In this episode of This Is Not a Watermelon, we talk about positioning Palestinian music within a global music scene, cassettes as precious as diamonds, music and resistance, and reiterations of traditional folk music. Global scholar of Palestinian music, activist, and musician Louis Brehony joins us with a roster of musical interludes that take us on a tour of the Palestinian music that should appear on all those "Top 10" rankings we read online.
With each musical interlude, we reflect on whether resistance music is or should be a genre in itself – and if it's even possible to untangle Palestinian music from voices of resistance. Louis shares the struggles to get funding for research related to the "P" word. He highlights the unique characteristics of Palestinian music because of how removed from commercialism it is, and Fairuz as an icon relating to the Palestinian question. Finally, he rebuts the common misconception that all Palestinian music must be sad.

Louis Brehony is an activist, musician, researcher and educator, and a preeminent global scholar of Palestinian music. He is the director of the award-winning documentary film Kofia: A Revolution Through Music (2021) and has published widely on Palestine and political culture in the Palestine Chronicle, Middle East Monitor,Arab Media and Society, and a range of other journals. He received his PhD from Kings College London and a master's in composition from the University of Salford, and performs internationally as a multi-instrumentalist. He has family origins in Ireland and lives in Manchester, UK.

Louis' Book "Palestinian Music in Exile: Voices of Resistance
Palestinian Music in Exile" is a historical and contemporary study of Palestinian musicianship in exile in the Middle East, spanning half a century in disparate locations, including Gaza, Turkey, Kuwait, and Egypt. Grassroots musicians emerge here as powerful actors, their stories taking center stage, offering critiques of existing conditions, and new perspectives on displacement and the transmission of Palestinian narratives, presenting alternative visions for the future.

Sonja Mejcher-Atassi is a professor of Arabic and comparative literature in the Department of English and an associated faculty in the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut. Her research focuses on modern Arabic literature in global perspective, and closely intersects with cultural and intellectual history and memory studies. She is also interested in biography, writers' libraries, collecting practices and literature archives, book culture and art, and aesthetics and politics.

Dr Salman Abu Sitta was born in 1937 in Ma‘in Abu Sitta, in the Beersheba district of Mandate Palestine. An engineer by profession, and the founder and president of the Palestine Land Society, he is most known for his ground-breaking research project mapping of Palestine in the 21st, 20th and 19th centuries, and developing a practical plan for implementing the right of return for all Palestinian refugees.

Starting with the Qattan Foundation's recent exhibition "Gaza: A Moment of Becoming", Yazid explains why this is not an ordinary exhibition, reflecting on the particular importance of Palestinian art and artists today, especially post October 7. He discusses the history of Palestinian art and whether or not October 7 has ushered in a new form of expression, whether it's worth historizing Palestinian art and seeking to conceptualize it in a different way. Finally, he shares insight on international solidarity with Palestine in the art world, the politics of conditional funding and grants, and knowledge production through curation.

Visualizing Palestine is a data-visualization platform that produces factual infographics and visuals to build a rights-based narrative of Palestine and the Israeli occupation. In this conversation, we explore the different pillars of Visualizing Palestine's work and process and how the project came into being. Through the work, we consider the structural inequality, apartheid and occupation that form the Palestinian reality today.
Visualizing Palestine (VP) was established in 2012, and is dedicated to using data and research to visually communicate Palestinian experiences to provoke narrative change. VP envisions a liberated future for Palestinians in a world free from oppression.
Visualizing Palestine’s theory of change is centered on narrative change, with a belief that dominant narratives serve to obscure, justify, and perpetuate oppressive power structures in society. Visualizing Palestine is dedicated to creating narrative interventions that shift these power dynamics, making Palestinian narratives more visible, widely accessible, and powerful as part of wider anti-colonial and anti-racist narratives.

The majority of her work to date are documentaries which focus on the day-to-day realities faced by women and children living in the occupied Palestinian territories and Lebanon. She is widely seen as a pioneer of Palestinian and Arab cinema and has received a number of awards for her work.

Distinguished Palestinian artist Sliman Mansour – whose work has become synonymous with the Palestinian identity and struggle – talks to us about his journey, exploring his influences, the evolution of his art, and his reflections on the role of artists in society.
From his iconic works like "Camel of Hardship" to his innovative use of natural materials during the First Intifada, Mansour shares insights into his creative process and the profound messages behind his art. He shares what it was like growing up in Birzeit, if painting truly was his first love, and why he doesn’t consider himself a “political” artist. Finally, he explains what he feels make art convincing and why patience is so important.
Sliman Mansour is a Palestinian painter, sculptor and cartoonist. A leading figure of the contemporary Palestinian art scene, his artistic style embodies steadfastness in the face of relentless military occupation. His work has also come to symbolize Palestinian national identity.

