In this meaningful and heart-stirring conversation, author and speaker Jennie Allen shares the heart behind her first children’s book, What to Do With Your Worried, Whirly Thoughts—a beautifully illustrated tool for kids struggling with anxious thinking.
Jennie reveals how the mental health crisis, particularly among children, compelled her to translate the message of her bestselling adult book Get Out of Your Head into a form accessible to young readers. In this thought-provoking episode of Crosswalk Talk, we welcome Ross Douthat — New York Times columnist and author of the new book Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious. Ross sits down to unpack why he believes our increasingly secular, spiritually curious culture is primed for a fresh conversation about faith, purpose, and the supernatural.
From the decline of New Atheism to the rise of mysticism and UFO fascination, Ross explains how modern science, cultural trends, and existential questions are driving people back toward religious belief — or at least a deep curiosity about it. He shares how his new book serves both the skeptic and the believer, offering intellectual, philosophical, and spiritual footing for anyone navigating doubt, deconstruction, or cultural confusion.
Key Takeaways:
Why Ross believes we’ve passed the peak of New Atheism and are entering a new spiritual curiosity.
How mysticism, New Age practices, and even UFO obsessions reflect a deeper human longing for the divine.
Why Christianity should both acknowledge and wisely engage with supernatural phenomena outside the faith.
How modern physics and consciousness studies have strengthened — not weakened — the intellectual case for belief in God.
A candid conversation on deconstruction movements, particularly within evangelical and Catholic circles, and how believers can find a solid foundation through uncertainty.
Ross’s forecast for the “weird” decades ahead and why grounding yourself in life’s ultimate questions matters now more than ever.
Notable Quote:
"There’s a God-shaped hole because there’s a God — and filling it with anything else, even other supernatural forces, might not have your good in mind." — Ross DouthatResources & Links:

Michael: Hey, Dallas, welcome to Crosswalk Talk. Thanks for joining me.
Dallas: It’s a pleasure to be here!
Michael: Faith-based projects rarely receive the kind of mainstream attention that The Chosen is getting. What does it say about the show's impact that it is reaching beyond the walls of the church?
Dallas: Yeah, what's really beautiful for me to see, just as a consumer and as a believer, as someone who's grown up in the church and has grown up as a consumer of media and lover of the arts, every now and then, I'm able to separate myself from this and go, I'm standing in the middle of Times Square right now, and Annie Leibovitz's photography about a Jesus show is dominating Times Square for an hour. Or I'm sitting at home and I'm watching the Tonight Show, and Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, is on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon talking about Jesus and talking about the story—that's really cool to be part of. But it's just cool as a human being, and I think that it speaks to God doing something in the hearts and minds of people. And I think The Chosen has had something to do with that, yes, but I think we've also been the recipient and the benefactor of something that God is stirring in people's hearts.
Michael: Let me do my next question because it does seem that we're seeing signs of the movement of the Spirit in our culture, whether it be college campuses, sports, entertainment world. Do you sense a spiritual awakening in our society? And if not, how would you interpret that?
Dallas: Well, I think that the evidence of a quote, unquote, spiritual awakening is when Jesus and the Bible are being talked about in popular culture without apology, right, without some sort of disclaimer. It's just become a recognized part of the culture. And I think that's the first step that doesn’t mean… and I can't speak to what's happening in the hearts of everybody, and I don't—whatever church they choose to go to, or whatever God is doing in their personal lives is not up to me and not my business. But it's certainly clear that when people feel like they have the permission, even if they're not believers, to talk about and to listen to Jesus stories or gospel messages, and they're treated as though they're just as a legitimate part of the pop culture conversation as anything else, that's an extraordinary thing to witness. And so I don't know necessarily why or how it's happening. I just know God’s doing something, and it's really cool to watch.
Michael: Well, as our culture grows increasingly dark, how do you see The Chosen being used to spread light and hope?
Dallas: Well, I think the answer, in some ways, is in the show itself. When you watch the show, The Chosen captures the darkness that was taking place 2000 years ago. And I think when people see reflected that 2000 years ago, the people and the time were actually similar to today—tribalism, division, pandemics, fear, rejection of the other, rejection of things you don’t understand. That was happening 2000 years ago, and there was an answer for it. It's happening 2000 years later, and there's an answer for it, and it happens to be the same.
Michael: Season five includes the Last Supper, as seen many of us know from this, you know, iconic painting. How did you go about approaching this from a biblical perspective and bringing in that scene to life?
Dallas: Well, it's a biblical perspective in the sense that I'm expanding on what we've seen in the past on a painting by using words from scripture, of course, and there's chapters dedicated just to what Jesus said at the Last Supper. But I think that what I'm doing that I hope puts a spotlight on the truth of what Jesus said in the gospels, and perhaps some understanding that maybe we lack when you just read the words on the page. You don't have the Jewish context. You don't have the historical context. And there's some theological truths that we know the disciples might not have fully understood at the time. So my job when I'm portraying this scene is to make sure that you're there, that you feel like, okay, these words in Scripture that are beautiful, they weren't just a speech he was giving to a crowd. They were words being delivered from a teacher to his students, from a friend to his brothers. That I think adds weight to the scene and understanding to the scene that we don't get necessarily just from looking at a beautiful painting.
