We fully recognise that you don’t learn to coach by reading a book; you have to practice coaching to improve your craft.
However, we have both read a vast array of coaching books and have another sizeable collection on our Kindles, waiting for us to find the time to explore. We also have our favourites that we continue to dip into to remind us of theories, tools and techniques that we have encountered.
In addition, we love a good book recommendation, and are often asked for them by our trainees. So, in this episode, we are exploring some of the books that could be added to your ‘to be read’ list, in relation to different coaching approaches - and we throw in a few extra tombs that aren’t really coaching books, but we love them!

Issues around confidence come up in the coaching room regularly. And it’s a common topic that new coaches want to understand more about working with.
Feeling more confident takes time, and arguably more than time spent thinking about it. You might be wondering what approach to use, what tools might be helpful, and whether asking questions really can unlock the secrets of feeling and acting in a more confident way?
In this episode we explore how we might work with coachees to help them take steps to understand and improve their confidence and find out what Helen’s top tips are on this intriguing topic.

We have previously discussed Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC) on the podcast and touched on a couple of the useful coaching models that originate in this approach. In this episode we explore the SPACE model, which is a great tool for helping coachees to dive into the way that they’re perceiving their situation and allowing them to gain some perspective.
The SPACE model, often referred to as the hot cross bun model, is an accessible tool that can inform our coaching questions, helping our coachees to explore the ways in which they’re reacting to events. It can also be used explicitly to support coachees to find new ways to see their world and explore different ways of being in the future.
Listen in while we take you through this simple yet powerful model.

From a ‘walk and talk’ in nature to the metaphors of the landscape, coaching outdoors means many things to many coaches. In this episode Helen interviews Anna-Marie Watson, host of the Coaching Outdoors podcast about this multi faceted approach to coaching and how she got started with it.
An ex-Army officer, Anna Marie is never happier than when she is outdoors. She is an accredited coach and coach supervisor who loves to move her coaching away from a Zoom window and the confines of four walls and take her conversations with coachees into nature.
Join Helen and Anna-Marie as they explore coaching through an alfresco lens and offer a different, airier, perspective on coaching conversations that we hope will pique your interest and generate some new thinking about the way you coach.
And of course, if you want to give it a try, you can join us in some outdoor coaching on the eve of our coaching conference in April 2025.

Many coaches consider themselves to be intuitive coaches? We see it quite a lot in marketing literature and on social media. But what does it really mean in the coaching room? Is it really a phenomenon?
Here at Your Coaching Journey we have had some interesting discussions on the topic of intuition over the years and we don’t always see eye to eye. Tom takes more of a psychological approach to life and coaching and Helen is more at home in the world of spirituality, so there are some differences in the way we approach intuition.
That said, there is some common ground, and in this episode we share our thoughts, have a healthy debate and see where we end up in our thinking about being an intuitive coach.

It’s time for another set of questions sent in to us by listeners.
In this episode we are going to be talking about helping clients to move on from past situations they find themselves ruminating over, how to improve your reflective practice as a coach, and how we feel about setting clients ‘homework’ or activities between their coaching sessions with us.
We love to receive your questions about coaching so do keep sending them to us.

Perfectionism is a phenomenon that can easily get in the way of our progress, and can certainly impact our sense of achievement, satisfaction and overall wellbeing.
For your perfectionist coachees, they are likely to see the drive to be perfect as a good thing that has rewarded them in the past. They probably thrived during their education and in their careers because they are high-achievers.
They probably wear their perfectionism as a badge of honour.
But all is not necessarily well in the world of perfectionists.
In this episode we explore how Perfectionism might show up in the coaching room, how it might be de-railing some of our coachees and leading them to have a sense of low self-worth. Hopefully, after listening to our conversation, you might be able to recognise when perfectionism is emerging in the coaching room.
You’ll then be able to work with your coachees to help them overcome this need for everything to be perfect, find some self-compassion and to celebrate times when good enough is good enough.

In a bid to help our coachees generate new thinking, it might be useful to introduce them to a coaching tool called ‘The Six Thinking Hats’, which was created by Dr. Edward De Bono, a Maltese physician who is probably best known for introducing the world to the concept of lateral thinking.
In this podcast episode we explore what ‘The Six Thinking Hats’ offers to the world of coaching and give our thoughts on why it is such a useful model to generate new thinking and new perspectives in the coaching room.
We even play out a little vignette of a coaching session for a GP looking to introduce a new initiative into her practice. I don’t think we’ll be winning any awards for our acting, but it might help to hear how the thinking hats could be used.
Edward De Bono’s hats were, of course, metaphorical, but the use of actual hats is always optional.

We believe that coaching is all about helping our coachees to generate new thinking. However, in order to generate new thinking, it’s useful for our coachees to know what they’re already thinking and what has led them to tell the stories they’re telling.
There is power, wisdom and insight sitting within the stories our coachees tell, as well as contradiction, tension and dissonance, if only we took the time to really listen and be truly present.
Narrative coaching taps into our coachee’s storytelling, seeking to uncover the beliefs, the assumptions, the internal struggles and the different parts that they are playing. Through this fascinating approach to coaching, we can start to explore the tales our coachee’s tell and start to discern what is a helpful story and when, perhaps, a better, alternative story might be advantageous for the coachee to tell.
In this episode of our podcast, we explore what narrative coaching is, where it comes from and how it can be used when helping coachees to explore the situations they face and the stories they are telling themselves.

