    Rite of Affirmation

    (Minor Rite)

Being raised outside of the complicated rules of humanity and the simplicity of wolves, Garou-born understand better than most the mercurial nature of assigned roles and the flexibility in what it means to be born of forces only assumed to be opposed. With Crinos lacking defined markers that would typically be used to identify sex, many Garou-born children are frequently raised without gender monikers until these children have announced their gender to the adults in their lives. For pronouns (if the sept is kind), many young English-dominate Garou-born take to using the term Nip as a catch-all until they announce their gender. It’s believed to be shorthand for the historic term for child, knipperkin, though that is contested. Many see this announcement as the first stage of a Garou-born reaching adulthood in much the same way as the first human signs of puberty.

When the Garou-born makes their announcement, they are taught this ritual by elder Garou-born. To perform this ritual the Garou-born must breath in the steam of water that has been heated to boiling over an open flame and contemplate the shifting form of elements that has created the steam. Doing this ritual, allows others to more easily see the Garou-born as they identify even though it does not change their physical appearance. People have to make a conscious effort to misgender the Garou-born and frequently find they can only do it after accidentally acknowledging their true gender. (Out of character accidents will be a free success to Etiquette out of the accident.) The effects last for the day. No roll necessary. Note: it is not uncommon for Garou to brew aromatic tea or coffee to perform this ritual.

Even though, many Garou-born say they’ve never notice a transition in gender appearance that didn’t seem natural as an aspect of growing up, many Homid Garou suffering with gender-dysphoria find that daily performance of this ritual has similar effects to taking HRT.

In the video, Amylin mistakenly credits the name of the Native American Uktena figure to the Shawnee when the name comes from the Cherokee. As said though, the horned serpent does appear in a number of Native American stories under the names of Avanyu (Tewa), Misi-kinepikw (Cree), Msi-kinepikwa (Shawnee), Misi-ginebig (Oji-Cree), Mishi-ginebig (Ojibwe), Olobit (Natchez), Pita-skog (Abenaki), Sinti lapitta (Choctaw), Estakwvnayv (Muscogee), Uktena (Cherokee), Unktehi or Unktehila (Dakota), and Unktehila (Lakota).

The understanding of Uktena most likely used by White Wolf and mentioned in this podcast this been linked below.
