Austin has been a conservation warden in Southern Wisconsin since 2018, and has seen a lot of different things in his career. The guys dive into what the conservation warden hiring process looks like, what Austin did to become a warden, what all conservation wardens are responsible for and how that might differ depending on where you are in Wisconsin, some of the most common violations he sees, highs and lows of the job, the impacts of technology he's seeing on the outdoor space, and how being a conservation warden is a great intersection of law enforcement and protecting our natural resources. Most importantly, he shares that the hiring process for becoming a conservation warden opens on April 10th for 2025. Paul Schecklman is the Policy Chair on the Wisconsin BHA board, and in this episode he dives into how policy changes are made in the Badger State. Expect to learn how the Natural Resources Board affects changes in Wisconsin, different funding mechanisms for wildlife management in our state, and topics and projects that the BHA is focusing on including proposing a Sandhill Crane hunt, urban hunting opportunities, improving access to public lands, a recent proposal for license fee increases, and the importance of public input.

Nathan is a Wisconsin-native and current DNR Fisheries Biologist for Oneida County. In this conversation, the guys dive into what makes the fishing up north so good from a biological perspective. Nathan shares how the DNR uses a three-legged approach to ecosystem management in order to serve the needs of all stakeholders of the waterways, what a year of fish sampling looks like for a fisheries biologist, the various types of data collected to monitor the growth rates and health of various fish species, what species go underappreciated in some of the most popular areas, the impacts of panfish bag limits, and all of the resources that the DNR puts out to share their findings with the public.
