In today's true crime story, I tell you the case of Dena Thompson, a woman whose manipulative and ruthless nature earned her the infamous title of "The Black Widow." Born in 1960 in Heaton, North London, Dena's early life gave no indication of the darkness that would later define her. From gymnastics competitions to a promising career at a bank, Dena seemed to have a bright future ahead.
However, her life took a turn as she began a series of relationships marked by deception, theft, and murder.
Dena's first victim was Lee Wyatt, whom she married in 1984. Using forged documents, she convinced Lee that they were on the verge of a lucrative deal with Disney, only to later claim that the mafia was after them.
She then married Julian Webb in 1991, convincing him that she had cancer and needed his life savings for treatment. Julian's life ended tragically when Dena poisoned him.
Her third husband, Richard Thompson, narrowly escaped death when Dena attempted to kill him with a baseball bat and a knife.

Case 1: Vilma Ortero - Child Abuse in the Classroom
On October 23, 2024, in Deltona, Florida, a paraeducator witnessed a horrifying scene at Forest Lake Elementary. A 59-year-old teacher, Vilma Ortero, allegedly placed a three-year-old autistic boy in a headlock during story time. Despite the child's struggles and screams, Vilma continued reading to the class.

Case 2: Denise Nicole Malcolm - Premeditated Murder
On August 31, 2024, in Coral Springs, Florida, 45-year-old Denise Nicole Malcolm was arrested for the murder of her estranged husband, 52-year-old Rohan Malcolm. After an argument over Rohan's infidelity, Denise shot him multiple times.

Case 3: Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky - Shocking Medical Malpractice
On August 21, 2024, 70-year-old William Bryan was admitted to Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Miramar Beach, Florida, for what was supposed to be a laparoscopic splenectomy. Tragically, Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky mistakenly removed William's liver instead of his spleen.

In today's episode, we delve into three cases from the state of Florida. The first case involves a mother who prioritized her own desires over the needs of her toddler. The second case reveals a man who used artificial intelligence for unspeakable purposes. The final case is about a man who just can't seem to stay out of jail.
Case 1: Jessica Renteria - Child Neglect
On June 27, 2024, police in Dorrell, Miami-Dade County, responded to a call from concerned neighbors who found a three-year-old boy wandering alone at the Apex at Park Central complex. Body camera footage captured officers finding the child unsupervised for approximately six hours.
Case 2: Philip Michael McCorkle - AI-Generated Child Pornography
In late June 2024, Indian River County authorities arrested 38-year-old Philip Michael McCorkle for allegedly using artificial intelligence to generate child pornography.
The rise of AI-generated child pornography is a growing concern at both state and national levels. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, there were 4,700 reports of AI-generated child pornography in 2023 alone.
Case 3: Mark Brents - Barcode Manipulation Scheme
In August 2024, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into a barcode manipulation scheme at Lowe's stores. The accused, 57-year-old Mark Brents, was allegedly switching barcodes from cheaper products onto more expensive items, defrauding Lowe's of over $4,500 worth of merchandise. During the investigation, it was found that this wasn't the first time Mark was being arrested. How man times you ask? You'll never guess.

In today's Florida Man Friday true crime story, we delve into the case of 13-year-old Rose Dieujuste, who was found barely alive in a utility closet after being brutally attacked. On July 4, 2024, in Orange County, Florida, Rose was on her way to visit a friend but never arrived. Her friend found Rose's cell phone and shoes abandoned in a staircase, prompting a desperate search by her family. They discovered Rose in a utility closet, stabbed, partially naked, and unresponsive. Despite emergency responders' efforts, Rose died from her injuries at the hospital.
The investigation revealed a shocking sequence of events that led them to arrest of 28-year-old Jerry Dorisme, an undocumented immigrant from Haiti who had a disturbing history of violence and sexual offenses.
Despite his violent past, Jerry was repeatedly released, raising serious questions about the justice system's handling of his case.

In today's midweek mini true crime story, we dive into the case of former FBI agent Christopher Bauer, who was sentenced to life in prison for the sexual abuse of an eleven-year-old girl. Bauer's trial revealed a history of misconduct and abuse, raising critical questions about accountability within law enforcement agencies.
On August 1, 2023, in Montgomery, Alabama, 44-year-old Christopher Bauer was convicted of first-degree sodomy and sexual abuse of a child under twelve. The victim, now a teenager, bravely testified about the years of abuse she endured. Her courage to finally speak out led to Bauer's arrest and conviction.
You won't believe Bauer's defense during the trial, but it didn't work. The jury found him guilty on all counts, with Judge Jimmy Pool sentencing him to life in prison.
What makes this case particularly shocking is how Bauer managed to secure a position as an Alabama state trooper despite his checkered past with the FBI, including other accusations!

In 2022, in Brighton, UK, 54-year-old Anthony Stocks threw an eleven-year-old boy off a 100-foot cliff to sexually assault the boy's nine-year-old sister.

Lauren's father, Dr. Lance Johansen, discovered her mutilated body in the backseat of her car on July 3, 2024. This episode uncovers the disturbing events leading up to her murder, the systemic failures that allowed it to happen, and the heartbreaking aftermath.
Lauren, a bright and beautiful nursing student from Gulfport, Mississippi, had a tumultuous relationship with Bricen, a former high school football star with a history of arrests. Despite her attempts to move on, Bricen's obsessive behavior led to repeated stalking and violence. The situation escalated during a vacation to Nashville, Tennessee, where Bricen viciously attacked Lauren, resulting in his arrest for kidnapping and stalking.

Tragically, just nine days later, Lauren was found dead, her body wrapped in trash bags and a sheet. Lola James was born on September 30, 2017, to Sinead James and lived with her mother and sisters in Pembrokeshire, UK. In early 2020, reports of domestic abuse surfaced, but the pandemic lockdowns hindered proper follow-ups. Sinead met Kyle Bevan online in February 2020, and he moved in almost immediately. Soon, Lola started showing injuries whenever left alone with Kyle.
On July 16, 2020, Sinead left Lola with Kyle overnight. The next morning, Kyle claimed Lola fell down the stairs, but paramedics found her with severe injuries inconsistent with a fall. Kyle was arrested for child neglect and later murder. Sinead was also arrested but released on bail.
The trial revealed Kyle's violent history and drug abuse. Despite being educated on abuse signs, Sinead failed to protect her daughter. Kyle was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison, while Sinead was convicted of causing or allowing Lola's death and got six years.
This case highlights systemic failures, with CPS overstretched and unable to maintain regular visits due to the pandemic. Lola's death is a reminder of the need to protect vulnerable children and improve the child welfare system.
