“Satanic Panic” as we know it today didn’t see it’s height until the mid-1980’s, but in 1972, when Jeannette DePalma was found dead on the Devil’s Teeth in an abandoned New Jersey quarry, America was starting to feel this “Satanic” fear permeating the air; a fear that Satan and other unholy beings were starting to influence the “disillusioned” and “misguided” youth of the time.
After the investigation into Jeannette’s untimely death seemingly stalled, newspapers started publishing articles informing the public that her body was laying in the midst of a Satanic altar surrounded by occult symbols and relics. Worst of all, it was reported Jeannette had been a human sacrifice murdered by Satanic witches practicing black magic…
These shocking details sparked fear in locals that quickly spread across the country. But were the reported details true? Was Jeannette sacrificed within a Satanic altar by a coven of witches? Or was someone or something else to blame?

In Episode #5 of MMM, we covered the death of Nadine Gurczenski, a woman found murdered in a rural Niagara town on May 8, 1999. When we originally released the episode on June 23, 2023, it was an unsolved case. In May 2024, the Niagara Regional Police Service announced they had solved her murder.
Anyone with further information is asked to contact detectives at (905) 688-4111, dial option 3, ext. 1009060.
Members of the public who wish to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers of Niagara online or by calling 1-800-222-8477. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards to persons who contact the program with information which leads to an arrest.

Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) is notorious. It’s only 4 square kilometers in size, but it’s a dangerous place for at-risk people. For decades, the streets have been used as a hunting ground for vulnerable women. For example, Robert Pickton, one of Canada’s most heinous criminals, walked these streets in search of victims.
Massive drug operations have headquartered in the derelict hotels of East Hastings, and when enslaved drug mules or sex workers don’t pay their debts, they meet fates as heinous as being thrown out of 5- or 6-storey windows.
The DTES is a complicated, convoluted world, and no match for the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), which has proven time and again it falls short of effectively handling the cases of marginalized women who meet their demise in its streets.

Dark Adaptation's monthly segment, "Missing, Murdered, Mysterious", is designed to highlight unsolved cases of missing people, homicides, and mysterious deaths and focuses on BIPOC in North America. Today’s case focuses on a missing person named Jared Shadeed.
MMM Case #10:
In July 2023, Jared Shadeed was captured on surveillance footage leaving the Air BnB he was staying at in the Squire Park neighbourhood of Seattle, Washington. He had few belongings with him, leaving the rest of his luggage inside the share-rental. This is the last time Jared was seen.
A few weeks later, his SUV mysteriously appears in a Los Angeles neighbourhood, but there is still no sign of Jared. How did his vehicle end up 1,100 miles away? How has there been no trace of Jared's whereabouts or clues to the possible circumstances surrounding his disappearance?
His family has been desperately seeking answers for the past 10 months, but sadly, the disappearance of Jared Shadeed remains as perplexing today as it was in those early days...

Christina Kettlewell was a beautiful, promising young woman who was busy working on her career and falling madly in love with her boyfriend, Jack. The couple’s evolving romance led them to a spontaneous, maybe even rebellious, marriage. A few days after their wedding, they headed into the Muskoka wilderness to honeymoon at a friend’s cottage. The friend, Ronald, was also Jack’s roommate, and bizarrely enough, Ronald accompanied the two newlyweds on what should have been a private, romantic, getaway.
The events that took place during that fateful trip are shrouded in mystery; there’s a suspicious fire that takes down the cottage and Christina is found dead in mere inches of water.
The inquest into her unexplained death showcased dramatic theories, various versions of events, and gripping eyewitness testimonies, but the biggest question of all was left unanswered – What happened to Christina Kettlewell? How did the eight-day bride meet her fate?

In December 1910, the heiress to a perfume empire vanished from the streets of Manhattan while shopping on the illustrious Fifth Avenue.
Her disappearance left the public reeling with questions and speculations, and her family’s secrecy in handling the case only served to amplify the concerns of the mystified onlookers. The family was reluctant to engage the police in their investigation into the socialite’s disappearance, which led to a rift and an apparent power struggle between the two entities.
The actions of the family, investigators, and the missing socialite herself paved the way for a plethora of conspiracy theories, and to this day, the vanishing of New York City socialite Dorothy Arnold remains one of the most infamous missing person cases in American history.

16-year-old Mekayla Bali was last seen on the afternoon of April 12, 2016, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. That morning, she went to school as usual but left shortly after arriving. Before she vanished, she sent her friends cryptic messages, made calls to unknown recipients, and her movements through town were strange. She even returned to school briefly before taking off again. Betty watched as Peter got out of bed and headed down the stairs. She heard him answer the door saying, “Yes? Isn’t it kind of late for this sort of thing?” She couldn’t make out the response of the person at the door – she just heard a strange voice that sounded to her like a woman impersonating a man. Suddenly, she heard a pop, then a thump, then silence. In 2005, Eddie Tillman was a 14-year-old boy living in Brooklyn with his loving mother and sisters. On August 10, his mother dropped him off at summer school, gave him some lunch money, and watched as he entered the school. That was the last time she saw her son. Two months prior to his disappearance, he came out as gay and his family accepted him into loving arms. After his disappearance, his mother learned he was communicating with men online. Are one of these men responsible for his disappearance? Are the police correct when they say he ran away? What really happened to Eddie Tillman?
