Welcome back to the What’s Possible podcast.
I've got a fantastic interview with someone that I met as a Guidance client earlier in the year. His name is Jonathan Chapman and he is a senior teacher at Kardinia International College in Geelong. When we were working together he mentioned that he travelled to Timor and did some volunteer work there. We spoke a little bit about it, but of course, the primary purpose was to get together and talk financial planning. So we couldn't dive into things in much detail. But I always kind of had it filed away in the back of my mind that I hope I get a chance to have a chat with Jonathan one day and find out a whole bunch more about it. And so this podcast was the perfect opportunity to scratch that itch, I suppose.
In this discussion, Jonathan explains the history of East Timor, and I must admit, I was certainly ignorant of the vast majority of it. It was an eye -opener for me, and I suspect many people listening will be in the same boat. He provided a really interesting snapshot as to what life is like today in East Timor as well as the impact that volunteering has had on him. He's been volunteering over there for 10 years through a program with his school. He's also made personal trips to help out beyond the school program. He's retiring next year, but he intends to continue to contribute to the community that he's built a relationship with.
In our interview Jonathan also shares what his students have been able to take from the school's efforts.
A great discussion here and certainly it motivated me to look for opportunities where I can make a contribution as well. Perhaps some of you listening might feel the same way too.

Welcome to the What's Possible podcast our dive into the people who inspire us, how they achieved what they did, and what lessons we can all draw so that we can live the most interesting and full lives possible.
My name's Paul Benson, financial planner at Guidance Financial services, and I’m joined by my colleague at Guidance, Crawford Ross.
We’re both money guys. We help people build and protect their wealth and ensure they have long-term financial security. But the point of money is not to die as the richest person in the cemetery. Money is an enabler. Money gives you choices in life. There’s plenty of podcasts that tell you about contribution caps and imputation credits. They answer the “How”. But here at What’s Possible, we want to explore the “what” and the “why”. Without these pieces of the puzzle, the “how” isn’t of much value.
This week we’re taking a look at Sir Edmund Hillary. Yes, he’s a Kiwi, but his impressiveness sufficiently outweighs that slight negative.
I read a biography on Hillary at least a decade ago and found him to be an inspiring and super interesting guy.
He's most famous of course for climbing Mount Everest, but there's a lot more that he did besides that. He suffered his fair share of tragedy too.
This being the first episode of What's Possible, I’d better share with you the plan of attack:
I'm going to run you through a bit of a history on Hillary, his achievements, his failings, and various other bits and pieces that I've discovered in my research.
Once that groundwork is laid out, Crawford and I are going to run through a series of questions that we will repeat in each episode, to consider what lessons we can take, and how they made it possible.
Whilst this week the person we're featuring is no longer with us, and has international fame, neither of those features will always be the case. In future episodes we intend to look at a broad spectrum of people in areas such as humanitarian volunteering, travel, entrepreneurship, career changers, digital nomads, creators, and plenty more.
Sometimes we might interview them to get their story direct from the horses mouth.
Hope you enjoy!
