  • This week, we're breaking down some of the most common forms of hidden dieting behaviors that we see in our work. Because even when we've started to disengage from the concept of dieting for weight loss, some of these behaviors can stick around & have a pretty significant impact on our relationships to both food & our bodies. As always, noticing these things is the first step to making changes, so in this episode we're: identifying 10 common hidden dieting behaviors (plus a bonus behavior that ties them all together!); discussing the origins of these behaviors & how they might be keeping us stuck in diet culture; and offering a framework for how we can recognize sneaky diet behaviors that might not be on this list.

  • In this solo episode Mary addresses 3 common fears (or myths) surrounding weight gain inlcuding:

"Gaining weight is unhealthy, and losing weight will make you healthier."
"If I gain weight, then I won't be attractive (and no one will like me and I'll die alone)."
"Gaining weight means you've 'given up on yourself,' 'let yourself go,' or 'gotten lazy.'"

  • Trigger warning: This episode describes eating disorder thoughts and behaviours, including mention of specific foods. I think these are fairly stereotypical of someone suffering with anorexia and I would like to keep the episode as unedited and real as possible, so I decided to keep these descriptions in the episode.

In this episode I speak to Caroline Drummond-Smith, who after suffering from anorexia for 30 years made a full recovery and is now a health coach, who helps others to have a healthier relationship with food. I hope you find this episode relatable and inspirational. We speak about

    - Caroline's childhood and risks factors for anorexia

    - how she used restriction to feel in control through the ups and downs of life

    - marriage, pregnancy and raising 3 children with anorexia in the picture

    - living in denial, being un-engaged with treatment and finally the decision to recover

    - our thoughts on how long it takes to recover from an eating disorder

    - tips for developing a more positive body image

    - a practical exercise to help you reach the all-important decision to recover

  • Part 2 with Emma Green. We round up Emma's story (carrying on from part 1/Ep 8) and discuss if it's healthy to be vegan (i.e., not eating meat, fish, eggs, dairy, honey) during eating disorder recovery. Emma took the decision to cut out animal products (including in make-up, clothes etc) during her recovery and is still vegan today, where-as I was vegan for a while, but have gone back to eating some animal products!

This episode has some great questions to ask yourself surrounding your reasons for cutting out animal products and how to eat in a way that supports your mental and physical health.
