🌹 🎶 "Be yourself child" - singer, vocal consultant and singing teacher Michael Harper reflects on how we can free our voices and take a stand for freedom in the face of oppression.
🌹 🎶 Michael Harper is a singer, vocal consultant and singing teacher. He has sung opera, oratorio, and new music in the US, Europe and in China, premiering new works in the UK, Venice, and Geneva.
Michael was one of six vocal coaches on the recent Sky Arts series Anyone Can Sing. As a vocal consultant, he has given master classes, workshops and lectures for the Centre for Performance Research (Aberystwyth), the Asolo Song Festival and Institute for Song Interpretation (Italy), The National Foundation for Youth Music, Sing Up, The Sage Gateshead (Newcastle), Jackdaws Music Education Trust (Somerset), Guildhall School of Music and Drama, The Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), the National Opera Studio (London), the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester), various US universities including Westminster Choir College (Princeton) where he worked with the Grammy- nominate Williamson Voices, and the British Library, where he held an Edison Fellowship.
He has curated recitals for the London Song Festival and for Steinway Hall on the songs of African American and Black British Composers, and directed a tribute to the Fisk Jubilee Singers as part of the Hull City of Culture 2016.
He teaches singing at the Royal Northern School of Music in Manchester and has private studios in London, Bristol, and at the den Norske Opera in Oslo. He is trustee of the Saga Trust (Edison Fellowship, British Library) and a Patron for the National Opera Studio’s Diverse Voices programme.

🌹 🎶 Anna Sayburn Lane is a novelist, short story writer and journalist. Her mystery thriller novels explore the rich literary landscapes of London and Kent. Anna studied English and History at University, then began her career as a reporter on a South London newspaper, later moving into medical journalism. She has published three novels which weave literary history into contemporary thrillers, featuring her literary sleuth Helen Oddfellow, a walking tour guide and academic, who lives in Deptford. The first, Unlawful Things (2018), based around the death of Christopher Marlowe, was shortlisted for the Virago New Crime Writer Award and picked as a Crime in the Spotlight Choice by the Bloody Scotland Crime Writing Festival. Her second novel, The Peacock Room (2020), takes inspiration from the London poet and artist William Blake, while the third, The Crimson Thread (2021), returns to Christopher Marlowe and is set in Canterbury, the city of his birth. In a case of life imitating art, Anna has now given a guided walk for the Deptford Literature Festival about literary figures in Deptford, and recently started teaching Creative Writing workshops. 🌹 🎶 Randolph Matthews is a composer, performance artist and voice facilitator. His musical career spans over 2 decades and his expertise saunters through jazz, blues and contemporary dance. Randolph performs and creates work nationally and internationally with collaborations across interdisciplinary art forms. He has performed with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Grace Jones and graced Buckingham Palace for the Queen.
Randolph studied voice at Goldsmiths College London in 2000 combining Alexander Technique and vocal mechanics. He further explored the relationship between voice and movement by training in Voice Movement Therapy in Boston, USA with voice specialist Paul Newham. He has since run workshops in Europe and USA on voice and movement helping people connect with embodied sound, breath and song.

A professional musician for over 20 years, Sarah has worked extensively in the music industry. About Gill - Gill trained as a classical actor in 1979 going on to work in the West End in musicals. In 1983, a chance meeting with some jazz musicians changed her career path that would culminate in her becoming a critically acclaimed Jazz Singer for the next 40 years. She has recorded 5 CDs and worked in all the London clubs including being crowned the Queen of Ronnie Scott’s. Career highlights include Singing for His Holiness the Dali Lama and appearing on stage with Bobby McFerrin at the Royal Festival Hall.
During her life she has been a chef, café and conference centre owner, festival curator, radio DJ, composer, playwright, magazine columnist. She has had three commissions for the Croydon Festival of New Theatre “Croydonites”. One of her pieces she co-wrote and performed with Joanna Scanlan. Now due to the COVID-19 difficulties she has retrained as an Independent celebrant. A new vocation that draws on all her wide skills and experiences. Gill believes in the channelling of energy into the creative process and works on an entirely intuitive level to express herself in her work.
