From there, we dive into Julian’s story: In 2021, he came home with shocking news—he’d been fired without warning. This unexpected blow sent him into a deep depression and an early midlife crisis. We unpack what that challenging season looked like, how Julian worked through bitterness, and what it felt like to return to the place where he was fired—for a work event, no less.

Are You Approaching Your Marriage the Right Way? Marriage is a beautiful journey, but it can often be challenging. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to lose sight of the spiritual aspect of marriage. This post dives into the importance of approaching your marriage with the right mindset and tools, focusing on the biblical values that can help foster a healthy and fulfilling relationship. Understanding the Spiritual Aspect of Marriage Marriage is designed by God to be a good thing. However, in a society that often overlooks biblical principles, we can forget this truth. The enemy, as described in the Bible, seeks to destroy what God has created for good. This means that when we enter into marriage, we must be aware that challenges will arise, often stemming from spiritual warfare. It's crucial to remember that the enemy hates healthy marriages. When two people commit to loving each other and serving God together, they become a powerful testimony of God's faithfulness. However, over time, we may start to view our spouse as the enemy. This shift can lead to fighting the wrong battles and creating division in our relationship. Recognizing the Real Enemy Many couples find themselves in a cycle of conflict where they perceive each other as adversaries. This dynamic often stems from frustrations and misunderstandings, leading to a focus on the symptoms of deeper issues instead of addressing the root causes. The real enemy is not your spouse but the spiritual forces that seek to undermine your marriage. When conflicts arise, it's essential to take a step back and evaluate the situation. Are you fighting against your spouse or addressing the real issue at hand? Recognizing that the enemy wants to sow discord can help you shift your perspective and approach your marriage with understanding and compassion. Using the Right Tools for Your Marriage Just as a gardener needs the right tools to cultivate a beautiful yard, couples need the right tools to nurture their marriage. God has provided us with everything we need to create a thriving relationship, but it's up to us to utilize those tools effectively. This includes prayer, communication, and spending time in the Word of God. Many people approach marriage without using the proper tools, leading to neglect and discontent. We often hear about high divorce rates, even among believers, which highlights the need for couples to actively engage in their relationships. It's essential to commit to using the right tools consistently to build a strong foundation. The Importance of Communication Effective communication is vital in any relationship, especially in marriage. Couples need to establish an environment where open and honest dialogue can take place. This means setting aside time to discuss feelings, frustrations, and goals without the pressure of immediate conflict. When disagreements arise, approaching them with a mindset of collaboration rather than confrontation can lead to more productive conversations. Instead of pointing fingers and assigning blame, use "we" language to emphasize shared responsibility. This fosters unity and helps both partners feel heard and valued. Embracing Simplicity in Marriage In our quest for a fulfilling marriage, we often overcomplicate things. The reality is that many of the actions that can lead to a thriving relationship are simple yet powerful. For instance, being quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger can significantly impact how conflicts are resolved. Sometimes, the simplest actions yield the most profound results. Consistently practicing small gestures of love and appreciation can create a more robust emotional connection between partners. Remember, it's the small, everyday actions that contribute to the overall health of your marriage. The Role of Patience and Perseverance In our instant gratification society, many couples struggle with patience. We want quick results and immediate satisfaction, especially when it comes to resolving conflicts. However, it's essential to recognize that building a strong marriage takes time and effort. Investing in your relationship means committing to the long haul. When challenges arise, remind yourselves that perseverance is key. Trust that the efforts you put into your marriage will pay off in the long run, even if you don't see immediate results. Bringing God into Your Marriage To truly thrive in your marriage, you must make God the center of your relationship. This involves praying together, seeking guidance from the Word, and inviting God into your everyday conversations and decisions. When you prioritize your spiritual connection, it becomes easier to navigate the challenges that arise. Many couples neglect this aspect, only turning to God when they need something. However, a proactive approach to spirituality can strengthen your bond and provide the wisdom and guidance needed to overcome obstacles.

Welcome back to another insightful discussion about marriage and mental
health. In this blog, we will explore the importance of taking care of
oneself in order to nurture a thriving relationship. Our journey through
personal experiences will provide practical insights that can help you
navigate similar challenges in your own marriage.
Taking a Break for Self-Care
After a long summer break, we've returned with renewed energy and plenty to
share. The summer can be a hectic time, especially for parents, as children
are home and activities abound. However, it’s crucial to carve out time for
self-reflection and personal health. Sometimes, stepping away from
commitments allows us to recharge and realign our priorities.
As parents, we often find ourselves caught up in entertaining our kids,
which can be exhausting. The return to school provides a much-needed
respite, allowing us to gather our thoughts and focus on our well-being.
