  • On this Coach and Coordinator Podcast, we bring you a story of transformation, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of coaching.

We sit down with Zach Crespo, a former college football coach who transitioned from the high-stakes world of coaching in the Power 5 to a fulfilling career that keeps him close to the game he loves.

Zach's journey is marked by dedication, adaptability, and the courage to balance professional ambition with personal fulfillment. From his early days as a student assistant at the University of Central Florida under legendary coach George O'Leary, to coaching at top-tier programs, Zach's experiences have shaped him into a mentor and leader off the field.

Zach shares the lessons he learned in college football, the pivotal moments that led him to step away from coaching, and how he found new purpose and success with Vertical Raise, a company revolutionizing fundraising for athletic programs.

Zach's story resonates with situations we all must face within our careers. The crossroads he faced are something we all reflect on. I know every year in November I get calls from college coaches contemplating what their next steps are inside or outside of the game. For Zach, it led to a lucrative career while still getting his coaching fix as a “fundraising coach.”

While Zach decided a pivot was necessary, his insight is valuable to any coach inside or outside of the game right now, especially as you think about how you develop your skills and relationships.

  • In this segment from the 2023 COOL Clinic, Scott Fuchs, the assistant offensive line coach for the Tennessee Titans, discusses his preference for the short-set technique in pass blocking.
Coach Fuchs emphasizes the importance of effort over technique, highlighting how maximum effort on each play is crucial for success on the football field. He explains the concept of task versus result, focusing on the importance of understanding and executing the task at hand rather than being reactive to the defense. Fuchs also touches on creating distortion for protection, simplifying pass-blocking techniques, and the significance of maintaining a wide base for effective pass-blocking.
Fuchs also addresses the technique of angle sets, stressing the importance of turning shoulders to the defender and avoiding oversetting to prevent the defender from gaining an advantage. Additionally, he highlights the role of guards in handling stunts and games to disrupt the defense and maintain control in pass protection.

  • Tim Kight died peacefully this past Saturday, May 4th.

Tim was Founder and Chairman of Focus 3, a firm whose mission is to help companies around the world align the power of leadership, culture, and behavior to achieve exceptional results. A dynamic communicator, Tim focused on the critical factors that distinguish great organizations from average organizations. He delivered a powerful message on the behavior skills that accelerate execution.

Kight was a part of Urban Meyer's Ohio State staff, and the two went 83-9 during their time working together, including a national championship in 2014.

His work with the Ohio State Football program has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and in the New York Times best-seller Above the Line.  He is the author of several high impact training programs: Lead Now, The Power of Culture, Attitude Matters, and The R Factor.

His son Brian who has co-hosted over 40 episodes of Coach and Coordinator said of his father via X,
“My dad, Tim Kight, died peacefully in his sleep last night,” Brian said. “He was so many things, to so many people, to so many of you. Whether or not you got to meet him, you felt him. He was that kind of presence. But to me he was just Dad. And that was everything. I love you, Dad.”

Urban Meyer also lamented Kight's passing, reflecting on their time together via X.
“I met Tim Kight in Spring 2013. His impact on me personally, on our staff, and on our team was profound. He was a passionate competitor and loved helping people get better. A great leader, teacher, mentor, and friend. God's Mercy and Grace are on the Kight family.”

While I was with USA Football we partnered with Focus 3 to teach coaches the systems he created. I was honored to have known and learned from Tim Kight.

He was a man of impact who, through his teaching, positively influenced thousands and thousands of people to utilize the systems he created to instill cultures within their organization, producing positive experiences in peoples’ lives.

Today’s episode of Coach and Coordinator podcast is from the archives.  In January of 2018 Tim and Brian Kight, joined me live at the AFCA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. We discussed the importance of organizing, implementing, and simplifying a system for leadership and culture.