Michael: What is the overall theme of season five?
Dallas: Can you trust? Can you follow? Can you have faith even when you don’t understand? Judas didn’t understand, so he rejected, and he took it on himself. The religious leaders didn’t understand, so they eliminated. We still do that today. Can we find a way to still trust, to still follow, to still have faith, to put aside maybe our own expectations, even when we don’t fully understand?

Michael: Hey, Ellie, welcome to Crosswalk Talk. Thanks for joining me.
Ellie: It’s a gift and a joy to be here today.
Michael: Ellie, you have a new book, Spring Sings, by B&H. This is your fourth children's book. We all know you as a singer and songwriter, but you're becoming a prolific children's author. I'm excited about that. I don't want to steal your thunder here. I loved reading this book, reading about this book. I love the pictures. So what inspired you to write this book, Spring Sings? What's it about, and what do you want parents to know about it?
Ellie: Yeah, so Spring Sings is an Easter book, but I've been calling it an all-seasons book because I think if there's any time that we need the message of the hope of Easter, it is in the winter months that feel just gray and cold and long. Seasonal depression sets in, and you know, it just... So I actually remember talking with my editor. She's like, "You can't have too many winter spreads in this children's book, Ellie." And I'm like, "I know, but the whole thing is..." Spring Sings is really a book about the song that creation sings every year that reminds us that death is never the end of the story because of Jesus.
It's really fun to work with an illustrator like Laurana to illustrate that underneath winter, there's buried spring gold. My hope for the book is that it would help kids and the adults in their lives literally look out the window in the spring. I love that Lent stretches over winter and spring; they would look out the window and see evidence of the Gospel story literally outside. We get to tell that story with words and pictures, and then as a singer-songwriter, with melody as well. I've loved playing the song from the book every night on tour, and it’s so much fun.
Michael: I love how you're teaching people that nature preaches the Gospel. It's beautiful. I say that because I still have a little snow on the ground as we're talking right now.
Ellie: (laughs) I know! You're like, "When is this going to end?"
Michael: I love this book. It’s going to be 70 degrees here next week, so we get to learn the lessons of what you're talking about. There's a seven-track album as well, right?
Ellie: That's right! It will be out on the first day of spring, around March 20 or 21. The single is already out, so if you have the book, you can sing along with it, which is really fun. I think this is one of my favorite kids’ records that I've ever made. Writing this book has brought me hope, especially after experiencing some heavy things during the winter seasons.
Michael: Can you share more about those experiences?
Ellie: Of course. For several years now, I've faced heavy things—like COVID hitting right before spring in 2020 and a tornado that hit Nashville, which was terrifying. We also lost our niece last February to pediatric cancer. Writing this book during those deep grief seasons has been medicine for my soul. The way the earth preaches the story of new life has been healing.
Michael: The book is Spring Sings. Is the album also called Spring Sings?
Ellie: The album is called Sing Spring Songs. I have a series: Sing Creation Songs, Sing Remembering Songs, and there's a Christmas one called Sing Joy Songs. Who knows, maybe one day there will be a Spring Sings covering Sing Spring Songs!
Michael: (laughs) You've got me laughing! What does your typical songwriting process look like?
Ellie: I love this question! A lot of times, it starts with a melody for me. My husband calls me a modern-day psalmist because I sing my way through sorrow. Sometimes I won’t know what I need to say, but I’ll know the melody that helps heal my heart. It usually starts with a melody or a scripture I read. I’ve been like this since middle school. When I read God’s word, I want to sing it. There’s so much inspiration right outside your window, and I wrote almost all the songs for this record in two days, which is bananas!
Michael: That’s amazing! I tell people that if you want to learn about a subject, get a children's book because it simplifies complex ideas.
Ellie: Exactly!
Michael: You come from a music family. Your father is music producer Brown Bannister, and your husband is Drew Holcomb. You've sung Christian music and mainstream music. What are your thoughts on categorizing music by faith?
Ellie: It’s a both/and situation. I resonate deeply with what Toby Mac says about labels sometimes pushing away potential fans. If you're following Jesus, one of the joys we have is to be bridge builders. I’ve seen that songs—whether they’re Christian or not—connect people’s stories.
Michael: It seems like there’s a trend of mainstream artists also being Christian artists.
Ellie: Yes! Drew often says, when you go to a restaurant, you don’t ask, “Is this a Christian restaurant?” You want to know if the food is good. It’s about making excellent music that speaks truth and beauty.
Michael: There are many artists right now who are blending these worlds.
Ellie: Exactly! Music connects us all. It’s not just about the label but about creating music that resonates with the human experience.
Michael: Final word for you, Ellie. What do you want parents to know about Spring Sings and why should they check it out?
Ellie: I hope this book plants seeds of hope, beauty, and truth in kids’ hearts. It should spark conversations about new life happening in their hearts and in the world around them. It’s easy to see chaos, but there’s also goodness and kindness. My hope is that this book helps families look for beauty and cultivate it in their communities.
Michael: Thanks so much, Ellie!
Ellie: Thanks for having me, Michael!
