  • I tend to focus on other people in the interviews on Timeless Leadership. That’s important! There are so many things to learn from other people.

But I’ve realized that being a leader isn’t only about lifting other people up, it’s about being a teacher and sharing your own insights as well.

So in this episode, you get a little bit more of me than I typically put out there, as I share an episode from the frankly… podcast from Franco.

It’s an important discussion that covers the background behind why I do what I do, and what I believe — including my advice to my 21-year-old self.

I’d be interested to hear your feedback about it.

  • The second in command in any job gets neither the attention nor the respect that the chief does.

By virtue of their timing, the founders and those who came first tend to command the spotlight.

And yet, those who follow them do more than continue a legacy; they need to forge their own path and determine how to create something sustainable.

Lindsay M. Chervinsky, in her new book Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents that Forged the Republic, makes the case that without John Adams’ wisdom and good judgment, America as we know it might not have survived.

  • Telling stories is a form of love.

As Neal Foard shared in this episode,

“It helps when a leader is able to communicate to the people that work for them, that they care about them. This is the power of stories. I don’t have to literally say to you I care about you…because of the stories I choose to tell, I am the type of person that cares about the fate of others.”

Neal ignites the storytelling ability in others with his course, Storyfire. But more than his course, Neal’s take on storytelling and leadership is a way of life. It’s a way of being.

Come for the stories, stay for Neal’s three simple rules for living (I won’t spoil it for you in the notes here), and sign up to get bonus content with additional (and hilarious!) stories from Neal.

  • Leadership requires care. Care that extends to the people around you, for whom leaders are responsible. But also care for the practice of leadership itself.

Ideas about this extend back to Plato, who engaged in many conversations about the responsibilities of leaders, the dangers of too much power, and considering the good of others.

Princeton professor Melissa Lane, whose book Of Rule and Office: Plato’s Ideas of the Political, joins us to explore the impact of Plato's ideas today, as we struggle with concepts of accountability and servant leadership.

We’re fixated on being when we should be intent on becoming. What are we doing, enjoying, and sharing that inform who we are?

In 1831 Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote “It is a luxury to be understood,” and it is still a luxury in the modern day. Perhaps even more so, given the number of modes of communication and fractured attention.

Communication is at the very core of your leadership. Without it, you have nothing. Which is why working on your communication skills is so important.

  • Dr. Marshall Goldsmith has worked with hundreds of very high achievers throughout his career as an executive coach. And in doing so, he noticed something: happiness does not come from achievement.

So he wrote his latest book, The Earned Life, to address that. It will start you on a fresh journey that goes beyond your last achievement and helps you minimize your regrets, allowing you to live the life you were meant to live.

We are living an earned life when the choices, risks, and effort we make in each moment align with an overarching purpose in our lives, regardless of the eventual outcome.

  • Join us as we embark on a four-part series on core leadership skills.

Inscribed on the Temple of Apollo in the 5th century B.C., the phrase “Know thyself” is considered a universal truth. So it’s appropriate that the first leadership skill we’re exploring is self-awareness.

Too many leaders are tone-deaf or ego-driven to be self-aware. And yet, it’s probably the single most important leadership skill, as it makes it possible for other skills to grow.
