Don't miss out on this insightful conversation!
Today, Nicole and Erin talked about
The families' perspectives and roles are critical. It’s not something that’s taught a whole lot. You’re growing up with them and their career. Without conversation and explanation about certain things, your child could internalize them in various ways. There need to be conversations about the importance of flexibility; you need to understand that every day is a little bit different when you’re a police officer, so you need to have that flexibility.Host: Nicole Davison
Guest: Erin Craw
RESOURCES
Erin Craw, Ph.D., earned her doctorate in communication from Chapman University in Southern California, emphasizing health and interpersonal communication. Her research interests are at the intersection of health and interpersonal communication regarding social support, stigma, and resilience. Her dissertation explored police officers’ preferences for support and factors influencing mental health-related disclosure decisions. [05:33] You could have an idea of what you want to do with your career, but until you’re experiencing the good, the bad, all of that, you don’t know if that’s really what you want; I think the best thing is to go out there and try[12:06] If you go up and you bring whatever the best version of yourself is every day, then that’s enough; it’s gonna be good enough[16:16] Recruiters can only be as truthful and honest, and transparent as they’d like to be if you don’t reciprocateHost: Nicole Davison

Today, Nicole and Rebecca talk about:
[13:00] Humor is an excellent way for those of us navigating any struggle in life; it’s a way to relate to other people and bring positivity into a dark, heavy topic.[22:02] Proud does not equal loud; you don’t need to run a social media page, wear blue line clothes, or shout from the rooftops that you are proud of your spouse. What really matters is what’s happening inside your home.[31:58] It’s okay to put those boundaries in place and say, “that situation’s not really in my wheelhouse, and I don’t feel comfortable talking about it; I’m still processing”Host: Nicole Davison

In this episode, Nicole interviews Scott Driscoll. Scott is the founder of Internet Safety Concepts, an education business focused on educating people on being safer on the internet. Together, Nicole and Scott talk about what exactly led Scott onto this path and why internet safety can be crucial for our families when exploring the internet.
Today, Nicole and Scott talked about the following:
[12:47] If we’re gonna give our children these devices, I think as parents we’re obligated to understand there’s safety to go along with it [the internet][21:42] Once something is seen, it’s hard to take back - once our children’s innocence is gone because of things we’ve seen or learned, we can’t regain that[36:25] Less is more; have one or two apps you really like, lock it down to private, communicate with the people you know and trust - then we can use it for fun, for creativity, for the communication it was meant to beHost: Nicole Davison
Guest: Scott Driscoll
Scott Driscoll started his law enforcement career in 1988 and served as a youth officer for most of his tenure. In 1992, he began teaching drug education in the local school system, which started his journey into educating youth.
In 2003, Scott became a member of the FBI Innocent Images Task Force in New Haven, Connecticut. Many of his investigations included undercover online investigations, child pornography, and other crimes involving child victims. While investigating these crimes, he realized one element of computer crimes was missing - education on the internet and technology safety. This was the impetus for Scott to begin teaching groups outside of the schools about internet dangers and how to be safe on the internet and while using other technology.
In 2007, Scott started an Internet Safety Concepts consulting/education business. With this company, Scott has reached more people through conferences and seminars. His message is clear: if you don’t think about safety while on the internet and using other technology, you can put yourself and your family in danger. Scott has presented to thousands of students, parents, religious groups, education administrators, teachers, and the law enforcement community.

Today, Nicole and Peter talked about :
[14:01] If you make up a plan, you can accomplish anything.[23:41] When you create music, you tell a story about your life, what influences you, what is important to you, and where your life has taken you.[31:06] Having the proper support around you, having the right resources, knowing that you have the skill, ability, motivation, and the drive to get there - there’s a lot of components to that.Host: Nicole Davison

In this episode, Nicole talks with Cara Belvin, discussing her own personal experience of losing her mother at such a young age and how it influenced her decision to start the non-profit, empowerHer. Together, they unpack the impact that such a loss at a young age can have on every aspect of life.
Today, Nicole and Cara talk about:
People who have an entrepreneurial spirit often see a problem and think they can fix it, which is pretty bold. These individuals don’t allow those negative thoughts in the back of their heads to hold them back. They go for it! Someone’s grief is not shinier, more important than yours - hard things are hard. Everyone will grieve in their own way. Showing empathy can make all the difference in holding space for another. This grief is something that is survivable, but it’s also something that doesn’t go away - rather, it changes at different points in our lives.Host: Nicole Davison
Guest: Cara Belvin
Cara Belvin was desperate to meet another girl like her after her beautiful + brave mother Kit died of breast cancer when she was just 9 years old. Cara’s extended family and friends helped to fill the void left behind by this profound loss. empowerHER® was formed out of the gratitude Cara felt for all the support her family received growing up. As a mother herself, she felt it would be as much for these mothers as it would be for these young girls.
Cara formed empowerHER® as a grassroots organization around her dining room table in a small, coastal town outside of Boston. Word quickly spread across the country of her work and empowerHER®’s mission. Thousands of inquiries came in from women who wished for an organization like empowerHER when they were growing up.
Today, Cara works with these Ambassadors to form new Chapters in communities all around the world in an effort to connect, support + empower children and young adults everywhere. For more information about empowerHER, or to get involved, please visit www.empoweringher.org.

In this episode of Unpacking Perspectives, Nicole talks with Tricia Raiti. Tricia is a close friend of Nicole’s and a colleague of hers! Together, they talk about the lessons that they’ve learned in 2022.
Today, Nicole and Tricia talked about the following:
[7:31] You get through the crazy holiday season and leading up to a brand new year, this is an excellent place to reflect on what the past year has been like for you as an individual and what you want to change for the next year[26:57] As you reflect on this past year, this is one moment where you can look back and think about whether or not you spent your time doing the things you wanted to do. If not, think about what you can do to change that in the upcoming year.[45:04] Not everyone will like everything you do - and that’s okay; those aren’t your people. If those people are putting you down or not supporting or encouraging you, then keep looking for the people who willHost: Nicole Davison

[14:14] When starting with the job search, one of the most complex parts is getting a good grip and making a good impression[24:24] You have to go into every interview thinking and believing that they want you.- they don’t know it yet; you have to market it yourself to prove you’re the correct candidate[36:26] Careers are not linear - where you are now is not going to be where you are ten years from now.
