28 And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father.

31 Fear not therefore: better are you than many sparrows.Nolite ergo timere : multis passeribus meliores estis vos.

39 And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda.
Exsurgens autem Maria in diebus illis, abiit in montana cum festinatione, in civitatem Juda :40 And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
et intravit in domum Zachariae, et salutavit Elisabeth.41 And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
Et factum est, ut audivit salutationem Mariae Elisabeth, exsultavit infans in utero ejus : et repleta est Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth :42 And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
et exclamavit voce magna, et dixit : Benedicta tu inter mulieres, et benedictus fructus ventris tui.43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Et unde hoc mihi, ut veniat mater Domini mei ad me?44 For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Ecce enim ut facta est vox salutationis tuae in auribus meis, exsultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo.45 And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
Et ait Maria : Magnificat anima mea Dominum :47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.The Visitation of Our Blessed Lady, The Blessed Virgin Mary visits Elizabeth and Jesus visits and sanctifies John. Wherefore St John leaps with joy and Elizabeth filled with the Holy Ghost exclaims "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb".

30 Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.
Et inclinato capite tradidit spiritum.31 Then the Jews, (because it was the parasceve,) that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath day, (for that was a great sabbath day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
Judaei ergo ( quoniam parasceve erat) ut non remanerent in cruce corpora sabbato ( erat enim magnus dies ille sabbati), rogaverunt Pilatum ut frangerentur eorum crura, et tollerentur.32 The soldiers therefore came; and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him.
Venerunt ergo milites : et primi quidem fregerunt crura, et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo.33 But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
Ad Jesum autem cum venissent, ut viderunt eum jam mortuum, non fregerunt ejus crura,34 But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water.
sed unus militum lancea latus ejus aperuit, et continuo exivit sanguis et aqua.35 And he that saw it, hath given testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true; that you also may believe.
1 In those days again, when there was a great multitude, and had nothing to eat; calling his disciples together, he saith to them:
In diebus illis iterum cum turba multa esset, nec haberent quod manducarent, convocatis discipulis, ait illis :2 I have compassion on the multitude, for behold they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat.
Misereor super turbam : quia ecce jam triduo sustinent me, nec habent quod manducent :3 And if I shall send them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way; for some of them came from afar off.
et si dimisero eos jejunos in domum suam, deficient in via : quidam enim ex eis de longe venerunt.4 And his disciples answered him: From whence can any one fill them here with bread in the wilderness?
Et responderunt ei discipuli sui : Unde illos quis poterit saturare panibus in solitudine?5 And he asked them: How many loaves have ye? Who said: Seven.
Et interrogavit eos : Quot panes habetis? Qui dixerunt : Septem.6 And taking the seven loaves, giving thanks, he broke, and gave to his disciples for to set before them; and they set them before the people.
Et praecepit turbae discumbere super terram. Et accipiens septem panes, gratias agens fregit, et dabat discipulis suis ut apponerent, et apposuerunt turbae.7 And they had a few little fishes; and he blessed them, and commanded them to be set before them.
Et habebant pisciculos paucos : et ipsos benedixit, et jussit apponi.8 And they did eat and were filled; and they took up that which was left of the fragments, seven baskets.
And they that had eaten were about four thousand; and he sent them away.
Jesus miraculously feeds 4000. He foreshadows how he will feed the souls of men by means of the Holy Sacament-True Bread from heaven.

13 And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?Venit autem Jesus in partes Caesareae Philippi : et interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens : Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis?
14 But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15 Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am?Dicit illis Jesus : Vos autem, quem me esse dicitis?
16 Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God.Respondens Simon Petrus dixit : Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.
17 And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.
18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.
19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.

