When Jimmy Wang Yu died on 5 April 2022 at the age of 79, Jackie Chan took to his social media accounts to pay his respects, stating that "the contributions you've made to kung fu movies and the support and wisdom you’ve given to the younger generations will always be remembered in the industry." But Wang Yu's legacy is a complicated one. Despite being a huge Hong Kong martial arts star in the 1960s and 70s, his international status has now been overshadowed by his contemporaries - especially Bruce Lee - and his infamous off-screen antics have, particularly in Asia, threatened to overwhelm his cinematic contributions. However, he unquestionably remains one of kung fu cinema's most influential figures; Shaw Brothers' first martial arts star whose break-out role in the wuxia classic, 'One-Armed Swordsman' (1967), helped it to become the first Hong Kong film to gross HK$1m at the box office. His pioneering directorial debut, 'The Chinese Boxer' (1970), is credited for being the first empty-hand kung fu movie - a runaway hit which saw the martial arts genre move away from the traditional swordplay films which had made Wang Yu a household name, and paving the way for the kung fu boom of the 1970s. The film was also the catalyst for the rebellious star to break his contract with Shaw Brothers, an unprecedented move which saw him work with the rival studio, Golden Harvest, and relocate to Taiwan where he was allocated the freedom to write, direct and star in many of his own productions, including the fan favourites 'One-Armed Boxer' (1971), 'Beach of the War Gods' (1973), and 'Master of the Flying Guillotine' (1975). Joining me to look back over the colourful life and career of the late Jimmy Wang Yu are the writer and film historian, Samm Deighan, and the Asian cinema expert, Frank Djeng. We dive into Wang Yu's early life and interests, his cinematic inspirations, his notorious private life and affiliations with criminal gangs, and we select our favourite Wang Yu movies. Samm Deighan is a Philadelphia-based writer and film historian, author of 'The Legacy of World War II in European Arthouse Cinema' and a presenter on the cult film podcast, 'Twitch of the Death Nerve'. Frank Djeng is an Asian cinema expert based in San Francisco.

Episode 4 : Une emprise de violence et de terreur
AVERTISSEMENT : Cet épisode traite directement des crimes de sang et de la violence exercés par Gurmeet, et en particulier des cas de castrations forcées.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh prend la tête de la Dera par la violence, et c'est par elle qu'il assoit et maintient son pouvoir. Derrière l'image publique de leader religieux et caritatif, se cache une réalité de terreur et d"intimidation derrière les murs du campus de la secte. Dès les années 1990, Gurmeet s'efforce de doter la secte d'un bras armé capable d'imposer sa domination sur la région, avec des méthodes qui dépassent toutes les limites de l'abjection.
Dans la seconde partie de l'épisode, nous revenons sur le film MSG - The Warrior Lion Heart 2, qui achève la mue ultra-nationaliste de Gurmeet dans le personnage qu'il incarne. Le sage oecuménique des débuts cède la place à une brute épaisse et satisfaite pour qui aucun sort n'est trop cruel pour ses ennemis. Un nanar d'une rare débilité, mais surtout un film dans lequel Gurmeet tombe le masque et laisse libre court à ses fantasmes de violence et de mégalomanie.

Episode 3 : Le gourou joue et perd en politique
En 2007, le gourou Gurmeet Singh commet une erreur fatale, qui peut-être plus que toute autre va aboutir à sa chute.
Dans la première partie de cet épisode, nous plongeons dans l'écheveau des factions politico-religieuses en Inde pour raconter comment une provocation de Gurmeet lors d'une cérémonie est dénoncée comme un blasphème par les autorités sikhs orthodoxes et débouche sur des affrontements violents entre fidèles des deux religions. L'affaire remonte au niveau national et les différentes formations politiques indiennes se retrouvent sommées de choisir entre les deux camps, tandis que Gurmeet essaie de louvoyer d'un bout à l'autre de l'échiquier politique avec une maladresse qui serait comique en d'autres circonstances.
La seconde partie chronique MSG 3 - The Warrior Lion Heart, peut-être le plus nanar de la filmographie du gourou. Gurmeet abandonne le biopic pour se lancer carrément dans l'heroic-fantasy, affrontant hommes-lézards et armées d'éléphants dans des combats homériques à maines nues, et convoquant aussi bien des figures mythologiques indiennes que des martiens fluorescents pour se poser en héritier et égal des plus grands héros du pays.

Quatrième et dernière partie de CAPTURE MAG - LE PODCAST : ÉPISODE 35 consacré à John Carpenter ! Pour cette conclusion, on repart du très controversé LOS ANGELES 2013, qui divise déjà au sein de l'équipe pour continuer sur VAMPIRES, GHOSTS OF MARS, deux épisodes de MASTERS OF HORROR et enfin THE WARD, le dernier film du maître, qui date de 2011. Difficile de prétendre que cette fin de carrière est à la mesure des débuts du réalisateur, et notamment des fulgurances des années 80. Pour compenser, Stéphane Moïssakis, Rafik Djoumi, Julien Dupuy et Arnaud Bordas ont invité Julien Dunand au micro de cet épisode. Ce dernier est venu partager quelques savoureuses anecdotes autour de John Carpenter et de son documentaire BIG JOHN, réalisé en 2005 !

Episode 2 : Dans les ténèbres de la "Gufa"
AVERTISSEMENT : Cet épisode traite directement des viols commis par le gourou Gurmeet Singh, pour lesquels il a été condamné définitivement à 20 ans de prison.
Sur le campus de la Dera Sacha Sauda, il y a un lieu où très peu d'adeptes sont admis : la "gufa", ou caverne, est l'appartement privé du gourou Gurmeet Singh. Son entrée est située au bout d'un long couloir, agencé pour préparer le visiteur à rencontrer un saint homme, et tapissé de photos de Gurmeet avec des hommes puissants. Pour les fidèles, y être reçu est un honneur insigne. Pour les femmes qui travaillent pour la secte, l'endroit a plus l'aspect d'une porte vers l'enfer, car c'est là que Gurmeet a commis ses agressions en toute impunité pendant des décennies.
La première moitié de l'épisode consiste en la chronique de MSG - The Messenger 2, 2e film de Gurmeet Singh dans lequel il se met en scène venant au secours de peuples adivasis, ou aborigènes, du nord de l'Inde. Il le fait avec tellement de subtilité que cela lui vaudra un procès des personnes concernés, le film étant finalement interdit dans trois états.
La seconde partie revient sur les crimes commis par le gourou contre les femmes en décrivant son mode opératoire et les méthodes qu'il emploie pour forcer les victimes au silence.
