Their latest album, Colossal, is being released on August 23rd on Learning Curve Records. In short, the album is amazing. Full of lush textures and dynamics, in some part, due to Steve Albini’s sonic treatment that he kind of had on all the projects he worked on. Some part, Laura and the band grabbing hold and claiming stake of themselves as seasoned artists fully in control of their powers as they rolled into their third full length record.

Adam MacGregor is a long time friend, and we've been talking about doing one of these for quite some time. And now finally here we are! I heard you missed us, we're BACK!
Kidding aside, folks, this was a great talk with Adam who is a very talented multi-instrumentalist. He's been in many bands, but he's spending his time these days focusing on two projects, Brown Angel and Soft Corner. Both representing different halves of his artistic brain. And Van Halen's 1984, being a central focus of inspiration on both, and apparent through both of those projects. It's a pretty great choice now that I know all of Adam's work and much more about Van Halen and 1984 specifically. This is a very special episode for me. Today's guest is none other than the front man of the band I've joined, GNARNIA. I've know Chris for some time now, and he's always struck me as a cool guy. Nice dude. Welcoming. And a hell of a front person. I've been a genuine fan before being a member. So this was a great public opportunity for me to get to know him better. This was an in person interview, so there are some irregularities about it, but that's just the way it goes. He came in to talk about Sublime's 40 oz. to Freedom, which is an album also dear to my heart. So through that lens we touch on being young and dumb, finding punk and hip hop at an early age, seeing Sublime(4 times!) before Bradley's untimely death, skating, surfing, and of course GNARNIA's latest album the double EP Thin Ice/Crime Town available as a limited lathe cut 12" vinyl. Jon is very much a New Yorker, though and through. Not exactly what I expected when approached with the idea of speaking to a "industrial" artist that makes heavy, synth driven punk about Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral. Further confounding was the idea that he has been hearing disabled for the majority of his life. That was something that made it irresistible to pass up. And I'm glad I didn't. Bangladeafy is carving out their own path of heavy synth based rock with a punk intensity and attention span. Most albums clocking in under 20 minutes. Their latest album, Vulture (being released June 21, 2024 on Nefarious Industries) is not different in that regard but there's certainly an evolution happening there and we touch on some of that in this conversation. Super excited to bring this conversation I had with Sarah Greenwell to your ears! If by chance you're not familiar with Sarah's bands(Gymshorts or Greeensleeves) you should really look into them. Especially if you know and like Girls debut album, Album. There are certainly some similarities, and I have to say, I love both equally. Gymshorts is the vehicle by which Sarah does the majority of her touring, and though they don't have any dates announced as of yet, they're bound to have something coming up very soon. Matt McGuyer is an incredibly talented singer and songwriter. As you'll learn through this conversation, he's been surrounded by and learning how to play music since he was 5! And it shows! Though, he has not been able to get any recorded works published until now, I can only assume the floodgates have been bashed open and we'll be hearing a lot more from Matt.
This conversation is a bit heavy handed on the loss of Bryan St. Pere. Only because Amblare's new album will most likely be it's only due to Bryan's untimely and tragic passing. It is nice to have Matt to share his personal experiences of getting to know and work with Bryan intimately. Upon being approached to speak with Jem from We Empty Rooms in Castlemaine, AU, I had to dig into as much of the Dead catalog as possible(there's a lot!). Then I found out about the types of releases WER does, like Dead's new album, Burn Us Clean, a box set of 9 split 7" singles! Most everything they release has amazing artwork which is all silksreened. Then Jem chose this album by Harvey Milk! Fucking bonkers! There's so much to get into, and maybe that's why this show is a little longer than usual, but there was a lot to get in there. The long and the short of it is, if you're here because you know and like Jem's band, Dead and don't know Harvey Milk, you might want to get into them. They have some interesting similarities. and Dead has worked closely with some members of Harvey Milk on some songs. Or if you're here because you like Harvey Milk and this crazy album, A Small Turn of Human Kindness, then you might want to give Dead a shot. also, if you're hunting for any kind of information about this enigmatic album, well this might be the stop for you. It's nice to be able to dive into something other than heavy, loud, aggressive, noise rock. Not that there's anything wrong with that. And my guest today, Charlie Schmid, would probably agree with me. Having been the drummer for bands like Vaura and Tombs, he's no stranger to loud aggressive music. With that being said, you might think maybe listening to and making music like Chris Isaak is the stranger thing. But it's not. And hopefully this conversation can shed a little bit of light on what that's like or how that can happen.
Silvertone is a great album that draws from the well of old country, honky tonk, rockabilly and even a touch of blues. And Del Judas' music is very similar. He will be releasing a song called Angela on March 15, 2024. This will be the first single from his forthcoming new album. I think the best way to stay in the know about what Del Judas is up to will be at his website.