15 When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter: Simon son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs.Cum ergo prandissent, dicit Simoni Petro Jesus : Simon Joannis, diligis me plus his? Dicit ei : Etiam Domine, tu scis quia amo te. Dicit ei : Pasce agnos meos.
16 He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs.Dicit ei iterum : Simon Joannis, diligis me? Ait illi : Etiam Domine, tu scis quia amo te. Dicit ei : Pasce agnos meos.
17 He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my sheep.Dicit ei tertio : Simon Joannis, amas me? Contristatus est Petrus, quia dixit ei tertio : Amas me? et dixit ei : Domine, tu omnia nosti, tu scis quia amo te. Dixit ei : Pasce oves meas.
18 Amen, amen I say to thee, when thou wast younger, thou didst gird thyself, and didst walk where thou wouldst. But when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldst not.
19 And this he said, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had said this, he saith to him: Follow me.Hoc autem dixit significans qua morte clarificaturus esset Deum. -
20 For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.
But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Ego autem dico vobis : quia omnis qui irascitur fratri suo, reus erit judicio. Qui autem dixerit fratri suo, raca : reus erit concilio. Qui autem dixerit, fatue : reus erit gehennae ignis.23 If therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar, and there thou remember that thy brother hath any thing against thee;
Si ergo offers munus tuum ad altare, et ibi recordatus fueris quia frater tuus habet aliquid adversum te :24 Leave there thy offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to thy brother: and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift.

1 And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed: nor hidden, that shall not be known.
For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness, shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers, shall be preached on the housetops.
And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
But I will shew you whom you shall fear: fear ye him, who after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you, fear him.
Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

Nolite ergo timere : multis passeribus pluris estis vos.8 And I say to you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God.

27 Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have?
Tunc respondens Petrus, dixit ei : Ecce nos reliquimus omnia, et secuti sumus te : quid ergo erit nobis?28 And Jesus said to them: Amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting.

57 Now Elizabeth's full time of being delivered was come, and she brought forth a son.
58 And her neighbours and kinsfolks heard that the Lord had shewed his great mercy towards her, and they congratulated with her.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him by his father's name Zachary.
60 And his mother answering, said: Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.Innuebant autem patri ejus, quem vellet vocari eum.
63 And demanding a writing table, he wrote, saying: John is his name. And they all wondered.

67 And Zachary his father was filled with the Holy Ghost; and he prophesied, saying:Et Zacharias pater ejus repletus est Spiritu Sancto : et prophetavit, dicens :

29 And Jesus answering, said to them: You err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
For in the resurrection they shall neither marry nor be married; but shall be as the angels of God in heaven.
And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken by God, saying to you:
De resurrectione autem mortuorum non legistis quod dictum est a Deo dicente vobis :32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob? Non est Deus mortuorum, sed viventium.33 And the multitudes hearing it, were in admiration at his doctrine.
Et audientes turbae, mirabantur in doctrina ejus.34 But the Pharisees hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, came together:
Pharisaei autem audientes quod silentium imposuisset sadducaeis, convenerunt in unum :35 And one of them, a doctor of the law, asking him, tempting him:

Magister, quod est mandatum magnum in lege?37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.
Ait illi Jesus : Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et in tota anima tua, et in tota mente tua.38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.
Hoc est maximum, et primum mandatum.39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Secundum autem simile est huic : Diliges proximum tuum, sicut teipsum.40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.

1 And it came to pass, that when the multitudes pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Genesareth,
Factum est autem, cum turbae irruerunt in eum ut audirent verbum Dei, et ipse stabat secus stagnum Genesareth.2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
Et vidit duas naves stantes secus stagnum : piscatores autem descenderant, et lavabant retia.3 And going into one of the ships that was Simon's, he desired him to draw back a little from the land. And sitting he taught the multitudes out of the ship.
Ascendens autem in unam navim, quae erat Simonis, rogavit eum a terra reducere pusillum. Et sedens docebat de navicula turbas.4 Now when he had ceased to speak, he said to Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
And Simon answering said to him: Master, we have labored all the night, and have taken nothing: but at thy word I will let down the net.
Et respondens Simon, dixit illi : Praeceptor, per totam noctem laborantes nihil cepimus : in verbo autem tuo laxabo rete.6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes, and their net broke.
Et cum hoc fecissent, concluserunt piscium multitudinem copiosam : rumpebatur autem rete eorum.7 And they beckoned to their partners that were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were almost sinking.
Et venerunt, et impleverunt ambas naviculas, ita ut pene mergerentur.8 Which when Simon Peter saw, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
Quod cum vidisset Simon Petrus, procidit ad genua Jesu, dicens : Exi a me, quia homo peccator sum, Domine.9 For he was wholly astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken.
And so were also James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
Et ait ad Simonem Jesus : Noli timere : ex hoc jam homines eris capiens.11 And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things, they followed him.
1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride.
Tunc simile erit regnum caelorum decem virginibus : quae accipientes lampades suas exierunt obviam sponso et sponsae.2 And five of them were foolish, and five wise.
Quinque autem ex eis erant fatuae, et quinque prudentes :3 But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them:
sed quinque fatuae, acceptis lampadibus, non sumpserunt oleum secum :4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps.
prudentes vero acceperunt oleum in vasis suis cum lampadibus.5 And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept.
Moram autem faciente sponso, dormitaverunt omnes et dormierunt.6 And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold the bridegroom cometh, go ye forth to meet him.
Media autem nocte clamor factus est : Ecce sponsus venit, exite obviam ei.7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.
Tunc surrexerunt omnes virgines illae, et ornaverunt lampades suas.8 And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out.
Fatuae autem sapientibus dixerunt : Date nobis de oleo vestro, quia lampades nostrae extinguuntur.9 The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
Responderunt prudentes, dicentes : Ne forte non sufficiat nobis, et vobis, ite potius ad vendentes, et emite vobis.10 Now whilst they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut.
But at last come also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us.
Novissime vero veniunt et reliquae virgines, dicentes : Domine, domine, aperi nobis.12 But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not.

