My guest today is Tapiwa Nyakauru originally from Zimbabwe but now living and studying in Ireland. In this episode, Tapiwa shares that his parents were the major motivating factor for him to get into STEM. His academic journey was not an easy one and he gets into detail about some challenges he overcame to be where he is today, a PhD student in molecular biology. He is working on a project that focuses on the identification of genes in water hyacinth and water lettuce which are plants that are responsible for the accumulation of heavy metals from water. Tapiwa tells us more about his involvement in this project and its importance. Lastly, I discuss with him how he navigates his PhD s journey especially when things become challenging in his academic life. In particular, we discuss the implications of the pandemic to his research and how that was handled especially the work from home transition. Tune in as we hear about all this and so much more.
