Spelade

  • What pace should we use to reach our audience in various situations, and how can we improve our communication using variations of pace? Christine explains how variations of speed, accented syllables, consideration of our listener and our environment can all affect proficiency of communication when it comes to pace.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Speaking too slowly causes a sense of monotony and boredom to the listener. The points being made may not be heard as a result. I often have to speed up YouTube videos.Speaking too fast becomes garbled and hard to follow, losing your audience and creating irritation or even insult. The choice of pace is affected by how we feel. When we are excited we speak faster, when less energised we talk more slowly, with less enthusiasm. Consonant clusters, new and borrowed words and phrases make articulation difficult when speaking a different language. Consider the acoustics of the room you are going to speak in before deciding on pace. Think about the people in your audience, their language, age and capacity.Consider consistency in your rhythm, slower for the more important words and faster for prepositions and articles.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I’m referring to pace in English. In a future episode, we will explore the fascinating features of pace across languages.’

'Speaking rate needs to be adjusted to different audiences. When we're not used to certain accents, our brains can't process what's being said as quickly.'

‘We can also show when we are being reflective or trying to remember something by using a slower rate.’

‘You’re Polish, used to speaking to Germans. Your German counterparts are used to your accent and speaking pace. Then, you go into an American company to talk to people in Southern America. On top of not being used to your accent or rhythm, they may have an unconscious bias that fires immediate judgement when you speak.’

  • Christine explores the legend of St. Patrick, whose legacy turns rivers green, sees parades held all over the world, and tourists, donning bunches of shamrock, flood the streets of Dublin on St. Patrick's Day to find the best pint of Guinness.

Where was Patrick really from? Was he really as saintly as the archives would have us believe? Did he really drive out the snakes and "free" Ireland, or would we have been better off without him?

As Spring Equinox approaches, explore the lore of Ireland's patron saint and decide which Irish traditions you'd like to keep.

  • Speaking in public is necessary for daily life, especially if you own a business. Despite this, public speaking fear is the number one phobia in the USA. Is it really a fear of speaking, or is the panic we experience masking something else? Christine explores speaking fear, and shares some untypical techniques to conquer speaking anxiety.

    CHRISTINE REVEALS:

How to reframe your perception of fear, and preempt panic. Why laughter really is "the best medicine." A relaxation exercise you can do before meetings, presentations and events to manage speaking anxiety. How to detach and distance yourself when sudden panic hits.

    BEST MOMENTS

"Speaking fear is more common amongst women and young people."

"Fear and excitement fire in the same region of the brain. Both trigger an energetic response in the body, but there's no tiger in the bushes anymore."

"Laughter can disarm fear by releasing endorphins, reducing stress hormones and balancing the heart rate and blood pressure."

"In many cases, women, particularly those in industries that have traditionally been male dominated, fear making mistakes in meeting rooms and boardrooms, during presentations and talks, because the men may look down on them as unprofessional and incapable. This happened to me."
