Today, we debunk three common myths in the hospitality industry and learn how they can impact YOU and your career choices. This episode is essential for anyone looking to expand their professional horizons and break down mental barriers holding you back.
In the hospitality industry, many misconceptions can limit your career growth and opportunities.
When people think of hospitality, they often focus solely on hotels. While hotels represent a significant part of the industry, hospitality encompasses a vast ecosystem that includes restaurants, events, cruises, resorts, private clubs, airlines, and much more. In fact, hospitality accounts for one in every ten jobs worldwide, demonstrating the industry's extensive reach.
One significant misconception in the hospitality industry is the expectation that help will always be available when challenges arise. Unfortunately, this is not always true. Frontline staff often find themselves making critical decisions without immediate support from management. In your professional journey, whether in hospitality or another field, it’s important to cultivate problem-solving skills and learn to operate effectively without relying solely on external support. As one of my mentors used to tell me, “There is no Mr. Starwood.”
The final myth I address is a little on the wonky side, but applies to any major decision/purchase you’ll make in your life. Don’t get caught up in the emotion of the moment, and lose sight of the details of the agreement that you’re about to sign. As the saying goes, the Devil is in the Details.
By debunking these myths in the hospitality industry, we can better understand the expansive opportunities available to us. Remember that your skills are transferable, and the challenges you face can be stepping stones to greater independence and decision-making prowess. Consider how these insights can apply to your career and open up new avenues for growth.

Ever felt dismissed during a travel experience? Here’s why hospitality sometimes misses the mark.
Tag someone who needs to hear this!
I've recently had two frustrating experiences that left me questioning the essence of hospitality.
In Germany, at a hotel, I was told breakfast wasn’t included despite clear evidence saying otherwise. Instead of listening, the front desk was dismissive, showing a lack of humility.
In Costa Rica, after a long day of travel, we were denied a moment to regroup before dinner. The insistence on sticking to the schedule over our comfort shattered any trust in their hospitality.
These moments aren’t just about the specifics, but about the art of making guests feel cared for. It’s about listening and adapting to the needs of those before you.
What are your thoughts on these cultural differences? Have you faced similar situations? Let’s chat in the comments!

Perceptions in hospitality are often inaccurate — and that’s where real connections begin.
On this episode of unhospitality, Patricia Herrera, a.k.a. Patty Yankee, walks us through some of her more memorable experiences in this industry.
She confides that she can be quick to build perceptions from LinkedIn profiles, email exchanges, or general assumptions. But she soon learns that those perceptions can be wildly off.
For expample, she was shocked when making sales calls in Brazil by a client who shared their love for NYC hip-hop and street art, despite never having been.
And speaking of street art, Patty shares the story of brilliant client who spun a hotel construction project into an interactive art installment, converting a near disaster into a centerpiece of her client’s experience.
This industry isn't just about the service or the product; it’s about the human stories behind it. When we let go of our stereotypes and truly see others, we unlock authentic relationships that can change everything.
And trust me when I say, Patty is one of the most authentic people around.
What’s the most surprising perception you've realized was wrong? Comment below—I’d love to hear your stories.

From Pakistan to Dubai: A Journey of Hospitality and Resilience
In the world of hospitality, stories of resilience and determination often take center stage. In this episode of unhospitality, we dive deep into the remarkable journey of Mohammad Haider, who took a wild path to becoming a senior leader in luxury hospitality in Dubai. Join us as we explore the unique experiences that shaped his career and his insights on the industry.
Mohammad Haider's story begins in Pakistan, although he never lived there. Growing up in Saudi Arabia, he was exposed to a diverse culture. His father, a professor, inspired him to embrace new opportunities. When his family moved to Gainesville, Florida, Mohammad faced the challenges of being an expat, which compelled him to stay laser focused on growth and making his way in the world. He was determined to pursue the American dream, which set the foundation for his future.
Initially drawn towards a career in sports medicine, Mohammad's interest shifted when he met with a guidance counselor at school. "What else can I do?" he asked, leading to a discovery of the hospitality industry. The idea of working in hotels and airlines intrigued him, and he decided to pursue a degree in hospitality management at the Rosen College of Hospitality in Orlando, Florida.
Mohammad's journey is further enriched by his immigrant mentality. He described it as a mindset of resilience and determination, stemming from his family's sacrifices. "You come to a country with nothing; it has to work or you go back to nothing," he explained. This drive to succeed and build a better future for himself and his family is a common thread among many immigrants, showcasing their hard work and dedication.
Mohammad Haider's journey from a young boy in Saudi Arabia to a prominent figure in luxury hospitality in Dubai is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the willingness to embrace change. His story brought me to tears, and emphasizes the importance of heart, mentorship, community, and the immigrant experience in shaping one’s career.
And he’s looking for his next opportunity to lead a team. I’ve seen the leader behind the resume. Any organization that understands performance, culture, and accountability should move fast. There aren’t a lot of Mohammad Haide’s in the world. He’s open to the conversation. The question is who’s ready to have it?

I learned that the world is so much bigger than what we know. My perspective shifted completely. Traveling opened my mind to different cultures and ideas. I realized that we often live in our own silos, thinking we know everything, but there's so much we don’t even know that we don’t know.

In this episode, Dee Torrealba shares her journey through some of the most iconic brands and destinations in FL and the Caribbean.
I really admire Dee’s guiding philosophy that hospitality isn’t just about rooms and rates—it's about the connections we make along the way.
From old friends we meet at kickoffs to clients who become family, those bonds are what define us.
And here’s the kicker: when you focus on being authentic and caring, business naturally follows—no need for gimmicks or fake smiles.Maybe it’s time we all remember that behind every deal, there’s a person.
I also love the Dee pushes back on the slow creep of work-life balance becoming work-life imbalance. In fact, she shares an interesting story from the Netherlands, where they’ve mastered the art of boundaries. A guy working for a US company made it clear: after 5 PM, he’s OFF the clock! ⏰
Let’s keep talking about the importance of respecting personal time.
