That's right! This week's the last week of our five part series book club for Omens of Chaos! We're talking about the climax of the novel, where all the pieces fall into place and the villain's grand scheme is revealed. While every episode of the book club has contained spoilers, this is the most spoilery of all spoiler episodes, so if you haven't finished the book, you should do that first! Then you should come back and listen to our thoughts on the highlights of the last few chapters of the book, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
If you want to go back and listen to previous book club episodes, this is the page breakdown for the novel:
Part 1: Pg.1-125
Part 2: Pg.126-167
Part 3: Pg.168-253
Part 4: Pg.254-306
Part 5: Pg.307- 413

Omens of Chaos is heating up in this week's Book Club episode as Eula makes some questionable decisions about her own safety and Segante has to come to the rescue. We're starting with the third Interlude, which shows us how Segante has been adjusting to the student life on Arcavios, and then continuing through Eula's ill-advised trip to the Harrier's Wood, her subsequent attempted murder, and Segante's gallant heroism that leaves the two of them "breaking bread" back at the dorm.

Book Club continues with the second Interlude chapter, this time through the point of view of Alandra of Shandalar, through Chapter 17. The students open up about what's keeping them on Arcavios during the upcoming holiday break, then attend a fantastical masquerade, where Eula has a mysterious and unnerving encounter with an upperclassman who gives her either advice or a threat. Afterwards, a trip to the swamp turns into a fight with masked students and tea time with Liliana Vess! A lot happens in these chapters as the novel takes off.

Our book club for Omens of Chaos continues this week with the first interlude, which gives us Jamira's point of view as well as the first concrete signs of a sinister Kasmina, through to Chapter 11! We see the exciting life of students, from laundry to study halls to office hours with a professor who is just a hoot. There's a lot of slices of life happening in this section, and we talk about how we feel about the novel's ability to give us everything we want and need from Magic's first novel in so many years.

We're kicking off our month (and a half) of Omens of Chaos this week with a special guest, Kathleen De Vere of LoadingReadyRun! If you haven't read Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos by Seanan McGuire, you should do that now, because this episode is spoilers all the way down. We're talking about structure, plot, tone, themes, characterization, and all the ways this book succeeded (and some of the ways we think it could have gone further) as both a Magic novel and a novel in its own right.
Starting next week, we'll be doing a deep-dive into the novel chapter by chapter, giving summaries as well as more specific thoughts about the details of the book. Want to read along? Here's how we're breaking down the book:
Part 1: Pg.1-125
Part 2: Pg.126-167
Part 3: Pg.168-253

First of all, the name is Loreley's responsibility.
After the preview panel at MC Vegas, we thought now would be a good time to revisit the story of Jace Beleren since the events of Phyrexia: All Will be One. The last few years of story have all been leading to this moment, as Jace has worked covertly (and somewhat overtly) to enact his plan for planar engineering. What led him from hero to villain, and what exactly has led up to Reality Fracture? Chris and Cary also get to do a little speculation as to what's going to happen, and who we might see writing the story.

It's time for the flavor gems of Secrets of Strixhaven, a show where we look at all the most flavorful cards of the set and talk about art, callbacks, and lore you may have missed! This set is full of callbacks to the first time we were on Arcavios and new mini-stories hidden in the card art and mechanics! There's also Noxious Newt!

This week we're joined by Wizard and author of the story for Secrets of Strixhaven, K Arsenault Rivera! She's contributed to the Magic Story since Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and has been a frequent guest of the podcast over the years since. We talk about writing the students of Strixhaven, as well as catching up with Chandra and Ajani after they've both been through so much.
We had to do some very unusual recording for this episode, so if things sound weird, I did my best!

This week is the final episode discussing the web fiction of Secrets of Strixhaven, including the two side stories for Silverquill and Witherbloom! The stories explore the rocky relationships between the people of the world and tackling grief and loss in different ways. You should read both of them, because they're so good! We also give some thoughts about the overall experience of the stories for this set, and what we're looking forward to in the future.

Secrets of Strixhaven's main story may have concluded with a tremendous cliffhanger, but the side stories begin with one, as we meet Rootha on the literal edge of a cliff! From there we explore Coin Empire ruins with Quint and the perilous world of post-grad life with Zimone. Listen along as we give a summary of what happened in the side stories, and talk about how the characters have grown and changed in the years since Strixhaven.

It's time for the main story of Secrets of Strixhaven! This six episode story is written by returning author K Arsenault Rivera, who is following up with the Strixhaven students last seen during Lorwyn Eclipsed, including the Lorwyn elf Lluwen who is struggling to adjust to life on a new plane. What starts as field work for the students, now in their second year, becomes a disaster and a mystery with the reveal of an angry, giant Archaic slumbering under Titan's Fall. Plus, there's a budding romance!

The Planeswalker's Guide to Secrets of Strixhaven has been released, and along with it a whole host of lore for the world outside of the university! Strixhaven is just one location in the wider world of Arcavios, a plane of dual natures and dueling wizards, marked by six millennia of war and six centuries of peace. Across the Vastlands are countless opportunities for enterprising young mages to make their name, and we're going to tell you about the most exciting locales for field work and internships!

Surprise! The story of Secrets of Strixhaven begins in earnest on March 23rd, but we got an early side story last week that has sent Vorthoses into a tizzy. A student journalist is tasked with interviewing a mysterious new Silverquill faculty member, Professor Ral Zarek, but what she uncovers may never be read (or blue).
We spend most of this episode speculating on what the heck is going on and what we might expect from the story of Secrets of Strixhaven with the information we have so far, and delve a little into that fractured reality of Reality Fracture.

Do you ever look at your Magic cards and think "What does all this really mean?" This week in our Magic 102 series, we're discussing the building blocks of Magic, the card types and core mechanics of the game, and what they mean to the flavor, worldbuilding, and story. Magic is a game, but it's also a storytelling experience, where you are a powerful mage locked in battle with other powerful mages, casting spells and summoning creatures, and this episode will explain how that translates to the cards.

We're starting a new series this week with Let's Cook: Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, a deep dive into the mechanics of the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, from its original inception to its most recent release. This isn't a typical set review or Flavor Gems, but a look at the worldbuilding and flavor of the setting through the lens of its card game mechanics. How flavorful is Evoke? What about Clash? And how well was Hybrid Mana utilized in Shdowmoor and Lorwyn Eclipsed? Let us know how you feel about this new series, and look out for visits to planes in the future such as Ravnica and Arcavios!

The Story Circle reconvenes for one, special episode in honor of the truly most powerful wizard from Dominaria: Barrin. Before he was Barrin, though, he was Barrinalo, a young scribe whose life would be forever changed by the death of another wizard, Pharon. This story by Paul B. Thompson originally appeared in The Secrets of Magic anthology from 2002, edited by Jess Lebow. It is read by the incredible Christopher Wilson.
We will return next week with regular episodes, but in the meantime we hope you enjoy this audio version of a beloved Magic story.
