  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“Giving can be a small amount and it still makes a difference.”

    __________

If you’ve been listening to me for a while, you may recall that I attending the inaugural SXSW Sydney event in 2023 and amoung some of the most incredible talks and panels I attended, I came across today’s guest. Theresa Winters organised the panel and session with the topic being microgrants. Alternative forms of fund raising have always intrigued me and I’ve been involved in micro-financing and giving circles previously so I was eager to learn more.

Theresa is an international-award-winning community builder. Her full-time role is as the Alumni Programs Coordinator at the University of Technology Sydney (Australia's #1 young university), where she creates global connections between alumni, organisations, and students. She was the winner of the international Community Manager Award from the Global Workspace Association.

She is the co-founder and editor of The Plus Ones, a media company that focuses on telling people about the best events and experiences across Melbourne and Sydney. If that wasn’t already enough, Theresa is also the Dean of the Sydney chapter of The Awesome Foundation, and recently served as a Board member of the Surry Hills Business Partnership. She also acts as the Sydney lead for the Fomo Killer Society - a private group of the best founders, operators, and community builders throughout Australasia.

Theresa’s favourite activities include running a book club (focused on prize-winning and acclaimed literature); teaching workshops about Historical Linguistics at Laneway Learning; and planning elaborate theme parties for her friends! It takes a special kind of human to do the work Theresa does, so please enjoy meeting this wonderful woman.

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“That our experience of the world is a choice. We can find equal dark and light. Equal utopia and dystopia. Equal heaven and hell. Where our focus goes gives us our reality.”

    ________

My guest today has been an architect, created and headed up a financial planning business for two decades, then became a coach and mentor of business leaders and for even more diversity thrown in, the past nine years now an acclaimed Artist.

Maurice Goldberg leverages the inherent creativity in all human beings to innovate and implement better, faster... & more beautifully. He brings clarity, self-expression and expansive thinking to engage and innovate within organisations and take people beyond what they think is possible. He has created some of the fastest-growing and most forward-thinking businesses in Australia. He has been listed three times in BRW Magazines Fast100, being one of the fastest 100 growing companies in Australia (2004, 2005 and 2007). For over 30 years he’s been the CEO of businesses in Financial Services, Real Estate, Marketing and Public Art & Design where he has been instigating revolutionary thinking.

What makes Maurice unique is his success in both Finance and The Arts which has given him mastery of both analytical left-brain and creative right-brain thinking. He also has decades of facilitating small and large groups to effectively, deep dive into clarity and accelerated engagement and increased ideation. This gives his clients momentum and insights that most organisations struggle to gain.

He has always been creative and often rocks the boat in his pursuit of better ways of doing business. His diverse career has led him to be part visionary, part rebel and part designer and like a great architect asks deeper questions that facilitate evolutionary pathways to success. He says challenges in business and life are design puzzles waiting to be solved by asking the right questions.

Evolving smarter happens by creatively unlocking the all too often hidden ideas, potential and passion, locked inside our organisations He is known for his razor-sharp intuitive insights and his uncanny ability to simplify what seems complex. Clients describe his facilitations as insightful, fun, unexpected and mind-blowing and a game changer.

In the past decade, he has also been making an extraordinary body of public art exhibited in public spaces, festivals and museums from Sydney to London and the Pilbara to New York. He is best known for his beautiful use of pattern, space, scale and colour and ease in facilitating collaborations with artists, organisations and communities. If that bio doesn’t intrigue you on meeting Maurice, I don’t know what will - let’s dive in!

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“I’d like to talk about Sex toys, vibrators, and how we need to normalise female pleasure and the interesting topic of what it's like building a business in such a taboo space.”

    ______

I was going to start by saying that today’s episode is one for the gals.. But honestly - male partners could do with learning about this topic as well! We are going to give you some ideas for great gift-giving in future, I’m sure! Our topic today is certainly not like any other I’ve ever had on the pod in the past 5 years. You will likely learn a few new things but most definitely giggle along with us as we chat with this remarkable businesswoman. I met today’s guest, Viv at a dinner recently and then saw her speak at a conference. She’s a powerhouse - but could also easily become a stand-up comedian - she has me in hysterics.