Goddamnit! Whores is one hell of a band! New album is coming out April 16 on The Ghost is Clear Records. Vinyl presale is underway now and already on it's third pressing! Get it while you can. Lord knows it might be your only chance. Despite what you might think of the band's name, Christian(and I'm sure the other members of the band) ia a kind sweet person that just happen to make brutal, gut punching music. And if you're a fan of heavy noise rock and such, this is the band you want to know. National headlining tour will be under way very soon. Catch them if they're close to you.
In case you aren't familiar with Helmet, they're a close kin to what Whores do. A fairly obvious influence on Christian, so if you by chance don't know them or this album, please check it out. You'll probably like it. Hard to find good information about it, but I found some stuff that worked out pretty well.

Blake Bickel is an interesting dude. In this talk I get as deep as I can into his past, growing up while moving frequently. Desperately trying to get his hands on exciting music while trying to find his own passion. Eventually stumbling across The Melvins, and it was all over from there. If you know and like Melvins' Houdini, there's a good chance you like Blake's band, Bronson Arm. They're similarly very heavy and aggressive music, but it's my opinion that Bronson Arm adds a touch more melody to their tunes. Try it out yourself and see what I mean. They have a lovely splattered vinyl out right now on Learning Curve Records and will be touring throughout the year. Find them in all these links.

It is an honor to bring to you Eddie Shaw! The bass player of The Monks! The Monks have been a long time influence and inspiration to me, personally, as well as being a influence over countless bands since 1966 through today thanks to the rediscovery of the band through Ugly Things Magazine in the 90's. Their album, Black Monk Time, has since been reissue many times through many labels and they have even had some previously unreleased songs released for the first time through Jack White's Third Man Records.
It's a wild and incredible story which I am honored to have been able to sit with Eddie and try to get a full description of what was happening at the time, what was informing their direction, the continued legacy and what he's been up to lately.

This was a great conversation which starts, like most all these conversations, with in depth coverage of these artists and how they were introduced to music, and how they found this album which they have deemed a significant inspiration to them. Oh man! This was a hard one.
Do you know this album? Does it illicit pain, discomfort, joy, sadness, grief or shame? Maybe all those things within one song? If you have heard this album and not experienced at least two of those feelings, you may have missed the point.
I and my guest, Doug of Quits, may not be scholars of music, and free jazz in particular, but I don't think you need to be to understand this album on an emotional level. It's funny how some bands just develop a buzz about them fairly quick, while others seem to disappear into mediocrity. Both can be said about both of these groups. Guji is a very new band that, at the time of this recording, have only played a handful of shows and release their first recording. And here they are getting publicity and having their album released by a label. Whereas, The Monks had only finally received any kind of notoriety decades after they broke up.
Either way, they are both great bands and should be heard!

Each episode has it's challenges in researching the chosen album by the guest. Some are not so hard. Maybe even easy. Others make you wish you were dead.
That's not saying that this is a horrible album. It's not. It's a great album by a great band. A mythical group that I think is fairly obscure. Obviously there are a great number of people that know and love Goblin, but even with that being said, how many of those people truly know much about this band? Well, my guest today does. Steve Moore, best known for his band Zombi, not only loves this band and found them to be integral to his own career, but he knows these guys and has toured with them briefly!
And one of the most interesting parts is that, if it weren't for this album, he may have never even started Zombi, let alone scoring films. A true pinnacle of inspiration and something that we strive for here on this show.
