What is WTWTWS?A podcast from a natural wine enthusiast and student who has worked as an assistant sommelier, consultant, bartender, waiter, and manager. Some episodes will feature interviews with importers, retailers, sommeliers, wine makers, and other enthusiasts, some will just be me talking about a particular subject like a wine/winemaker/style/region/or even an essay on philosophy of natural or low intervention wine. The podcast is meant for both beginners AND people already into the wine scene... it is intended to demystify and make natural wine more appealing and easy to understand. Glug glug!!!Podcast Intro for episode:Today I think back to when it was freezing and dark and cold in early early February. Luckily, I had a little bit of warmth in my day by talking with my friend Sarka Betke. Like a cup of hot chocolate, Sarka is sweet and gives you the feeling of warmth inside. Sarka comes from my favorite region in the Czech Republic and she has taught me plenty about the wine from where she is from along with exposing me to a number of wonderful wines. Her company Vinofactum was originally intended only to be b2b, but due to the pandemic, she had to make some changes, which I think have greatly benefited the end consumer by having to open an online shop & deal directly with the public. Sarka invited me to the tasting that gave rise to the essay we adapted in the last episode, and has offered to help me find people to work with/for once the pandemic is over in her home country. A true mensch. You'll love this episode!
apologies for the sound quality. the file seemed to be corrupted as the mics were fine and the noise did not exist while recording. digital distortion wasnt removable with noise filters.

We go through a little background on Czech wine and Dobra Vinice (one of my favorites) in preparation for the interview with Sarka Betke of vinofactum in episode 3 (coming soon!) and there is a Q+A from patrons about the episode before it even came out!

Glug glug!!!Podcast Intro for episode:Today ill be talking to a very good friend of mine, someone who I am very lucky to have in my life & who probably has more responsibility for this podcast happening than anyone other than myself. You see, Jan Hugel is something of an accidental mentor to me when it comes to low intervention wine. Wine in general even. Jan & I have known each other for quite a long time & he took an interest in my love of wine quite early on because (little did I know) he was on his way to becoming pretty much synonymous with natural wine in Berlin. Jan very often questioned why I liked what I did, what I liked about it, & whether or not he could get me to try & appreciate things that I was staunchly opposed to. & he never did this in a way that was any less than respectful of my opinions even when they were (I know realize) pretty damn stupid. Jan was priming the engine the whole time, getting me ready for that moment when I tried the wine (or wines) that would completely change the way I thought about them & introduce to me the whole vast new world that I now try very hard to bring to others. Someday, though we have very different things that we look for in wine & very different kinds of wine we would like to make ourselves, I hope to run/work a vineyard together with this guy. Without further ado, Jan Hugel...