You see, Viv Conway is the Co-Founder of the 7-figure women’s sexual wellness brand, Girls Get Off. No stranger to the world of business, Viv previously built and sold an activewear brand and a social media agency. Girls Get Off is on a mission to empower women in all things pleasurable, removing the stigma or taboo that comes with talking about (and making the most of!) getting off. Viv believes that shame needs to be taken out of female masturbation and that there’s no greater awakening than getting to know yourself inside and out. (in the words of TayTay) Are you ready for it? Let’s strap on.. I mean strap in, as we learn more about this juicy topic with the ever-entertaining Viv Conway!

“Why social enterprise is the way of the future! It doesn’t have to be profit OR purpose, you can (and should) have both!”

    ____________

I meet a lot of people in the work I do and every now and then, I come across someone who I instantly want to learn more about. My guest today is one of those people. She has a quiet disposition and yet is fiercely passionate about the work she does - which happens to be impacting some of our most vulnerable members of society. She’s so fascinating, has built an incredible business and I was eager to sit down with her.

Her name is Jane Marx and she’s an experienced social entrepreneur and business innovator. She is passionate about creating meaningful employment opportunities for marginalised women to grow the skills, self-confidence, and financial independence they need to fulfil their dreams. Jane is the Founder and CEO of social enterprise, The Beautiful Bunch, and is an advocate for using the power of business to create a more inclusive and sustainable economy. Most recently, Jane has been working on a first-of-its-kind rose-growing operation, Rooftop Roses, and is on a mission to disrupt the floriculture industry, growing local roses that are good for people and the planet. • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“The isolation and lack of resources for rural women and mothers”

    _____

Today we meet an extraordinary human. Rebecca Gilchrist is a mother of two, farmer and Clinical Psychologist living and breathing rural life on a 6th generation mixed grazing property in NSW. The rolling granite hills of the New England tablelands are a long way from her childhood as an expatriate, the daughter of a telco executive, raised travelling and living abroad in China, India and Türkiye.

When Rebecca found herself birthing her daughter on an ambulance plane at 33 weeks, a stint in NICU and navigating a second high-risk pregnancy in the bush she was confronted with the deafening echo of challenges experienced by many women in accessing maternity care and support for birth trauma recovery in the bush. Rebecca is passionate about sharing her story and bringing mental health services to rural women throughout all of Australia - not just those in the cities. Let’s meet Rebecca and hear more of her story.

  • THE ‘WHY’ BEHIND BUSINESS with Aaron Smith

If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“I believe business is the number one way people can do good / impact positive change in society today. The one question I wish society would talk more about is the WHY behind why people start businesses. With Tall Poppy Syndrome rampant in this country, I feel the assumption is for profit, but I would say 9/10 times an entrepreneur has a stronger purpose behind their WHY, and profit is a secondary outcome.”

    _____________

Founder of KX Pilates, Aaron Smith is an award-winning fitness innovator, entrepreneur and author of DEFINE YOURSELF: When Passion, Purpose and Business Collide. Based on the Japanese philosophy of kaizen (continuous improvement), KX Pilates is a dynamic workout that has transformed both fitness participants and the business at large. Smith founded KX Pilates in February 2010 and has since built it into Australia's largest pilates franchise with over 110+ studios across Australia, Indonesia, China, Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand.

Kaizen drives Smith physically and mentally and imbues everything he does, from the way he sharpens his business skills to the lessons he has applied to his life thus far. He lives and acts by the principle of creating a culture of empowerment for franchise partners so that everyone in the KX Pilates rises with the brand's success. Put simply, KX exists to change lives for the better.

As the founder of KX Pilates, Aaron has earnt multiple awards and recognition including 2021 Melbourne Young Fitness Entrepreneur, being recognised as an influential Victorian to watch by the Herald Sun in 2020, Australian Young Fitness Entrepreneur of the Year in 2019, was named in the top 3 of Australia’s Top 30 Franchise Executives (2020), and featured in the 2019 Top 10 Dynamic Entrepreneurs by Dynamic Business Magazine.

