Rachael Needham went through divorce a few years ago, however most of the trauma she experienced was in her toxic marriage. As a Christian woman, she wrestled with the thought of divorce and all that was subtly implied at the thought of divorce. Even though her parents, who were were both pastors, supported whatever decision she made, it was quite a few years before she eventually got ‘unmarried’ because of her religious surroundings.
Rachael has written a book to help others figure out if divorce is a healthy choice for them. That in itself was a whole other level of daring, as she was so afraid to be open about such a topic, when many branches of Christianity have views on divorce that say one thing: you stay married at all costs. Rachel does not agree with this message at all, and even finds it to be unbiblical, yet trapping so many, especially women, in unhealthy marriages.
This is such a great, honest, and eye opening episode. Thank you Rachael!

TRIGGER WARNING: Discussions or multiple forms of abuse.
Lynn Stroud was brought up in a house filled with anger and tension, with a father who was a compulsive gambler. On top of that, her father and one of her brothers became overly protective towards her, and would dicate where she was allowed to go, what she could wear and who she could see. The experience that Lynn endured as a teenager would continue into her relationships with men, and her story focuses on one terrifying relationship in her twenties, which plays out like a horror movie. Lynn suffered narcissistic abuse, coercive control, extreme jealousy, manipulation, aggression, stalking, sexual abuse and eventually reproductive coercion, which Lynn explains in this extraordinary episode. As with all our episodes, we focus on the positive outcome and the journey through these life changing experiences. Lynn now shares her story so that others can learn the signs of coercive control. The U.S. is severely lacking in laws against coercive control. Lynn is trying to expand the conversations around coercive control to include the insidious act of reproductive coercion.

Maria Riegger is a banking/corporate attorney by day, and a fiction author by night. Maria’s head has always been in the clouds. From a young age, her mother scolded her for not paying attention; when she was bored, she would make up stories in her head. She has been writing since she was about thirteen years old. Maria’s story starts in her childhood, with abuse and narcasism at the hands of her mother. We follow her journey away from the grasp of her mother, and discuss her struggles to find emotional freedom. Children that have been indoctrinated with negative thinking, scolding, and emotional abuse, often have a very hard time believing in themselves in later life. Childhood PTSD is very, very real. People pleasing is common, and often finding yourself in one sided relationships, a lack of confident decison making, unhealthy bounderies, and even wading into another abusive relationship without knowing you are doing it! This is an amazing episode for everyone who has ever struggled with low self esteem, and in fact for anyone who has ever had to deal with other human beings!

Gerard Grogans has a very powerful message to share, and one we should all listen to in this really fascinating episode! A passing comment from his mother when he was young, about how he 'looked tired' completely changed the course of Gerard's life! The comment had a deeper meaning to Gerard and he would spend his life saving up for eye surgery to 'fix' the dark circles around his eyes. Of course his Mother had meant nothing from the comment, but it became all Gerard could think about. Eventually, a botched surgery took Gerard to the depths of darkness and questioning everything. But in the darkness, Gerard found strength, and purpose, and began to shed his fears and embrace his belief and love for himself. It's very inspiring!!
Gerard now teaches how the Pygmalion Effect leads to the conscious and unconscious decision we make in our lives and how that imprinting affects everything we do.

One day in her car, Alyssa Decker was scanning the radio stations for something to listen to. She came across a woman who was telling the story of her marriage, and she was immediately captivated. The woman on the radio was describing Alyssa's marriage, almost exactly. For some reason, it had not occurred to her that there might be other marriages like hers. As the woman was talking, Alyssa was driving down the road with tears streaming down her face. She felt so seen, like the woman on the radio somehow knew her situation. And then the voice on the radio said the words that would set Alyssa's world spinning on its axis, never to recover. “I realized I was in an abusive marriage, and that I couldn’t stay.” Alyssa immediately thought 'NO. I’m not in an abusive marriage! My marriage is just hard. One day we’ll figure it out, and it will get better’. The trouble was, she knew that truth, and it felt like a punch to the gut that stole her breath away. Now that she knew, she couldn’t go back. Finally, she faced reality with the help of a support group. She started learning how to create a different conversation in her mind, which led to calmer reactions, which led to a happier life and freedom!

It’s harrowing at times, and no one should have to go through what Bambi has been through. Although tough to hear, this is a story of triumph over trauma, a raw and gritty tale that plays out like a bleak and hard to watch movie. The ending however, is one of light, from the darkness. It took Bambi thirty-two years to except her name that she was given, but now she says her name with pride. Ever since her 7th grade teacher told her she had a gift to write, she has never stopped.
