  • What do you do when you feel you are treated unjustly? Do you suck it up? Do you complain? Or, do you do something to fix the problem?I prefer the latter because proactiveness is a characteristic of strong leaders.I have always appreciated people who take the initiative to solve problems. That is why I was delighted to have Justin Ayars as a guest on “When Leaders Talk.”Justin is a serial entrepreneur, CEO, and founder of EqualityMD. His company is on a mission to address discrimination in healthcare for members of the LGTBQ+ community (yes, there is discrimination. It’s absurd, right?).Justin and I explore his perspective on leadership, and taking advantage of Justin’s experience in the startup ecosystem, we also talk about the importance of getting ready, starting with building self-awareness, to increase the chances of success.Of course, we talk about the LGBTQ+ community and how he has struggled to keep his sexual orientation hidden in some workplaces.Justin is a fantastic human being who takes the initiative to make the lives of many better and easier. • Life-work balance does not exist.Ask @Virgil Virga, President and CO-founder of Metronome LLC. Virgil's unwavering commitment to physical and mental wellness, both for himself and those he works with, is truly inspiring. It's this dedication that underpins his surprising stance on the non-existence of a life-work balance. I don’t want to spoil anything, but Virgil and I had a great conversation on the podcast “When Leaders Talk.” Not just the pursuit of harmony in life but also the importance of self-awareness (and we’ll soon discover if Virgi, from time to time, falls into the trap of micromanagement…).The episode begins and ends with a powerful reminder of the importance of authenticity, both with ourselves and our teams. Indeed, authenticity underpins genuine connections, and throughout the conversation, Virgil has been open and honest, telling stories about the turns and twists in his leadership journey with the company he founded. We also talk about the meaning of being a startup founder today and Virgil's suggestion to whoever asks him what is needed to succeed. In other words, this is another excellent episode full of insights for new and seasoned leaders. ---www.masteryoursea.comWelcome aboard 'When Leaders Talk,' where leadership isn't just a topic. • Imagine a leader: charismatic, confident, seemingly brilliant. They inspire you, motivate you, and propel you forward. But beneath the surface lurks a darkness, a manipulative streak that leaves a trail of devastation in its wake.

This isn't just a scene from a thriller; it's a chilling reality that many have faced in the workplace.

This reality is the focus of the latest episode of "When Leaders Talk." My interlocutor is Stefano Di Lollo, a seasoned leadership expert and coach with a wealth of experience navigating the intricacies of human behavior. We delve into the complex and often hidden world of the "dark triad" - narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy - a trio of personality traits associated with manipulative and even toxic leadership styles.

We try to answer a few questions:

Does the Dark Triad have any potential benefit?

Are they really the “bad guys”?

What happens to someone working in a company where this kind of leadership is ingrained in the culture?

What tools can a person use to mitigate the adverse effects of a leader with Dark Triad traits?

Can this type of leader see their impact on the people around them?

Prepare to be surprised, challenged, and inspired as we navigate the light and dark shades of leadership.

Tune in now and embark on a journey to discover how understanding and addressing the darker aspects of leadership can lead to more authentic, effective, and compassionate leadership practices.

  • If you wonder what’s in the brain of a narcissistic leader, this is for you.Jennifer Fraser, the guest in this “When Leaders Talk” episode, is an award-winning educator and best-selling author known for her work on bullying and its impact on brain health. Her latest book, "The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health," delves into the neuroscience of bullying, focusing on how it affects the brain and ways to heal from its impact. She is the perfect interlocutor to explore the maze of a narcissistic brain and to understand what makes us vulnerable to this kind of leader.Through the lens of our experiences and scientific studies and tests, we analyze the critical importance of empowering leadership, contrasting it with the detrimental effects of narcissistic leadership. One of the most revealing discoveries I have made while talking to Jennifer is about the paradox of empathy and power in leadership. Although empathy is innate, for some leaders, it is inversely proportional to their power. The episode doesn't shy away from challenging topics like the rehabilitation of narcissistic individuals, exploring the complexities and potential strategies for effecting change. • To learn the best recipe for success, talk to someone with deep knowledge of both recipes and success! If you are lucky, you could talk to someone like Dan Simons, founder and co-owner of the Farmers Restaurant Group. If you have been to Washington, DC, and its surroundings, you have probably eaten in one of his seven restaurants. His people-oriented approach led me to invite him to the podcast. For instance, I tested Dan’s knowledge of his employees: I described one of the personnel working with him, and he told me this person's name in the blink of an eye (the company is 1400 strong!)His insights on the essence of leadership are rooted in continuous learning and the power to inspire others toward excellence. One of the many things that captivated me was how Dan illuminated the proactive steps Founding Farmers took to foster employee well-being, starting with mental health. He emphasized that these are benefits and essential investments in their people. We had the opportunity to explore Dan’s journey in leadership through failures, challenges, and triumphs. He speaks about the importance of self-improvement, acknowledging his struggles and the principles that guide his leadership style. As always, there is much more, from the importance of quality in time management to the hope – that we both share -in the new generations to the significance of relationships and partnerships.Dan is an amazing human being and an inspiring leader. • Not for the faint-hearted.I invite you to go beyond the classic conversations about toxic leadership.

You can explore the real meaning of being the victim of an abusive boss.

What are the effects of aggressive or bullying behaviors in the workplace?

I have asked this question to Vicki Courtemanche, who bravely shares her personal odyssey, a journey marked by psychological warfare in a place where she spent over two decades nurturing her career. Vicki is the guest in the latest episode of my podcast, "When Leaders Talk."

With her, we explore the devastating effects of a toxic leader, potentially leading to extreme outcomes such as involuntary leaving, termination, and even suicide.Imagine dedicating years to your profession, only to find yourself entrapped in an abusive environment where psychological aggression becomes your daily ordeal. We are talking about systematic erosion of dignity, health, and well-being.Vicki's experience sheds light on a phenomenon far too common yet often shrouded in silence. But there's more: the episode is a testimony to the power of recovery, the strength of advocacy, and the following healing. Vicki's journey from victim to victor, from enduring psychological abuse to spearheading legislative change, is inspirational. She reminds us that recovery is possible with the right tools, support, and inner resilience and can lead to a newfound purpose.Join Vicki and me in the exploration of the dark side of leadership.----www.masteryoursea.comWelcome aboard 'When Leaders Talk,' where leadership isn't just a topic. • 1 out of 4 workers experience toxic leadership. This staggering statistic from the 2023 Work in America Survey highlights a critical issue in today's workplaces.

I had gone through negative experiences, too, having to deal with toxic leaders more than once. (link to the statistics here).