In November 2018 Aaron stepped down as CEO to focus on innovation and international expansion and I was eager to dig deeper into his story and find out what drives a guy like this who has created a very successful business network.

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“As a culture why do we feel the need to top-up our personalities with booze and not be our authentic selves socially?”

Victoria Vanstone is the host of Sober Awkward, a popular comedy podcast that tracks two former party animals as they navigate life without booze. Victoria started writing on the day she gave up alcohol and became a renowned over-sharer on her blog drunkmummysobermummy.com. The reformed ‘party girl’ is now on a mission to help others who are stuck in a pattern of normalised social binge drinking.

Originally from Reading in the UK, Vic now lives on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland with her brood of uncontrollable children, a rather confused dog, and a very patient husband. Victoria's first book 'A Thousand Wasted Sundays' is out now and I was super excited to meet her - I hope you love this conversation as much as I did.

You may recall me talk about an amazing retreat I’ve been to in NZ a couple of times & there I met a very special person that I wanted to introduce you to today.

Jessica Winkle is an incredibly experienced yoga teacher, Reiki practitioner, and retreat leader, based at the prestigious Aro Ha Wellness Retreat in New Zealand. Originally from Oklahoma, USA, her yoga journey began after experiencing profound loss at the tender age of 19, compounded by numerous other losses throughout her life. Jessica's immersion in yoga led to her being honoured with the Aspiring Yoga Teaching Scholarship by Yoga Alliance in 2016.

Over the years, Jessica has delved deeply into the realm of grief, recognizing a profound societal gap in understanding and processing this universal human experience. Passionate about facilitating healing journeys, she has conducted numerous grief ritual workshops, cacao ceremonies, and more, offering solace and guidance to those navigating their own grief landscapes. The lady you’re about to meet has a unique story. Not letting speech difficulties define her as a child, she overcame early setbacks to master her craft and become an incredible keynote speaker. I came across Annelise McCarthy when she was ‘schooling’ those on social media who had trolled her for the attire she had chosen to wear on stage. Not one to conform, Annelise eloquently put them in their place and I was intrigued to find out more about this fabulously articulate woman.

My guest today is unlike anyone I’ve ever had on the show before. When he was very young, he was a criminal hacker. Now he protects companies from people just like him.

Many years ago, in the NSW coastal town of Eden, Bastien Treptel was a curious kid and had a fascination for computers and technology. He would disassemble any technology he could get his hands on, including his father’s old telescope and his mother’s washing machine. After his grandfather gave him an old Pentium 486 computer when he was 14, Bastien began reading about famous hackers around the world and they became a source of inspiration for him.

By 16, he captured national attention and the Australian Federal Police were at his door. Bastien had hacked into a major Australian bank, accessing 40,000 credit card numbers and sensitive data. It was his love of pizza that led to the police tracking him down and ultimately reforming his ways.

Years later, Bastien put his skills to good use and founded CTRL Group with the aim of combating cybercrime, and in 2021, he sold the company for a serious sum that he now doesn’t need to work. Today, he uses his time to spread the word on how dangerous and creative cyber criminals are and how you can protect your business and personal life. Bastien is dedicated to inspiring everyone to appreciate security as it becomes an essential part of our lives as we move into a hyper-digitized world.

I saw Bastien speak at SXSW last year and have been following him on Insta ever since - finding his content so helpful and insightful, if not at times, quite terrifying at how exposed we are these days - I just had to get him on the show. Let's dive in to learn more about the fascinating and sometimes scary world of cybercrime…

“We need more conversation around understanding the feelings we seek through financial attainment. When we attach emotional goals to our financial pursuits, we're more likely to create lasting habits and feel confident in our monetary decisions. By fostering this dialogue, we can cultivate a healthier relationship with money, grounded in emotional fulfilment rather than purely materialistic goals.”

“We need to take responsibility for our own health and this includes our mental health.”