This time can be used to reflect on our personal lives and the health of
our marriages.
Understanding the Importance of Mental Health
Throughout our podcast, we emphasize the significance of mental health in
fostering a healthy marriage. It’s essential to recognize that being
mentally healthy as individuals contributes to the overall health of the
relationship. During our break, it became clear that prioritizing
individual well-being is not just beneficial but necessary.
One of the key aspects of mental health is recognizing when we need to step
back. For me, it was a time to acknowledge my struggles and take a break
from public engagements. This decision stemmed from a desire to be
authentic and not present a false front to our audience.
Addressing Personal Battles
During our hiatus, I faced significant challenges with my mental health.
After discontinuing medication that I had been on for years, I experienced
a whirlwind of emotions and symptoms. It was overwhelming, and I realized
that I needed professional help.
Seeking assistance from a psychiatrist opened my eyes to the possibility of
undiagnosed ADHD. This revelation was both liberating and daunting. The
stigma surrounding ADHD often leads to misconceptions, particularly
regarding its impact on women. Understanding that my struggles were linked
to this condition was a pivotal moment in my journey.
The Role of a Supportive Partner
Having a supportive spouse during tough times is invaluable. My husband
played a crucial role in my healing process. Instead of pushing me to “fix”
my problems, he provided a safe space for me to express my feelings. This
kind of support is essential in any marriage, especially when navigating
mental health challenges.
Communication is key. Asking open-ended questions and showing genuine
concern can help create an environment where both partners feel safe to
express their struggles. It’s important to recognize that the person
experiencing mental health issues may not always be able to articulate what
they need, but being there for them is a powerful gesture.
Finding Hope and Understanding
As I delved deeper into understanding ADHD, I discovered that it often
coexists with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Learning about
these connections provided clarity and a sense of hope. Instead of viewing
my condition as a limitation, I began to see it as a part of who I am that
can be managed and embraced.
Throughout this process, I experienced a range of emotions—from relief to
sadness. It’s essential to acknowledge that this is a journey, and healing
takes time. With the right support and resources, it is possible to find
freedom from the burdens that mental health struggles can impose.
Embracing the Journey Together
In marriage, it’s vital to remember that you are a team. Facing challenges
together can strengthen your bond. Rather than allowing frustration to
drive a wedge between you, choose to support one another through the ups
and downs.
When one partner is struggling, it’s easy for the other to feel helpless.
However, showing up for each other—whether through simple gestures of
affection or open conversations—can make a world of difference. Remind your
partner that they are loved and valued, regardless of their struggles.
Moving Forward
As we continue our podcast journey, we are committed to being more
consistent in sharing our experiences and insights. We encourage our
listeners and readers to engage with us, share their thoughts, and suggest
topics they would like us to explore. Together, we can foster a community
that prioritizes mental health and healthy relationships.
In conclusion, taking care of your mental health is essential for a strong
marriage. By prioritizing self-care, seeking help when needed, and
supporting each other through challenges, you can build a resilient
relationship that thrives even in difficult times. Remember, it’s okay to
seek help, and you don’t have to navigate these challenges alone. -
In this episode, we get very real and vulnerable about mental health and how it affects our marriage. Brittany shares about how she has recently had some setbacks with her mental health journey and what that has been like for her. We talk about how mental health has impacted our marriage and how a spouse can support their husband or wife who battles with mental health.
We have learned so much over the past 18 years of marriage about mental health and how to navigate it and see victory and how to be a supportive spouse. When you are married to someone who deals with mental health, it requires a great deal of grace and patience and it is not an easy space to be in. We want to encourage you that you can do it, and that we know that it is extremely difficult, but that you have an opportunity to advocate for your spouse and to remind them of who they are and what life can be like for them.
In this episode, we share practical and spiritual tips and encouragement that we believe will be beneficial to you whether you are the one who deals with mental health or your spouse struggles. Mental health is not your identity and we want to join you in believing that your best days are ahead both as an individual and in your marriage.
Mental Health is hard and we want you know that you are not alone. It’s your time to let go of shame, fear and defeat and walk in freedom, levity and light!
Here are a few tips we share:
1)Seek Outside Help
2)Speak the Truth in Love
3)Encourage them to do things that they love, this creates safe places for them
4) Remember who you married and that current struggles are temporary.
5) Self-care so you can take care. Take care of you so you can take care of them.
We wanted to give you a resource with scripture to help equip you to speak truth over yourself or your spouse.
We urge you, if you are struggling with mental health, seek medical help and talk to your spouse.
We believe in you!
