Season 18: Partners in the Gospel

    SCRIPTURE: Philippians 1:1-5

SHOW NOTES: We invite you to subscribe to our ministry website – Discover God's Truth – where you will find resources to encourage you in your Walk with God.

The book of Philippians is Paul’s thank-you letter to the church at Philippi. He has great affection for the people who have partnered with him in the Lord’s ministry, and this is another opportunity for Paul to encourage the believers. He greets them with these words, “May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.” (Philippians 1:2)

A small city, Philippi was a Roman colony. Paul and his mission team were specifically called from Asia Minor (current day Turkey) to Macedonia. They immediately departed and, a few days later, arrived in Philippi.

A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them … setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. (Acts 16:9-12)

Paul met Lydia, the seller of purple, and a group of women praying by the river. After hearing the Gospel message, she and her house believed and were baptized. Following a conflict in the marketplace, Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison. God sent an earthquake that night, and the doors were opened, and their chains unfastened. Everyone in the prison that night saw God’s mighty power.

You have been my partners in spreading the Gospel from the day you first heard it until now. Philippians 1:5

  • SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 31

SHOW NOTES: You are invited to subscribe to our ministry website – Discover God's Truth.

The Book of Proverbs teaches moral and ethical principles which will lead to a wise life. The word “wisdom” (hokmāh) occurs 48 times in this book. The words “wisdom and instruction” (1:2a) complement each other because “wisdom” includes the idea of “skill” in living. The word for “instruction means “discipline.” No “skill” in living can be developed or perfected without “discipline.”

The final chapter in Proverbs offers sound words of advice – a mother to her son, the king. And, the closing verses share a beautiful portrait of a godly and wise woman.

"She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise. She guards her tongue, and she gives instructions with kindness." Proverbs 31:25-26

These words of instruction are valuable for both men and women to practice daily. Choose words carefully. Guard our tongues and speak with kindness. The Lord is our strength, and He will direct our steps.

  • SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 29-30

SHOW NOTES: We invite you to subscribe to our ministry website – Discover God's Truth.

The Book of Proverbs is filled with wise sayings and uses repetition as a teaching tool. In chapter 29, the conjunction "but" connects ideas that contrast each other.

"When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, BUT when a wicked man rules, people groan." Proverbs 29:2

As we work through these verses, pay attention to the contrasts between the righteous and the wicked. When we have righteous hearts and walk with God, we will show care and concern for others.

We can learn more about the Lord daily by studying His Word, praying, and meditating on Scripture verses. In chapter 30, the author admits that he has not acquired wisdom and does not know God well. He recognizes God’s word is true and pure.

"Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him." Proverbs 30:5

"Consider the small creatures of this world, for they are remarkably wise: ants, rock badgers, locusts, and lizards." (Proverbs 30:24-28). These simple beings offer valuable lessons to each of us.

The Book of Proverbs provides wise counsel and instruction for righteous living. Chapters 27 and 28 include many wise sayings for us to “chew on,” ponder, and meditate on. The depth of insight and knowledge in these two chapters provides guidance and direction for each of us.

"Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17

It is our sincere desire to be righteous people. We cannot live righteously without the help of the Holy Spirit and Your strength and guidance. Fill us with Your wisdom and direct us according to Your perfect wisdom and purpose for our lives.

"Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand all things." Proverbs 28:5

The heart reflects the true nature of a person. By examining our heart attitudes, we gain genuine self-awareness. Seek the Lord, and He will guide and direct your steps.

  • SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 25-26

SHOW NOTES: We invite you to visit our ministry website, Discover God's Truth, where you will find resources to encourage you in your walk with God.

The book of Proverbs provides insight and guidance for relationships, including how to interact with kings, neighbors, enemies, fools, and sluggards.

"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear." Proverbs 25:11-12

Our words can encourage and bless others, so it's essential to choose them carefully. We should avoid boasting about things we won't follow through on, and when we need to correct or admonish someone, it's vital to do so kindly. Our words have the potential to be as precious as gold apples and beautiful ornaments, providing support and comfort to the souls of those around us.

A fool is a person who acts unwisely and lacks judgment or sense. Be cautious when using the word or referring to someone as a "fool." Do not argue with a fool but rather refute the fool.

"Like snow in summer or rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool." Proverbs 26:1

Who do we honor? Those who are worthy of recognition. Fools do not deserve to be honored. They consistently make poor choices and bad decisions—over and over—and do not learn from mistakes.

The chapters in the book of Proverbs give us positive and negative examples. The Lord provides wise words of instruction because He wants to lead us on the path of righteousness. His Word presents guidelines for the right way we should live.

"Man’s steps are ordained by the Lord, how then can man understand his way?" Proverbs 20:24

We have choices to make each day. How will we act? What will we say? Where will we spend time? Who will we do business with? Consider your path and the choices you make. We pray each of us will yield our thoughts, actions, and words to the will and purpose of our Heavenly Father.

Today’s lesson will highlight examples of the contrast between the Upright and the Wicked. This gives us instruction and guidance for how we choose to live.

"The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous runs into it and is safe." Proverbs 18:10

Is it possible that Solomon learned this Truth from his father? David penned these words in Psalm 61:3 –

“For You have been a refuge for me, a tower of strength against the enemy.”