13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.
Vos estis sal terrae. Quod si sal evanuerit, in quo salietur? ad nihilum valet ultra, nisi ut mittatur foras, et conculcetur ab hominibus.14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.
Vos estis lux mundi. Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem posita,15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.
So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Sic luceat lux vestra coram hominibus : ut videant opera vestra bona, et glorificent Patrem vestrum, qui in caelis est.17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.
Amen quippe dico vobis, donec transeat caelum et terra, jota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege, donec omnia fiant.19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

14 For even as a man going into a far country, called his servants, and delivered to them his goods;
Sicut enim homo peregre proficiscens, vocavit servos suos, et tradidit illis bona sua.15 And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every one according to his proper ability: and immediately he took his journey.
Et uni dedit quinque talenta, alii autem duo, alii vero unum, unicuique secundum propriam virtutem : et profectus est statim.16 And he that had received the five talents, went his way, and traded with the same, and gained other five.
And in like manner he that had received the two, gained other two.
Similiter et qui duo acceperat, lucratus est alia duo.18 But he that had received the one, going his way digged into the earth, and hid his lord's money.
Qui autem unum acceperat, abiens fodit in terram, et abscondit pecuniam domini sui.19 But after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reckoned with them.
Post multum vero temporis venit dominus servorum illorum, et posuit rationem cum eis.20 And he that had received the five talents coming, brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou didst deliver to me five talents, behold I have gained other five over and above.
Et accedens qui quinque talenta acceperat, obtulit alia quinque talenta, dicens : Domine, quinque talenta tradidisti mihi, ecce alia quinque superlucratus sum.21 His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam; intra in gaudium domini tui.22 And he also that had received the two talents came and said: Lord, thou deliveredst two talents to me: behold I have gained other two.
His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam; intra in gaudium domini tui. -
1 And it came to pass, that when the multitudes pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Genesareth,
Factum est autem, cum turbae irruerunt in eum ut audirent verbum Dei, et ipse stabat secus stagnum Genesareth.2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
27 And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave thee suck.
But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God, and keep it.
At ille dixit : Quinimmo beati, qui audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt illud. The holy Mother of God is blessed among women.

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
And whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
Et qui non bajulat crucem suam, et venit post me, non potest meus esse discipulus.28 For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it:
Quis enim ex vobis volens turrim aedificare, non prius sedens computat sumptus, qui necessarii sunt, si habeat ad perficiendum,29 Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him,
ne, posteaquam posuerit fundamentum, et non potuerit perficere, omnes qui vident, incipiant illudere ei,30 Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
dicentes : Quia hic homo coepit aedificare, et non potuit consummare?31 Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him?
Aut quis rex iturus committere bellum adversus alium regem, non sedens prius cogitat, si possit cum decem millibus occurrere ei, qui cum viginti millibus venit ad se?32 Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace.
So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple.
Sic ergo omnis ex vobis, qui non renuntiat omnibus quae possidet, non potest meus esse discipulusSt Basil, the Patriarch of Eastern monks, completed his studies of Constantinople and Athens with his friends Gregory and Nanzienzen. He opposed the Arians, and is one of the four great Doctors of the East. He died A.D. 379.
