploring the obvious parallels between Big Tech’s dictator obsession and the GOP’s white nationalism and parsing through their unified scapegoating of “woke” and “DEI” in the leadup to the election to the point of completely dominating both mainstream and social media (bolstered by the financial leverage and ownership Big Tech has over those institutions). Next, Gil, Sam, and Emma unpack the major challenges facing the Trump-Musk regime, as Trump is on his last legs with no other favorable alternative in sight while any failure to maintain control over both political and media institutions potentially meaning a complete upending of their “progress,” not to mention the obvious lack of preparedness (or ability) for this institution to deal with any real public or institutional opposition – the latter of which seems to be particularly hopeless among Democratic leadership – wrapping up by emphasizing the genuine insecurity this regime faces in the face of public scrutiny and touching on the potential danger of Big Tech’s goal of replacing the US Dollar with Bitcoin.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Kellie Carter Jackson, associate professor of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, to discuss her recent book We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s decision to ignore the federal courts, Vought’s killing of the CFPB (and the CFPB union’s response), DOGE’s access to the Treasury’s payment systems, the USAID shutdown, Trump’s attempted worker buyout, major tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum, Steve Wynn’s SCOTUS case, NIH funding, and Texas’ measles outbreak, before expanding on the devastating impact of Trump’s attack on the administrative state considering how much of this country is either employed by the government or funded by the government. Professor Kellie Carter Jackson then joins, diving right into the conception of her work “We Refuse” amid her ruminations on the anger she felt about the failure of the 2020 protests and their ultimate “wins” to create any real systemic change, with much of America’s white majority – and certainly the political class – choosing rebrandings over relinquishing any of the power and control granted by the position and privileges of whiteness, providing no new protections for the reactionary backlash that followed, as it does any period of racial reckoning in the US. Professor Carter-Jackson then looks to the particular failure of our current conceptualization of non-violent action, reflecting on the long history of radical Black leaders – including the ones we often remember as icons of non-violence – acknowledging the importance of and employing the use of force in the fight for racial equality, before stepping back to walk Sam and Emma through the devastating breadth of what forceful resistance to White Supremacy, and its violent institutions, can look like, from the devastating choices that faced her Grandmother and Great-Grandmother over their personal freedoms well after the Civil War to the stories of Margaret Garner’s escape from slavery and Carrie Johnson’s escape from a lynching mob. Then, she's joined by Zachary Foster, author of the Palestine Nexus newsletter, to discuss Trump's recent announcements and intentions to "take over" the Gaza Strip. First, Emma runs through updates on the DOJ’s restriction on Elon & Cronies’ access to Treasury data, skyrocketing union membership among federal employers, Musk’s access to Health Payment Systems, cuts to the FAA and the destruction of USAID, the trickle of opposition from Democrats, Trump’s intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza, Trump’s ban of trans girls and women from athletic competition, US birthright citizenship, global warming, and brutal jail riots out of Congo, before diving a little deeper into the absurdly creepy stunt Trump attempted to pull with signing his most recent anti-trans legislation, and the violently inhumane response from the likes of Jesse Watters. Professor Allison Pugh then joins, diving right into the recent mass proliferation of Artificial Intelligence across industries, and the dangerous encroachment it has initiated on what Pugh has dubbed “Connective Labor” – occupations where the literal act of a human seeing another human for who they are is the underlying engine for the valued outcome for the consumer, be it education, healthcare, hairdressers, sales, securities, and on – pushing society, with help from growing feelings of alienation, into a depersonalization crisis. After briefly expanding on the extension of this intrusion of AI into necessarily interpersonal roles, Professor Pugh looks at how the AI takeover over this work has been driven by this “Moneyball”-esque, Venture Capitalist, industrial-model of efficiency stripping back entire professions to emphasize data collection and output over the actual labor (and human connection) at hand, often resulting in the full-scale degradation of these jobs. Allison and Emma also touch on the AI industry’s insistence on selling you their product as a replacement for either a more practical social alternative, human labor, or human connection, before wrapping up the interview with the overwhelming issue of Big Tech’s complete capture of our information networks, be they communications platforms, databases, or (now) academia, and what it will take to push humanity back to doing their own critical thinking. Zachary Foster and Emma then jump right into Trump’s recent declaration of intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza under U.S. control while sitting beside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, touching on the stunning revelation of the White House’s seeming internal numbers on the total Gazan death count (around 500k) as well as the ongoing struggle to survive outside of conflict in Gaza. Next, Foster dives into the extensive role Saudi Arabia plays in pushing back against the US-Israeli imperial advancements, with their outward insistence on Palestinian statehood somewhat conflicted by Crown Prince MBS’ extensive efforts to normalize relations with Israel as well as to launch Saudi Arabia into an era of “techno-utopianism,” two agendas perfectly-aligned with the Trump Administration, before touching on the stunning international solidarity being shown on behalf of Palestine in the wake of Trump breaking from Biden’s tact of *silently* supporting the ethnic cleansing. Wrapping up, Zachary looks to Israel’s ongoing military pivot to escalating violence in the West Bank, and why U.S. and international pressure has been the only thing that ever restrained the Zionist state’s repeated attempts to ethnically cleanse Palestine.

David Dayen then joins, briefly touching on the relatively rapid rise of Elon Musk to the top of Trump’s advisor team, not even endorsing him for President until mid-July yet spearheading his assault on the administrative state beginning on Day 1 of his Presidency, also touching on the lack of a true antecedent for his role in US politics before expanding on his first major project for Trump, the complete shutdown of USAID. After walking Sam and Emma through the ultimate departure of these two from the left with the mainstream liberal embrace of Russiagate and #MeToo, Eoin dives into their ultimate arrival in the media niche among the growing independent social media outlets, like Substack and Patreon, where they could publish work and cultivate a following outside of the mediasphere they’d felt so rejected by, with Big Tech backers like Marc Andreessen playing an important role in helping them thrive there, while also actively disrupting the mainstream media industry that was so keen on critiquing them. Wrapping up the interview, Eoin touches on the role Taibbi played in Elon Musk’s Twitter files, and what Big Tech’s successful media disruption can tell us about their ultimate goals for the US government.

Teresa Romero then joins, as she and Emma dive right into the recent threats mailed to various United Farm Workers locations over Trump’s incoming wave of deportations, exploring how, over less than two weeks, immigrants – regardless of citizenship – have been overtaken by an environment of fear and insecurity over their (and their family’s and community’s) safety, with no institution – from school to church to work – safe from ICE’s indiscriminate raids. Expanding on this, Romero unpacks the central role undocumented people play in the US farming industry, and the overwhelming exploitation and abuse they face without institutional backing from unions (or, in theory, the government), with growers and employers – despite their obvious reliance on the labor of undocumented folks – eager to take advantage of the increasing insecurity as Trump’s reforms come into practice, before they wrap up the free half by unpacking the need to create a genuine path to citizenship for farm workers whose presence is so important to our country.