We love that coaching helps our coachees to generate new thinking. If you’re self-aware as a coach and continue to engage in reflective practice your coaching conversations are going to help you to develop your own thinking too.
But what happens when your unconscious thought processes start to get in the way of your own performance in the coaching room, and your coachee’s unconscious prohibits their ability to think through their situation in an open and expansive way.
In this episode we explore unconscious bias and how the phenomenon might impact us as coaches, as well as limiting our coachee’s ability to do some really good thinking. The problem with unconscious biases is that we don’t know we have them, even though we recognise that other people are subject to them; a phenomenon known as the bias blindspot.
We believe that unconscious bias is a fascinating subject to shine a light on and to identify some rather interesting specific biases. So, we’ll be doing a little bit of that as well as exploring how we, as coaches, can remain open to the possibility of us bringing our own biases into the coaching room. We’ll also discuss how you are able to introduce the idea of unconscious bias to your coachees, allowing them to consciously bring some of their own biases to light and start to unpick them. Awareness is the first step to being able to mindfully dispel some of our more unhelpful unconscious thinking.
We hope you enjoy the conversation and that it starts your own journey of self-discovery around your unconscious biases.

Our social connections are vital to our wellbeing as human beings. Every model of wellbeing has relationships as one of its components but it very rarely gets talked about directly with patients, clients or coachees. We talk about physical health and mental health, but social health tends to get overlooked.
Much of the deep thinking that’s been dedicated to the issue, from Aristotle to Brené Brown, recognises that it’s the deeper connections that we have with people that are the most important. But how do we talk to coachees about their social health and support them in giving thought to navigating their relationship landscape and strengthening some of those human bonds.
In this episode we explore some of the research and developing ideas around social health, We also discuss ways in which we might start to have meaningful conversations with our coachees about their own social health.

Mindfulness has been a bit of a buzzword in recent years, however, the idea of mindfulness and the practice of meditation has been around for thousands of years. How does it fit in with coaching? And how can you utilise it in the coaching room, for your coachee or for your own benefit?
From stepping into a non judgmental space, creating a vision for the future, and generating new perspectives, meditation and mindfulness can be gently powerful.
Following on from episode 83 where we explored the Transpersonal Coaching approach, in this episode Helen will take us through some ideas to inspire you to try a bit of meditation and mindfulness in your coaching practice, and top tips to take on board as you get started.

Transpersonal Coaching, which is often referred to as Spiritual Coaching, sits on the periphery of mainstream coaching, and is often regarded as a little bit too woo for some coaches to consider.
In this episode we explore what it is, what it’s not and what it could be. We also consider why some people might choose to engage with Transpersonal Coaching, either as a coaching approach in its own right, or as an approach to borrow from, weaving elements of it into an integrated, holistic approach.
With a long held interest in exploring various spiritual philosophies, and developing her own beliefs and spirituality, Helen introduces the key themes of this approach and gives us her thoughts on it. Tom will offer his own perspective and some gentle challenges to the concept of Transpersonal Coaching.

Having trained over 250 doctors to coach and with another 50 or so currently participating in our training programmes, we have noticed that they do have some wonderful transferable skills. We’ve also noticed that most of the doctors that come to learn to coach have some common challenges that crop up for them when it comes to learning to coach.
Some of these challenges stem from the personalities of our coaching doctors and some stem from their education, training and the constraints of the system they work within.
In this episode we follow up on Episode 78 of the podcast where we explored Personality Profiling. We talk through some of our observations of the challenges that stem from the personality differences and individual working styles of those that we train. Tom also has some interesting statistics to share about our coaching doctor population.

Jo is a former Emergency Medicine Consultant now working as a career and life coach for doctors. She works with doctors in training in her local professional support and wellbeing service and runs a business delivering workshops and coaching for hospital consultants.
Helen caught up with Jo to find out about her journey into the world of self employed coaching, her favourite coaching tools and questions, and what learning to coach has given her. Jo also has the unique perspective of having trained with us whilst also participating in an ILM5 coaching course, and shares some of the differences that she found between the two.

Values are an important aspect of coaching and integral to increasing a coachee’s self awareness and sense of identity.
When responding to questions about values a coachee may not be able to tell their coach instantly what their own values are. It may take some reflection of them to come up with them. Their values may not become apparent until they are challenged or trampled on. Alternatively, they may be keenly aware of their most important values and actively seek to live a life aligned with them.
We know that working with a coachee around understanding what their values are and how they are showing up in their life, can have a dramatic impact on their views of the world, and themselves, as well as the coaching outcomes they achieve.
In this episode we explore what values are, why they’re important, and how to work with them in the coaching room.