Proverbs 19 directs our attention to conduct and how we live life. In verse 1, the author tells us a poor man should walk with integrity and live in an upright, godly manner.

The definition of Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles

"He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will find good. A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who tells lies will perish." Proverbs 19:8-9

The book of Proverbs offers instruction, words of warning, and wisdom principles for readers. The wise person will bring their plans and works to the Lord, seeking His guidance and direction.

"Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; assuredly, he will not be unpunished. By lovingkindness and truth, iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the Lord, one keeps away from evil." Proverbs 16:5-6

Chapters 16 and 17 reveal the sharp contrast between the righteous and the wicked. The phrases point to the mouth, actions, and heart attitudes. Which path are you walking on? Do you seek to gain wisdom and understanding? Or are you following the foolish path of pride and power?

"He who gives attention to the word will find good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord." Proverbs 16:20

"He whose ear listens to the life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.

He who neglects discipline despises himself, but he who listens to reproof acquires understanding.

The fear of the Lord is the instruction for wisdom, and before honor comes humility."

SHOW NOTES: We invite you to join us each week. Please subscribe to our ministry website – Discover God's Truth.

The book of Proverbs is filled with King Solomon’s words of wisdom. The word righteous is found 90 times in this book. Chapter 10 presents the sharp contrast between a righteous person and a wicked or foolish person.

Read chapter 10 and notice these words – lips, mouth, and tongue. Solomon warns his readers to guard their tongues (see James 3:5-8). He offers this encouraging statement, “the tongue of the righteous is as choice silver” (Proverbs 10:20).

As this chapter closes, we read several hopeful affirmations.

    ·      The fear of the Lord prolongs life (v. 27)

    ·      The hope of the righteous is gladness (v. 28)

    ·      The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the upright. (v. 29)

    ·      The righteous will never be shaken (v. 30)

    ·      The mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom (v. 31)

    ·      The lips of the righteous bring forth what is acceptable (v. 32)

  • SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 9

SHOW NOTES: We invite you to subscribe to our new ministry website – Discover God's Truth.

The author of Proverbs uses the literary tool of personification to add understanding and depth to godly wisdom. Lady Wisdom builds her house, prepares a banquet, and sends her maidens out to invite everyone to come.

Wisdom offers good teaching, sound counsel, insight, and discernment for all who enter her house. Sit with her, and you will be refreshed and satisfied.

Leave your simple ways, listen to her instruction, and learn from Wisdom. You will live. You will walk in the way of insight.

Beware of the woman Folly. She mimics Wisdom, and she hopes to lead you astray. She offers stolen water and immoral bread. Ultimately, Folly offers death.

God’s Word is a Treasure Trove! He invites us to dig into His Written Word and discover the wisdom He has placed there for each of us.

Listen as Wisdom calls out! Hear as understanding raises her voice! On the hilltop along the road, she stands at the crossroads. By the gates at the entrance to the town, on the road leading in, she cries aloud, “I call to you, to all of you! I raise my voice to all people.”

    Proverbs 8:1-4

Wisdom came forth before the earth began. Wisdom was born before the oceans, mountains, heavens, and clouds. Everything that God did in creation was wise and thoughtful.

Listen to Wisdom, follow her ways, and you will be joyful.

In the opening verses of Proverbs 7, the author addresses “My son” and exhorts each of us to "treasure my commandments. Keep my commandments and live!”

Keep the Word of God close to your fingertips. Wisdom is precious and is to be guarded and held in high regard.

Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your intimate friend.

    Proverbs 7:4

Proverbs 7:15-21 calls attention to the current trend in pornography. Not only are more men being drawn into this addictive trap but increasingly, the percentage of women struggling with pornography is growing.

The way of the righteous is wisdom and the bright light of dawn. The way of the wicked is foolishness and total darkness. A wise father provides practical warnings for the son who will listen and heed the wisdom spoken.

The author of Proverbs points to the ant and says, “Take some time and think about this. The ant works hard even though no prince or governor tells her what to do. She gathers food in the summer and prepares for the winter.”

Good friend, follow your father’s good advice; don’t wander off from your mother’s teachings. -Proverbs 6:20 (The Message)

  • SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 4 & 5

SHOW NOTES: We invite you to subscribe to our new ministry website – Discover God's Truth.

The first step in acquiring wisdom is to make up your mind that you want it and will strive to obtain it (quote from Dr. Charles Ryrie). In other words, roll up your sleeves and put forth the effort to obtain it. Why? Because wisdom is valuable! It’s worth more than silver or gold. Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do!

The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; and with all your acquiring, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7

One principle that helps in the study of Wisdom Literature is to examine the verbs that drive the commandments. Chapter 4 is an excellent example of this study tool with both positive and negative admonitions. Follow along as we walk through these verses in today’s lesson.

"And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore." – 1 Kings 4:29

True godly wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord and will result in a holy life. Throughout the Proverbs, we read words of wisdom and caution from a father to his son. We are encouraged to listen carefully and lean into the wise instructions given to us.

This involves a choice. We must decide with our hearts. If we choose to walk the path of wisdom, we will follow God’s instruction and discover understanding and good judgment. The one who finds wisdom is blessed. It is better than silver or fine gold, more precious than jewels. Nothing can compare to wisdom.
