  • Alex and Karen chat with musicians Em Postl and Thomas Hoeller about Streams Poetry Project, their music collaboration that transforms poetry through vocals and guitar. They give an in-depth look into the natural evolution of this project over the last 8 years, from the organic formation of the project that began with some improvisation over a book of poetry by Rumi, to their current focus of working with more local poets and getting their songs recorded. They examine their love of stream-of-consciousness style improvisation (which informed the name of the project); how they vibe off of one another; and how using intuition rather than intellectualizing their source material has allowed them to explore and give new life to works that they love.

They chat about his globetrotting experiences and dive into the music philosophies he holds that have allowed him to pursue so many different types of music projects with a vast array of people. • Alex and Karen are joined this week by musician, writer, teacher and certified fashionista (at least in Karen’s mind) Francis Henson! He brings with him a lot of great topics for them to dive into, like the idea of artistic identity as intent rather than content; our connection to music and art in adolescence; and music as a study of humanity. They explore Francis’ globetrotting childhood that began in The Philippines and brought him to Kazakhstan before ending up here in Vancouver, and talk about what effects that had on his understanding of himself and the world around him. And if that wasn’t enough, they also have a very impassioned discussion about fashion and the trends that they love to hate.

Sam and Keely share how they individually got involved with the project and how it’s evolved since they joined the team, and get into the nitty gritty of what it takes to run a registered non-profit that works with “creative people, not organized people”. They get into so many different aspects of the project, such as the challenges they face working with such a large roster of volunteers; why creating a safe space is at the forefront of the group’s mission; the aspects of the project that are most meaningful for them; and the importance of a vibe check when deciding on who to work with.
