    About Joy

    Joy Zhao, AVP, Advanced Analytics and High-Performance Computing. In her role in the Enterprise Analytics Office (EAO), Joy acts as a key liaison to the Telematics teams. She oversees modeling efforts for the most demanding business applications requiring extremely high-performance and/or extreme computing for statistical and machine learning models (e.g., telematics).

    Joy holds an MD in Preventive Medicine and a PhD in Epidemiology. She joined Nationwide in February 2017 as a Director of Data Science. Before that, she worked at Chase for 5.5 years, following the Nationwide Children's Hospital Injury Prevention Research Institute and the University of Texas at San Antonio. Joy has led and delivered projects to support businesses at NF Retirement Solutions, Investment Structured Product, Commercial Small Market Underwriting models, and most recently EAO Telematics models. Joy had a great impact in forming ONE team and fostering broad collaborations on telematics efforts. Among all the accomplishments of the team, the delivery of the new version of Nationwide’s SmartRide Mobile Model enabled the new features of the product, improved customer experiences, and adopted the advancement of technology through the deployment. She also designed and launched the Data Science Learning Curriculum, the early version of Data Science & Advanced Analytics Learning.

    Joy lives in Dublin, Ohio with her family. In her personal time, she spends time coaching professionals to reach their potential as a Trained and Professional Certified Coach (ICF PCC) for Leadership. She's held over 35 webinars in the last three and a half years to help people in the community, reaching an audience of more than 6,000. She likes to read, travel, watch movies, listen to music, and spend fun time with her family and friends.

    Leah Bowers is a solution-driven data strategy analyst with 7+ years of computational research and data analysis experience. In grad school, Leah led a graduate rights group that developed a survey assessing how chemistry and physics students and postdocs felt in their depts and lab groups. The results were striking, forcing the dept to create dept-funded support groups.

    Seeing the power of people-centered analytics, going through COVID, and experiencing the renewed fire of the BLM Movement, Leah graduated with her PhD in the summer of 2020 and shifted her career aspirations from academics to one creating an immediate positive impact. Leah's helped grassroots direct democracy ballot initiatives, renovate community spaces, carry out COVID vaccine drives, and expand transportation access for senior neighbors.

    After a very intentional job search, Leah works at Sangfroid Strategy as a Lead Consultant in data-driven strategy for social impact, non-profit clients in Cleveland.     Prior to joining AT&T, Noemi was a Data Science Fellow at Insight Data Science NYC and a postdoctoral research associate at Social Cognitive Networks Academic Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She holds a Ph.D. in Physics, an MS in Computational Physics, and has a research background in Network Science and Computer Science.

    Naomi is a Data Scientist at Online Dialogue, a small online experimentation consultancy firm, where she designs new data science products in an interdisciplinary team of psychologists, designers, and developers.     Tanya Zyabkina is a Principal at her analytics consulting practice, Probabilistically, where her goal is to help companies make better decisions based on data.

    Tanya’s expertise comes from leading the analytics function for Fortune 500 companies in the retail and telecom industries. Her experience spans from qualitative market research in the fashion industry to building an enterprise data warehouse for an online publishing company.

    She received her MBA in Marketing from the Ohio State University and her most recent formal education was a Graduate Certificate in Data Science from Harvard University Extension School.

    A transplant from Siberia to the Midwest, Tanya resides in Columbus, Ohio with her family, and she finds Ohio winters a bit too warm for her taste.

  • Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf joins us to discuss the development of computational ecology, the latest in the field of conservation AI, and the new field of study that she has established, known as Imageomics.

    About Dr. Berger-Wolf

    Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf is a Professor of CS Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology at The Ohio State University, where she is also Director of the Translational Data Analytics Institute. She was awarded a US National Science Foundation $15M grant to establish a new Harnessing Data Revolution Institute, founding a new field of study: Imageomics.

    As a computational ecologist, her research is at the unique intersection of computer science, wildlife biology, and social sciences. She creates computational solutions to address questions such as how environmental factors affect the behavior of social animals (humans included).

    She a director/co-founder of the conservation software non-profit Wild Me, home of the Wildbook project, which was recently chosen by UNSECO as one of the top AI 100 projects worldwide supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It's been featured in media including Forbes, The NYTimes, CNN, NatGeographic, and The Economist.

    Prior to coming to OSU in January 2020, Berger-Wolf was at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Berger-Wolf holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has received numerous awards for her research and mentoring, including University of Illinois Scholar, UIC Distinguished Researcher of the Year, US National Science Foundation CAREER, Association for Women in Science Chicago Innovator, and the UIC Mentor of the Year.

Previously, she was the CEO of Concord Systems (concord.io), a NYC-based data infrastructure startup acquired by Akamai Technologies in 2016. She led building Akamai’s new IoT data platform for real-time messaging, log processing, and edge computing. Shinji studied Software Engineering at University of Waterloo and General Management at Stanford GSB. She advises early stage startups on product strategy, customer development, and company building.