Taking his film "Spaces of Exception" as a starting point, we talk about reservations and refugee camps as uniquely dual spaces that are all at once akin to prisons, yet a territory where it is possible to practice native sovereignty. He points to the very power of Indigineity in calling nationhood into question, the potent transnational solidarity that exists between Native Americans and Palestinians, and why it is possible to be a settler coloniser without a sponsor state.
Malek Rasamny is a documentary filmmaker, researcher and writer. He was also one of the first afikra presenters when we first launched. He is the co-founder — along with Matt Peterson — of "The Native and the Refugee" which is a multi-media research project that compares and contrasts the societies and struggles of both Native American reservations and Palestinian refugee camps in the Middle East. Much of their work and research culminated in their feature film "Spaces of Exception" which was shot between 2014 and 2017 in Arizona, New York, South Dakota, Lebanon and the West Bank.

"This is not a watermelon" is a podcast about Palestinian history and culture. In this episode, we sat down with Andy Clarno, author of "Neoliberal Apartheid: Palestine/Israel and South Africa after 1994" to understand more about transnational solidarity particularly between South Africa and Palestine. He helped us define apartheid and neoliberalism, sharing what he considers to be a useful working definition of the terms, unpacking their origins, and explaining what systems and realities they actually refer to. We discussed what it takes to dismantle such systems and how essential the Boycott, Divestment and Sanction movement is.
Andy sheds light on the decades-strong transnational solidarity between South Africa and Palestine, walks through the steps it took to achieve liberation in South Africa, and considers whether the post-apartheid South African model is what Palestine should be aspiring to. Finally, Andy explains the concepts of racial capitalism and the relationship between neoliberalism and new forms of apartheid.

Andy Clarno is an associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the coordinator of the Policing in Chicago Research Group and specialises in Sociology and Black Studies. His research interests include racism, capitalism, colonialism, empire, policing and comparative racial formation. He is the author of Neoliberal Apartheid.

Maha Nassar is an Associate Professor of Modern Middle East History and Islamic Studies at the University of Arizona. Specifically, she is a cultural and intellectual historian of the 20th century Arab world with a focus on Palestinian history. Nassar's research looks at the intellectual constructs of social, political and cultural identities to trace the circulation of political vocabularies that construct as well as contest nationalist narratives.
Nassar's book "Brothers Apart: Palestinian Citizens of Israel and the Arab World" examines how Palestinian cultural producers in Israel during the 1950s and 60s positioned themselves within an Arab and "Third World", social, cultural and intellectual milieu that extended far beyond the confines of the Israeli nation state. By mapping the strategies they deployed, her book demonstrates the importance of Arabic newspapers and literary journals in traversing national boundaries and in creating transnational and transregional communities of solidarity. In 2018 Brothers Apart received a Palestine Book Award for academic titles.

Steve lays out the state of the healthcare system in Gaza pre- and post-October 7 and how the absolute destruction taking place is impacting their ability to support Gaza’s children and vulnerable patients. He conveys the reality of what “operational” means for hospitals doing their best to support the community in Gaza right now, as well as the risks posed by the spread of disease now and in the imminent future.
Finally, he explains why he believes there’s no sufficient psychological treatment or support for the trauma that Palestinian children are facing because the real source of the trauma is the continued occupation and state violence that they are enduring.

لن يُمحى التاريخ والثقافة الفلسطينية.
يحذرنا التاريخ من قدرة خطاب وسائل الإعلام المهين واللاإنساني على تمهيد الطريق للعدوان المستهدف والسماح للمجتمع بارتكاب فظائع خطيرة كالإبادة الجماعية. تتضمن مهمتنا التصدي بحزم لهذا السرد اللاإنساني. لطالما وقفت عفكرة في تضامن ثابت مع أخواتنا من فلسطين ومن جميع الجنسيات والأديان في كافة أنحاء العالم ومع من يحتجون بشجاعة على الاحتلال الغير قانوني لفلسطين والذين يدينون عنف المشروع الاستيطاني الإسرائيلي.
بعد أحداث 7 أكتوبر 2023، بدا من المستحيل لنا ان نستمر ببرنامج البودكاست كالمعتاد. لذلك خصصنا برنامج لحلقات خاصة تتعلق بفهم السياق التاريخي لما يحدث في فلسطين. نشرنا جميع الحلقات فور تسجيلها على موقع YouTube وكافة وسائل نشر البودكاست. يعد وقت التسجيل أمرًا أساسيًا لفهم السياق الذي جرت فيه هذه المحادثات، لذا تأكد من الرجوع إليها والاطلاع على كل هذه المحادثات المفيدة مع ضيوف من مختلف التخصصات الذين قد شاركوا وقتهم وبصيرتهم بسخاء في ظل هذه الأوقات العصيبة.
مع دخولنا العام الجديد واستمرار الفظائع، رأينا أنه من الضروري إنشاء سلسلة حصرية مخصصة للتاريخ والثقافة الفلسطينية. فهكذا نشأ هذا البودكاست وسيستمر في الوجود طالما استمر النضال من أجل التحرير والسلام.

عفكرة هي حركة لتنشيط الإهتمام في العالم العربي وتحويله إلى فضول فكري بنّاء. نهدف إلى إعادة تصوير العالم العربي والسرد المهيمن عن المنطقة عبر استكشاف مجتمعي لتاريخ وثقافات العالم العربي - ماضيًا وحاضرًا ومستقبلًا - ومحادثات تنبع من الفضول.
