  • ADAPTING TO CHANGE PODCAST
Tim HJ Rogers and Tim F Nash

I was thrilled to have Tim F Nash on my podcast and found our conversation so engaging that I’ve invited him back for another episode. I'm eager to dive deeper into the topics we discussed and continue our fascinating dialogue.

    Tim F Nash

Tim F Nash has over 30 years of international experience as an educator, innovator, and problem-solver across the private, public, and third sectors. Tim’s impressive background spans work with multinationals and start-ups, particularly in China, technology, and language education.

Tim is the co-founder and Chief Product Officer of Wo Hui Mandarin, where he has revolutionized Mandarin Chinese learning through innovative digital platforms. His achievements include developing a web and mobile platform that transformed a 90% dropout rate into an 87% retention rate for one group of customers. Tim's inventions have earned patents in both the US and China, and he created "HSK Mock," the only officially recognized practice platform for HSK, the world’s most popular Chinese language proficiency tests.

Described as an inspirational driving force and an invaluable team member, Tim brings an encyclopedic knowledge and superb attention to detail to everything he does. His contributions have consistently led to immediate increases in sales volume and overall organizational success.

    Contents

00 - 10 mins - Introduction and background of Tim Nash's journey from Jersey to Singapore and his work with language programs

10 - 20 mins - Addressing the challenge of diverse language backgrounds and using technology for personalized learning

20 - 30 mins - Discussion on the importance of understanding fundamental concepts and the role of AI in education

30 - 40 mins - Cultural differences in education and the impact of language on perception and problem-solving

40 - 50 mins - The influence of history on language and the potential homogenizing effect of AI

50 - 60 mins - The benefits of learning languages for new perspectives and insights, concluding thoughts and invitation for a follow-up discussion on belonging and identity

    Our discussion included

Language serves as a vital tool for communication, shaping our perceptions of the world and influencing the narratives that define our values and the way we navigate life. The historical development of language plays a significant role in this process.

I was particularly moved by the story that compared counting in Chinese and French. This comparison highlights the profound impact language has, not only on children learning a foreign language but on everyone's perception of the world, our history, and how we communicate our values and understand our place—and that of others—in the world. It fosters a sense of belonging, whether it delineates 'us' versus 'them' or builds a sense of community.

The saying that the US and the UK are "two nations divided by a common language" aptly illustrates that even among English-speaking countries, nuances in context, meaning, and purpose in communication can differ significantly. This divergence is even more pronounced across different languages. Exploring these differences is crucial, especially in an era characterized by a global economy, advanced technology, AI, and rapid change, where data is global but meaning remains local.

I have written some thoughts here…
Ai Llm [Large Language Models] Are Also History Models. Whose History Is “true”?

I love doing this podcast with Mark, especially when he takes on a provocative role. He's a creative thinker with extensive knowledge and experience to draw upon. Mark is a fascinating mix of an outsider, a maverick, and an outlier, yet he excels at building teams and fostering community involvement. It's as if he simultaneously exists on both the inside and outside. His curiosity enables him to view different perspectives almost at once. Discussing his ambitions was particularly intriguing, especially his interest in politics. In the podcast, he talks about how advancements in AI and technology have removed some barriers that previously hindered his political aspirations. It seems he might take a political stance in the future, and I think that would be very interesting to watch. This could very well be the prelude to a political career.

    About Marc Winn

Marc is a seasoned change-maker and a vibrant advocate for social evolution, known for his pioneering efforts in various transformative projects. His impressive leadership at TEDxStPeterPort and his visionary work with the Dandelion Project have set remarkable precedents in community innovation and wellness long before the surge in mainstream discussions around mental health and well-being.

Tim HJ Rogers and Evan Smith

This is Part 1 of a two-part Podcast. We welcome feedback on this and any questions you may have for Part 2.

    Evan Smith

Evan is the CEO and Founder of Cicada (Jersey) Limited [who received the first license to grow cannabis in the British isles in 20 years]. I find the discussion around cannabis fascinating, especially his interest in Six Sigma business improvements, measures that matter, and performance enhancement. Cannabis, both as a product and an industry, is intriguing. Additionally, the enhancement of processing performance through methods like Kaizen, Six Sigma, and Total Quality Management are captivating components. It's impressive to see this expertise combined in one person who is a challenging, passionate, and articulate leader in his field. I believe it’s going to be a truly fascinating and enjoyable discussion.

It takes a little time to create the podcast, perform the necessary edits, upload, review, and make improvements before it goes public. Given that I'll be recording this tomorrow, it should be available as a video podcast on YouTube within the next seven days, and shortly after on Apple iTunes as an audio podcast. My podcasts are unscripted with no agenda. I am really interested in listening to people, understanding their experience and sharing their wisdom: people who have done interesting things or have a different perspective. As a coach and consultant the more you learn from other people, the better you can serve and support individuals and organisations with insights and experience, not just your own, but other people's also.

I am really looking forward to this upcoming podcast episode where we'll be diving into a deeply impactful conversation with James Cunningham. James is not just a beacon of hope; he's a revolutionary force in addressing one of the most pressing social issues of our time: the crisis of fatherless homes. His journey from conceptualizing James' Ark to becoming a pivotal figure in redefining fatherhood is nothing short of inspiring.

James' passion is fueled by a profound understanding of the stark realities that accompany the absence of a father in a child's life. His research sheds light on alarming statistics, such as the significant decrease in life expectancy for boys growing up without a father figure, and the broader societal impacts of fatherless homes. However, James' work goes beyond highlighting problems; it's about providing solutions. Through James' Ark, he has pioneered a program that not only supports fathers in overcoming barriers to reconnect with their children but also advocates for systemic change to promote the involvement of fathers post-separation.