    _______

Shane Kelton is a speaker and author who’s experienced mental health issues since the age of 12. His first memories are hiding under the bed with the thoughts of wanting to die, and it was the internalising of all the thoughts and feelings that nine years later led to a suicide attempt. A roller coaster ride of ups and downs was to follow, as he went about finding his way to get through the darkest of thoughts. Shane knew he didn’t want to die, but the internal dialogue and suffering all became too much. In this years that followed Shane got to work on himself, lived the ups and downs and decided after a friend died by suicide that enough was enough.

As a lived experience speaker he wanted to do more, so he wrote his book ‘I didn’t want to die, I just wanted the pain to end- finding a better way’ in an aim to help others who may be suffering or give a better understanding to those who just don’t get it. Shane’s passion is creating real conversations which don’t feel as challenging as they once were, allowing all humans to feel safer, build connections and find there own community to become healthier and happy versions of themselves.

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“So much of parenting is based on outdated and inaccurate gender stereotypes.”

    ____________

At this later stage in life, I’m starting to break down many ‘societal norms’ I’ve carried with me for most of my life. This is interesting because I was brought up with quite progressive parents who didn’t conform to the typical ‘norms’ around gender bias that many of the parents of my mates did. It’s hard to change deep-seated views around masculinity and femininity that often are formed and passed through generations before us. So I was super keen to sit down with a wonderful couple who just by encouraging their son to fully express who he is and wants to be, they’ve created a movement of allowing others to be themselves too.

Scott Stuart is a best-selling children's author whose empowering messages have been seen almost 200 million times on social media, and Melina is a former professional dancer, turned branding and partnerships specialist. After their son fell in love with Elsa 6 years ago, and was subsequently told that "only girls can like Elsa", Scott & Mel have been committed to helping break down gender stereotypes for kids, to help everyone feel accepted for exactly who they are. But as you’re about to hear - they are impacting far more than just kids.

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“It’s scary starting a business. I want to talk about how very isolating and personally confronting the experience of building your own business really is.”

    ___________

Have you ever been unemployed and afraid? I know I have. Many of you may not know but despite having a stellar executive career, I’ve been sacked once and gone through two redundancies. They were challenging times, I can tell you. But even if you make the decision to leave your job to try something new - it’s often a scary time - especially if you have big bills to pay! My guest today, not only took this plunge…but has now made a living out of talking about it.

Kim Kerton is a creative and commercially minded podcast consultant, helping brands and business owners build themselves big podcasts. She’s also the host, creator and producer of Unemployed & Afraid, a popular small business podcast for the brave self-employed, where she dives into the realities, practicalities and self-growth journey of starting a business from scratch.

Before all that, Kim was an entrepreneur, creating and closing two businesses before the age of 21, and then spent over a decade in the big brand commercial radio and content business with the likes of Nova Entertainment, Australian Radio Network, Vodafone, Ford, Tourism Tasmania, TEDx, Squarespace and more.

She’s well versed in creating award-winning and chart-topping brand environments and was a recent Rising Star finalist in the Australian Podcast Awards for her own podcast Unemployed & Afraid.

The unique combination of Kim’s experience as a podcast creator, celebrated interviewer, and small business owner, with her extensive commercial acumen in all things audio, content and media, make her a strong strategic thinker and leading voice in business growth and branded podcasting. I’ve really enjoyed listening to Kim’s podcast and wanted to get her on the show to delve deeper into the topics around the challenges of running a small business.

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

    “How to embrace ageing.”

    __________

Imagine going to the optometrist for a routine eye check and being told that you had a degenerative eye condition and you would soon be losing your sight. Completely.

Fast forward to a few months and numerous tests later, you find out the diagnosis was wrong. Aside from celebrating, what would you do, or change in your life. This was the experience of my guest today, Jane Tara and I was keen to hear more about her story.

Jane has published over a hundred children's books, several plays and five novels. Her latest book “Tilda is Visible” is a novel that is part memoir, part self-help and it’s a fascinating read.

Jane attributes a lot of her happiness in life to being a daily meditator, as well as being a sucker for a rescue mutt and, most of all, a front-row cheerleader for her two sons. Jane also spent thirteen years wandering the world and lived in five countries but is now the general manager at Australia's largest book review community, Better Reading. Let’s meet this fascinating woman.
