After being sworn in for a second term as president, Cyril Ramaphosa said parties in the government of national unity (GNU) will have to agree to create jobs and work towards economic growth or they will be removed.
The GNU parties are the ANC, DA, IFP, PA and GOOD.
Ramaphosa took oath of office before Chief Justice Raymond Zondo at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. He is expected to announce his cabinet soon.
About 28-million, or 47%, of South Africans rely on social grants. The most recent official unemployment rate is 32.9%, which does not include jobless South Africans who have given up job hunting.
“We are going to get everyone in the GNU to work to create jobs. I am going to make sure that happens” Ramaphosa said. -

EFF leader Julius Malema announced on Thursday night that his party would contest for the parliament speaker and committee chairperson posts. Malema says these were among the party's wishes and decisions, which he expressed in his meeting with ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday morning. The CIC was speaking during a media briefing in Cape Town ahead of parliament's sitting on Friday.

Alan Winde was re-elected for a second term as premier of the Western Cape on Thursday. He received 26 out of 42 votes. The ANC's candidate, Muhammad Khalid Sayed, received 14 votes. Two ballots were spoilt. The election of the premier took place by secret ballot. Winde's election followed the swearing-in of members of the provincial legislature, who took their oath to serve the public. Winde thanked the chamber after his election and promised to serve the province's citizens.

The health department says a second person has died of Mpox less than 24 hours after minister Joe Phaahla provided an update on the spread of the infectious disease. The latest death was a 38-year-old male patient from KwaZulu-Natal. In Gauteng a man living with HIV tested positive for Mpox on Wednesday. This brings the total number of positive cases in the country to six and two deaths in five weeks.

Reneiloe Seemane, better known as Whistle Girl, is now grown up. She has a BA and is completing an LLB.In 2020, a video of Seemane dancing while blowing a whistle went viral on social media. This won the hearts of many South Africans as some dubbed it as an “iconic” moment for amapiano. She was 19 at the time. In 2024, Seemane is 23 and has a BA degree and working towards an LLB. Speaking to TimesLIVE, Seemane said she wants to make education fashionable and the reason she decided to study law was because of the video in 2019.

ActionSA says some parties who form part of the Multi-Party Charter of SA, previously known as the moon-shot pact, have breached their agreement by going into coalition talks with the ANC. The party says it has withdrawn from the charter for this reason. This was announced on Thursday during a briefing by the party on the outcomes of a two-day ActionSA senate meeting. Party leader Herman Mashaba says one of the commitments when entering the MPC agreement was not to entertain negotiations with the ANC.

Associate professor and voting behaviour specialist, Collette Schulz-Herzenberg of the department of political science at Stellenbosch University, says the decline in participation is a concern. The national average stood at 58.6%.
Also weighing in is political expert Asanda Ngoasheng also weighed in, saying another reason some citizens didnt vote is that opposition parties have not convinced them enough that they are a good alternative.
A low voter turnout was also cited as a challenged for ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, who party got below 50% for the first time in 30 years. -
The state has reconsidered its decision to charge a second accused person to join former National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula in the dock.
Mapisa-Nqakula stood alone in a bright blue dress when her matter returned before the Pretoria magistrate's court, where a second accused was expected to be charged with her. She could head to trial alone as the state has decided not to charge any other accused persons. -

The MK Party has called for a rerun, not only a recount, claiming voting irregularities in the 2024 election process. This was announced during an impromptu media briefing at the IEC’s national results operation centre on Saturday evening. More than 20 parties are also contesting the elections alongside the MK Party.
Party leader and former president Jacob Zuma, as well as party members addressed the media. -
Discussions on electing a president and a new government must be completed in the next two weeks. Democracy Works Foundation chairperson Prof William Gumede says an “outlier” coalition government without the ANC is possible.
The party that ushered the country into democracy and freedom, and independently governed South Africa for the past 30 years will need an alliance with another party or other parties to make up the 10% support it lacks to meet the threshold to remain in government.
The ANC garnered 40% of the vote in the 2024 national elections with just over 6.3 million votes. Its loss in support has been attributed to former president Jacob Zuma’s new MK Party and voters' dissatisfaction with the "glorious liberation movement".
Its not a given that the party with the majority will anchor a coalition government. Gumede, says President Cyril Ramaphosa’s job is on the line, coalition partners will come with demands.
The MK Party has made it clear it will not work with an ANC which has Ramaphosa at the helm of the government.
Last year the DA signed a pre-election agreement with smaller parties with a common goal of toppling the party of Nelson Mandela. Its Multi Party Charter partners, such as the IFP, Freedom Front Plus, ACDP and ActionSA, lagged far behind in voter support and did not reach double digit margins to make up the more than 50% needed to form a government. DA leader John Steenhuisen pledged loyalty to the charter after its partners' disappointing results. The parties are expected to meet soon.
At the IEC national results operation centre PA leader Gayton McKenzie suggested the ANC be excluded from a new government.
