On the night of November 17, 2019, 26-year-old Marshal Iwaasa left his mother's house in Lethbridge, Alberta to make the 2 hour drive back to his home in Calgary. 6 days later, his truck was mysteriously found on a remote logging road almost 1200 km away in British Columbia. On the night of June 4th 2020, police were called to the home of 26-year-old Chantel Moore to do a wellness check. But what should have been an encounter to ensure her safety and well-being, ended in the murder and death of the very person the RCMP were called to protect, adding more scrutiny to be raised against police brutality and the systemic racism towards Indigenous people. This is the case of Chantel Moore.
Canada has a very important day coming up on September 30th: Truth and Reconciliation Day. This was made a federal holiday on June 3, 2021 after the horrifying discovery of 215 unmarked child graves at the Kamloops Indian Residential School. In just 4 months, 1836 total unmarked graves have been found. And combined with the 3,213 children who died according to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, that makes the total over 5,000.

In 1987, Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg were young and in love. In the summer of 2019, a nation-wide manhunt broke out in Western Canada, searching for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky, two teenage boys who were on a killing spree. This week's case is a stark reminder of the ongoing epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada AND the United States. It’s a race, identity and gender based genocide that cannot be ignored. A recent inquiry found that Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or to go missing than members of any other demographic group in Canada. With our podcast, we try to shed a light on these cases because they don't receive nearly enough media coverage and are extremely underrepresented and underacknowledged.
