Check out BIMM, Ireland's music school (it's not really like Fame, allegedly). Step Up: High Water starring Jade Chynoweth is really, really good. I promise. Watsky: Moral of the Story is a good song to listen to (on repeat) when you're worrying about what other people are doing (unlike Erica, who's focused on her own sh*t).

The really good book I was reading while I was on a date (and wanted to get back to) was NK Jemisin's The Fifth Season, which I would really recommend. "Women are happier without children or a spouse." Read all about it in the Guardian. That "Millennial Burnout" article I'm always on about is here. *** Would you like to hear more from me? • We've all done our fair share of job interviews – but what have we learned? And what do we say when asked what our worst traits are?!

Sisters Beatrice and Rosemary Mac Cabe sit down to talk about their interview experiences. Some that were good, some, er, that resulted in someone walking out of the room. Plus: the job Beatrice lasted less than 24 hours in before walking out due to her principles. Yes, "principles".

Plus, there's a dramatic mid-episode ordeal that involves Beatrice leaving the room. You. Just. Wait.

  • As self-confessed cry babies, Beatrice and Rosemary know a thing or two about crying: on the street, in the office, on those frustrating occasions when people throw pennies at your face…

We sit down this week to chat about crying: the politics of it, the gendered nature of opinions around crying, whether or not you should ever cry at work – and how you should react when someone else does.

We'd love to know about you: do you frequently, or have you ever, cried in an inappropriate setting?! Tell. Us. Everything.

  • In this episode of Not Without My Sister, we take a walk down memory lane and discuss our secondary school experiences. Beatrice's seemed largely (if you'll excuse the pun) around her great stature and a traumatic P.E. experience, while Rosemary was more preoccupied with boys (shocker) and why her teachers didn't want to be her best friends.

There are a lot of references, weirdly, in this episode – perhaps because it's about education. Who knows! Anyway, in case anything piqued your interest . . .

  • Friendship: it may feel like the most natural thing in the world, but it is NEVER the most straightforward! We sat down and talked about all of the big friendship moments: making friends, keeping those friends and, when the time comes, letting those friends go (or being let go!). We've had quite a few experiences of friendship breakdown and, let us tell you, it never gets easier.

  • In this episode of Not Without My Sister, the podcast, Beatrice Mac Cabe and Rosemary Mac Cabe invite you to relax, pull up a chair, as they proudly present: their Dad.

Philip Mac Cabe is a man of many talents – when he's interested in something, he will absorb every single possible available diode of information about it, and then he'll go on a further deep dive to get some more. He does have his limits, mind you: making sensible decisions when faced with possible burglary, for example, wouldn't be his forte; nor would giving medical advice or offering any form of diagnosis. Impressively, he has never allowed those limitations to stifle his efforts. In this episode, we chat through his skills and foibles, the moments we've been proud of him and the other moments where we've been, well, less proud.

    Things we mention:

Beatrice begins – insultingly – by referring to a book and TED talk by Tomas Chamorro Premuzic. The TED talk is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeAEFEXvcBg and the book, Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?, is on Amazon here, but you may also be able to order it into a bookshop near you: https://amzn.to/2YNGeND Dad's hydroponic plant growing / watering tower he 3D printed is a little like this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2916221The Wives by Tarryn Fisher was not what we expected: https://amzn.to/34RfLT0Dr. Death, a podcast from Wondery: https://wondery.com/shows/dr-death/House, one of Bea's favourite shows, featuring Hugh Laurie: https://amzn.to/3beaTbHJeeves & Wooster by P.G. Here's your opportunity to trace the route she took on her career in fashion design.Beatrice graduated from her joint course in History of Art and Fashion Design at NCAD in the very early 2000s.