What makes James an interesting guest is not just his expertise or his achievements, but his unwavering belief in the power of compassion, empathy, and structured support to mend broken families. His approach is holistic, focusing on emotional support, conflict reduction, and the promotion of equal parenting roles, which he believes are crucial for the well-being of children and society at large.

Join us as we explore James' journey, the transformative work of James' Ark, and the profound difference one person can make in the lives of many. This conversation promises to be not only enlightening but deeply moving, offering insights and hope for anyone touched by the challenges of family separation.

  • ADAPTING TO CHANGE PODCAST
Tim HJ Rogers and Dr Eve Poole OBE

It was great to welcome Dr Eve Poole OBE to my podcast.

Dr Eve Poole OBE is adjunct faculty in leadership for Ashridge at Hult International Business School, following earlier careers working for the Church Commissioners for England and for the Deloitte Consulting capital markets practice. She was Interim CEO of the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland (2023-4), Interim CEO of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2022), Third Church Estates Commissioner (2018-2021), and Chairman of the Board of Governors at Gordonstoun (2015-2021). As well as a degree in theology from Durham University, Eve holds an MBA from Edinburgh University, for which she won the AMBA MBA Student of the Year Award in 1998, and a PhD in capitalism and theology from Cambridge University. She was awarded an OBE in the 2023 New Year Honours List for services to education and gender equality.

In broadly 6 x 10 minute parta we covered the following.

    Part 1: The Human Essence
Dr. Eve Poole discusses the profound implications of AI on understanding what it means to be human, emphasizing the crucial role of leadership in fostering meaning and purpose beyond scientific management.

    Part 2: Leadership in Uncertainty
Leadership's true test comes from navigating uncertainty with wisdom and foresight. Dr. Poole explores how leaders balance the need for certainty with the inherent risks of decision-making in unpredictable environments.

Part 3: Valuing Wisdom Over Data
The conversation delves into the undervaluation of practical wisdom in a data-driven world, stressing the importance of implementation and intuitive knowledge that AI and current educational models often overlook.

Part 4: Intuition and Power Dynamics
Dr. Poole reflects on societal and historical dynamics that suppress intuition and promote conformity. She advocates for embracing peripheral vision and metaphysical understanding to enrich human interactions and decision-making.

Part 5: Identity and Societal Influence
Exploring the formation of identity through societal feedback and the balancing act between individualism and belonging, Dr. Poole discusses the psychological and social underpinnings that shape personal and collective ethics.

Part 6: The Ethics of AI and the Preservation of Humanity
The series concludes with a profound discussion on the ethical implications of AI, the potential obsolescence of human capabilities, and the moral considerations necessary to preserve humanity’s future.

    About her books ...

Leadersmithing: Revealing the Trade Secrets of Leadership.

This a great book, very practical and usable. Good theory, but even better are the insights and practical suggestions for understanding and developing your own leadership skills. The cards are also a great catalyst for conversations, including coaching conversations.

    Robot Souls: Programming in Humanity.

Whilst a great guide on AI including developments, capabilities, and ethics it is also a very interesting book about what it is to be human. If we are are creating AI then we become God-like and it is interesting to think about who we are, and what we value, when we code for the future of the planet (with or without humanity). If we want humanity to continue, we need to explain "why", and that is an interesting discussion when deciding what to add to the algorithm.

    Creative, Curious and Challenging Conversations

    Creative, Curious and Challenging Conversations

My podcasts are unscripted with no agenda. I am really interested in listening to people, understanding their experience and sharing their wisdom: people who have done interesting things or have a different perspective. As a coach and consultant the more you learn from other people, the better you can serve and support individuals and organisations with insights and experience, not just your own, but other people's also.

I have been really looking forward to this podcast with Jason Butler, a professional artist renowned for his captivating portraits. His ongoing project, 'Islanders', delves into the depth and diversity of human character through his exquisite brushwork.

Jason's artistic journey has been nothing short of remarkable. With works displayed thrice at the prestigious National Portrait Gallery in London, his talent has garnered widespread acclaim. You can explore his captivating creations on his website www.jasonbutlerartist.com and on Instagram - @jasonbutlerportraits/ @jasonbutler1970.

What sets Jason apart is not just his technical prowess but also his deep engagement with communities. He's left an indelible mark in Jersey, commemorating significant events such as the Queen's visit and the 350th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Mace. His paintings, adorning the atrium of the States Chambers, stand as testaments to his artistry and dedication.

Beyond accolades, Jason's collaborations with organizations like the Mines Awareness Trust reveal his commitment to social causes. His exhibitions following his visit to Rwanda underscore his ability to infuse art with poignant narratives. A graduate of Bristol Art College and Cheltenham Art College, Jason's journey is a testament to his passion for painting and drawing.

This podcast was truly fascinating. Initially, I never anticipated an artist's workshop to resemble a gym, yet Jason's unique blend of creativity and self-care is utterly intriguing. His approach to art is refreshingly professional, diverging from the expected emotional stereotype often associated with artists. What captivated me most were Jason's perspectives on the world and his methodical approach to his craft. Exploring themes and techniques, such as his focus on figures and portraits, shed light on the depth of his artistic vision.

Engaging in a lengthy conversation with Jason was a genuine exploration for me. I found his insights truly surprising and illuminating. For anyone seeking a valuable and unexpected journey into the mind of an artist, this podcast is a must-listen. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and believe many others will find it equally enlightening.

Give it a listen and prepare to have your perceptions challenged.
