In the second Molly book, we learn 7x8 and who we can appreciate. Molly’s plucky scheming streak continues when she refuses to take part in a group knitting project. Eventually, she surrenders and learns a lesson about allies and how to befriend an Alison. In our coverage, we continue to grapple with the great existential question of what it means to be a Molly, and much more. Tune in for our discussion of education in the 1940s, nationalism, and lessons not learned on this season of Bachelorette.

After a long hiatus we are back with a much anticipated look at one of the most feared diseases of all time: rabies. We cover everything from its evolutionary history to its massive case fatality rate, from why it makes you slobber so much to how Pliny the Elder thought you should treat it (spoiler: don't try it at home, folks). Sit back with a foam-topped quarantini in hand and enjoy our first episode of season 2.

This Urban Legends Hotline episode features listener Brandon's inquiry about the legend of the Jersey Devil, a cryptid that has haunted the Pine Barrens of New Jersey for three hundred years. We will explore the various historical events that produced this creature's folklore: a dime museum's elaborate hoax, a radical Puritan woman said to have birthed a monster, a bitchy Quaker feud rife with satanic accusations, and the impoverished people of the Pine Barrens who helped cultivate the tale as a mode of protection.

AFTER SHOCK: This 1970s rockstar biopic of a man whom we can all agree should be deeply reviled isn’t a new or shocking concept in America, the country with the world record for serial killers in the last 100 years. Zac Efron's sculpted and lovable Ted Bundy personifies an ongoing American obsession with this allegedly handsome killer turned celebrity, a man who confessed to 30 murders and brutal sexual assaults. What does it mean that these boogeymen for which we carry pepper spray, check our backseats, and deadbolt our doors have also become our sex symbols and household names? And what of women who love serial killers? How different are we from them when we cannot seem to look away?

American Hysteria presents the AFTER SHOCK, a follow-up minisode to the main episode before it, basically The Shit They Didn't Show or From The Cutting Room Floor. We'll cover one interesting story every other week. This episode is about 'griefbots,' a new form of AI that app developers are creating. By scouring social media posts and text messages of deceased persons, they work to design chat bots that loved ones and future generations can actually interact with. One developer is even offering a way to contribute to a future digital version of yourself, that could live on long after you die.

When a flame-haired pawnbroker named Jabez Wilson seeks Sherlock Holmes's help, the great detective finds himself drawn into one of his most peculiar cases yet. Wilson tells an extraordinary tale: for two months, he was paid handsomely to copy the Encyclopedia Britannica as part of a mysterious organisation called "The Red-Headed League”. But Holmes suspects there's more to this bizarre scheme than meets the eye. With his suspicions aroused by Wilson's unusually accommodating young assistant, Holmes begins to unravel what may be an elaborate criminal conspiracy.

For the season two premiere, we are exploring the rich American history of Spiritualism, a massive 80-year trend of popular culture lasting from the Civil War to the Jazz age in which mediums began speaking to, and then speaking for, the spirits of the dead. A sudden craze of magical, fun, gross, and sexy parlor room séances swept the nation, materializing during the awe-inspiring age of invention and scientific inquiry. But the movement also had a political side; for the first time women were given a voice for social and political change, a voice that just happened to be channeled from beyond the veil. How they used that otherworldly voice, however, was both revolutionary and problematic, much like the progressive movements we experience today.

This week we pay tribute to one of the gnarliest diseases of all time, and the only human disease that's ever been eradicated (thus far). That's right, people- we're talking smallpox! It's gonna get grody. Smallpox has a depressing history, a fascinating biology, a moderately uplifting present, and a precarious future. We'll cover it all.

Sarah and Mike talk about what America forgot — and never learned — about history’s most famous intern. Digressions include generational resentments, 1990s fashion and off-brand colleges. Also, Mike’s microphone breaks about 25 minutes in, so he sounds like he’s recording in a submarine. Sorry!

In this Samantha spinoff, we were so pleased to be joined by Rebecca Brenner Graham, a D.C. based historian. An expert on the postal service, Rebecca studies the Sunday mail service (which was a thing until just over 100 years ago!) as a way to understand religion-state relations in the 1800s. Rebecca will take you to Such Great Heights and give you a whole other understanding of mail as a function of democracy and friendship culture. This episode also includes our take on Courtney Moore, a Pacman-loving American Girl from 1986 released this month.
