The Context of White Supremacy (C.O.W.S.) Radio Program welcomes Gerald Van Dusen. A professor of English at Wayne County Community College District in Detroit, Michigan, Van Dusen's scholarly interests include American literature and culture and local history, as well as digital technology applications in higher education. Gus hoped to discuss his more recent book on White Supremacy and housing, Detroit’s Birwood Wall: Hatred & Healing in the West Eight Mile Community. However, Van Dusen has written more than one book, and Gus was careless when nabbing literature. I mistakenly grabbed Detroit’s Sojourner Truth Housing Riot of 1942: Prelude to the Race Riot of 1943. This book is set during World War II and the great migration. The Religion of White Supremacy was way more important than an "all hands on deck attitude" to neutralize Nazi Germany and Adolph Hitler. We will make certain to relate these events to this weekend's carnage in Buffalo, New York. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. George Hutchinson. The Newton C. Farr Professor of American Culture at Cornell University, Dr. Hutchinson examines 19th and 20th century American literature and culture - especially in relation to White Supremacy/Racism. He has a special affinity for Walt Whitman and the Harlem Renaissance. While reading Essie Mae Washington-Williams's memoir, Dear Senator. She talks about Nella Larsen's famed novel, Passing, but also provides details about Larsen's life and times - including her time as a nurse at Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee. This inspired Gus to checkout Dr. Hutchinson's biography of Larsen, In Search of Nella Larsen: A Biography of the Color Line. We'll discuss his extensive research of this reclusive literary figure. Like Essie Mae, Larsen also has one White parent and one non-white parent. Racial Classification Confusion is on ample display in both ladies's writing. We'll discuss Dr. Hutchinson's use of incorrect terms such as "color line" and get his thoughts on the recent adaptation of Larson's Passing into a major motion picture. Dr. Hutchinson demonstrated his commitment to White Supremacy/Racism by leaving in the middle of the program. He provided a wealth of fascinating responses in his brief time with us. The Context of White Supremacy hosts The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We’ll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS In New York City, Frank R. James, a 62-year-old black male, is in custody as the alleged shooter on a Brooklyn subway earlier this week. Thankfully, no one perished, but nearly two dozen people were injured from gun fire, smoke inhalation, and fleeing the chaos. New York City, like many other major U.S. cities, has reported an increase in gun violence over the two years of the pandemic, and this is dramatic emphasis of the problem. In Michigan, none of the Whites accused of plotting to kidnap and execute Governor Gretchen Whitmer have been convicted - two not guilty verdicts and two mistrials so far. Meanwhile, Patrick Lyoya was fatally shot in the back of the head by a White Grand Rapids enforcement official. We also discuss the conviction of Ed Buck. A power-broker for the Democratic party, Buck was sentenced to thirty years for drugging, killing and sexually violating black males.
