The Emerald explores the human experience through a vibrant lens of myth, story, and imagination. Brought to life through the wise, wild, and humorous vision of Joshua Michael Schrei — a teacher and lifelong student of the cosmologies and mythologies of the world — the podcast draws from a deep well of poetry, lore, and mythos to challenge conventional narratives on politics and public discourse, meditation and mindfulness, art, science, literature, and more. At the heart of the podcast is the premise that the imaginative, poetic, animate heart of human experience — elucidated by so many cultures over so many thousands of years — is missing in modern discourse and is urgently needed at a time when humanity is facing unprecedented problems. The Emerald advocates for an imaginative vision of human life and human discourse as it questions deep underlying assumptions about societal progress.

The Imitation of Christ is widely considered one of the greatest manuals of devotion in Christianity. The life of Christ is presented as the highest study possible to a mortal, as Jesus’ teachings far excel all the teachings of the saints. The book gives counsel to read the scriptures, statements about the uses of adversity, advice for submission to authority, warnings against temptation and how to resist it, reflections about death and the judgment, meditations upon the oblation of Christ, and admonitions to flee the vanities of the world. A recording of a Dutch translation of this work is also available (Thomas a Kempis was Dutch but wrote in Latin of course).

Oh, the journey of a church planter—the whole process of prayer and raising support and living in the community and living by faith (literally!). It’s exhausting. But it’s all worth it in the end. We can relate. As we went through the branding and launch process at our own churches, we came to a realization. What if we could start something that had the potential to serve hundreds, perhaps thousands of churches? As a result, we concepted and founded Yellowbox, a creative agency that provides creative direction and design for churches and ministries. We believe that with the right creative coaching and tools, churches can be more effective in sharing the Gospel. Beyond just serving churches creatively, we are passionate about sharing ideas, processes, planning and best practices with others. At the end of the day, we are all in this thing together.
