She shares her identity crisis on social media and the struggle to find her authentic online presence. Sarah explores the use of AI tools in podcasting and the importance of balancing AI-generated content with human finesse. She also provides tips for improving social media presence, such as focusing on quality over quantity, being authentic, engaging with the audience, diversifying content, and offering value. Sarah concludes by inviting listeners to share their thoughts on AI and suggest topics for future solo episodes.
THIS BLURB WAS WRITTEN BY AI! I did that on purpose this time. But to add to the episode:
It takes A LOT of work to a) stand out in social media or podcasting and to b) to find your authentic voice in those places. This was an episode inspired by a silly trend that ended up having a real, true impact on confidence and self-worth. To anyone that finds themselves in a similar position, please send in your thoughts!

  • Host Sarah Burke revisits a conversation with Olympian Alysha Newman from August 2021, shortly after the Tokyo 2020 olympics didn’t go as planned…
Alysha Newman went to Tokyo only three months after suffering a concussion. She had some recalibrating to do dealing with both the physical and mental effects of her brain injury.
The now 30 year old from London Ontario is smiling ear to ear three years later…after not only winning the bronze medal in women’s pole vault, but also becoming the first Canadian woman to medal in the pole vault! She's actually the first Canadian athlete to grab a medal since the 1912 Stockholm games. And as most would say, you should be focused on competing with yourself….well she did that too. She beat her own record by two centimeters. So if you want to twerk in celebration after numerous setbacks…go right ahead.
At the time this episode was published, Alysha was the Commonwealth Games champion in the women’s pole vault (she set a Games record at the 2018 competition with a 4.75m jump). She represented Canada at both the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, also placing fifth at the 2019 World Championships.
Alysha shares her experience with injuries, mental struggles, and the importance of self-care in high-level competition. She discussed the importance of self-care, mental health, and balancing education with personal aspirations. The conversation also touched on the importance of balancing personal brand and business partnerships, and the need for longevity, consistency, and authenticity.
Alysha was born and raised in London, Ontario, plying her trade as a competitive gymnast before a back injury forced her off the balance beam and into track & field. Alysha is a graduate from the University of Miami where she became a six-time NCAA Division I All-American and currently lives and trains north of Toronto in Caledon, Ontario.
We talk about her passion for working with brands that align with her values, being kind to your body and mind, and being transparent about difficult times as an influencer. I reference this Instagram post from August 3rd, 2021:
"Directly from me to you all, here is my truth of 2021. It was a absolutely sh*t year for me on the track. Completely opposite to my dreams and goals I put out for myself. Everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong.
You could look at my 2021 year and say I hit rock bottom in my pole vaulting career or you could say damn Alysha, look at the mountains, obstacles and sh*t you put up with. It wasn’t easy, it was really hard on my family, my coaches and especially me and my mental health."

Late in ‘88 is a podcast that explores the blurred lines of truth and memory as two grade school classmates share their experiences of growing up queer and gender non-conforming in Calgary, Alberta 1988, at a time when there wasn't language to describe identities that were fringe and undefinable. The series will welcome many special guests and experts including gradeschool classmates, professors, doctors, and experts in their fields.

Since coming out as queer in 1996 at the age of 16 and later in 2020 as non-binary, Bronwin has fought hard to be a much-needed and outspoken champion for diversity and equity. Their dedication in fighting for systemic change has led them to serve on several music and creative industry boards, pushing DEI initiatives, creating inclusive spaces, and bringing more opportunities for 2SLGBTQIA+ people.

  • This week's guest is Ziya Tong, an award-winning author and broadcaster, best known for her work with Discovery’s flagship science show, Daily Planet, and NOVA ScienceNow on PBS. She is the author of the best-selling book The Reality Bubble, which was shortlisted for Canada’s most prestigious non-fiction literary prize, and won the Lane Anderson Award for best science writing. Ziya served as the Vice Chair of WWF Canada and currently serves as a trustee of WWF International.
Ziya co-directed a new documentary called Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics with Ben Addelman, and she stars alongside Executive Producer Rick Smith.
"We live in a time where some of our greatest threats are invisible. Like the climate crisis, microplastic pollution cannot be: it spans the globe, chokes up rivers and animals, and insidiously infiltrates the human body. As a science journalist and author, I have been reporting on the threat of plastic for almost two decades and believe that now more than ever, we need to reveal the connection between planetary health and human health, which is why I’ve put my own body on the line for the “Plastic People” project. As part of my journey, I will test my own home, my own food, and even my own feces for microplastics. We are very fortunate to also have a world-first for this project, as we meet surgeons and scientists who are probing the human brain to reveal whether microplastics can cross the blood-brain barrier. The results of testing here will be incredibly significant."
Ziya discusses her experience premiering the documentary at South by Southwest and the positive reception it received. She explains that the threat of microplastics is similar to the climate crisis in that it is invisible to the naked eye. She also shares some shocking findings from her research, including the presence of microplastics in the human body and the intentional spread of microplastics in the food chain. She also talks about her experience as a first-time filmmaker and the challenges she faced as a director.
Ziya also discusses the challenges of dealing with misinformation online, the experiences of women in the media industry, and the importance of supporting upcoming female journalists. Ziya mentions Sarika Suzuki and Severn Suzuki (David Suzuki's daughters) as women she admires in the media.
Ziya and her team are still raising money for the documentary's impact campaign and they plan to release a podcast to delve deeper into the dark secrets and stories of the plastics industry. You can support the campaign HERE.

Jada Watson is an assistant professor of Digital Humanities in the School of Information Studies at the University of Ottawa. She also coordinates Digital Humanities programming for the Faculty of Arts. She has taught both in the School of Music and is the coordinator for the Digital Humanities program and her research reflects this intersection.
Principal Investigator of the SongData project, her research aims to harness the potential of music industry data to study how popular music genres form, develop and change over time. Centered on issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in country music, her research focuses on interpreting the “Big Data” emerging from the popular music industry's efforts to track radio, streams, and sales (and ultimately capture revenue), in the current regulatory and media environment.
This research has been featured in national and international publications, as well as in media outlets such as Apple Country Radio’s Color me Country with Rissi Palmer, the New York Times’s Popcast, CBC's The National and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Findings emerging from SongData projects have been cited as a major source in a report submitted to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission in response to the National Association of Broadcasters' proposal to deregulate radio ownership, as well as in a Grammy Recording Academy report on inclusion and diversity in the music industry. In 2020, she was a research partner on CMT’s EqualPlay initiative.
Much of her research is available publicly via SongData.ca. She has written for various news outlets (including NBC’s Think series, Nashville Scene, The Nashville Briefing, and Toronto Star) and has spoken to industry audiences at MusicBiz, SXSW, Triple A radio’s NonCommvention, and Country Radio Seminar. Her work on representation in the industry also appears in Popular Music & Society, Popular Music History, and American Music Perspectives. She has chapters in several edited collections and is co-editor of Whose Country Music? Genre, Identity, and Belonging in Twenty-First Century Country Music Culture, a collection of essays on country music in the twenty-first century with Paula J. Bishop (Cambridge UP).

  • In celebration of International Women's Day, host Sarah Burke shares a solo episode announcing the Women in Media Network. On the three-year anniversary of the Women in Media Podcast, today, Canadian media personality and producer Sarah Burke is excited to announce the launch of the Women In Media Network. The Women in Media Network (WIMN) is a new home for women and gender-diverse podcasters on a mission to uplift, inspire, and empower.
Her story, spanning over fifteen years in media, is not just her own, but a mirror to the experiences of countless women in media. Facing challenges that are all too common – being undervalued, underpaid, and often belittled in male-dominated workspaces, Sarah took matters into her own hands with a goal to bring others along.
What first began as a single podcast where media personalities could share their stories and celebrate their successes without judgment, now holds a guest list of 75 incredible women and gender-diverse individuals and has bloomed into a collective of aligned minds. This led to the birth of WIMN, an organization dedicated to empowering women through podcasting, content creation, and education within a supportive community.
Burke’s vision for WIMN is more than just an advocacy group; it's a movement. “It's about transforming the media landscape into a diverse and equitable arena where women's voices are not just heard, but are influential,” explains Burke. “The media landscape is in a perpetual state of turbulence right now, and I’m excited about empowering creators with newfound freedom from the organizations they were once tied to, and the power to make decisions regarding their content.” Burke plans to expand the network with a special dedication to help eliminate financial barriers and empower Black voices, Indigenous voices, and other voices of colour.
Burke’s commitment to this cause is not just about challenging the status quo, but rewriting it. Under her leadership, WIMN serves as a sanctuary to amplify underrepresented voices, share wisdom, and create a better future for content creators in the process. Sarah's journey and the work of WIMN hope to light the path for a future where every creator maintains ownership of their own content, unencumbered by the barriers of the past.
The WIMN is proud to amplify charitable initiatives in support of organizations which provide support to women and girls who have been subjected to violence, trafficking and/or homelessness. In honour of Women’s History Month, Sarah will be donating proceeds from WIMN merchandise to The London Abused Women Centre, in the community where she not only studied media, but became a media personality. Stay tuned for more about merchandise, but for now, Sarah encourages donations to the London Abused Women’s Centre HERE, and also to the Assaulted Women’s Helpline, a free, anonymous telephone line for women in Ontario experiencing any form of abuse.

  • Joanna Roman is the head designer at Chronic House Jewellery, the first female partner with Chronic Ink, and one of the most sought-after tattoo artists! I’m sorry to break the news that her wait list is often a year long! 'JoJo' started as an apprentice seven years ago and was determined to pursue art for profit. In what is typically a male-led industry, Roman worked hard to earn her title as the micro tattoo goddess. She is the first female owner of Chronic Ink - an award-winning tattoo shop with multiple locations in Toronto and Vancouver, and now an international expansion to Las Vegas.
In this episode, Joanna will talk about her experience from ‘being on top of the world,’ and living her dream, to being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. She discusses how she became a tattoo artist, and expanding Chronic Ink internationally. Joanna also talks about Chronic Ink’s values and their commitment to giving back. Joanna also shares her experiences as a female tattoo artist and touching moments with clients including Nelly Furtado. The conversation highlights the influence of strong and independent women in Joanna's family, their successful careers, and the impact they have had on her.
She opens up about living with Crohn's disease and how it led her to start Chronic House Jewelry. She says, “I think anyone who's dealt with a chronic illness will understand the toll it takes on you. But thanks to my family, friends, and clients. They have given me the strength to fight back…This is my attempt to be reborn. This is where I say fuck you to Crohn's. I want to feel like myself again. I want to feel alive. I don’t want to feel caged to my bed and watch life pass me by. I just want to design things and spread my art all over the world. I hope you like these pieces because for me they are more than just jewelry. Butterflies are my most requested designs and I want these butterflies to make people feel alive.”
“My papa was a huge inspiration in this line. He loved to sing in his church choir and he was always so proud of me. And whenever I felt down, he would always remind me 'Joanna, you are marvelous." So, I hope this jewelry makes you feel marvelous too.”
