In this final episode of the season, I’m bringing together many of the themes we’ve explored over recent weeks and looking at one central idea: birth is not just about the destination — it’s about the journey as well.
So often, birth conversations are reduced to outcomes. Was the baby healthy? Did everything go okay? Was everyone safe? And while those things absolutely matter, they are not the full story.
In this episode, I explore what gets lost when birth is viewed only as a medical event. When the focus stays solely on monitoring, managing and achieving an outcome, women can disappear from the centre of their own experience. Birth can start to feel like something that happens around them rather than something they are actively moving through.
I reflect on how this links to many of the topics we’ve covered this season, including decision-making in labour, consent, subtle pressure, nervous system responses and what it means to feel safe, informed and included during birth.
I also explore why two women can experience similar births on paper and walk away feeling completely differently about them. Our previous experiences, beliefs, fears, nervous system responses and sense of self all shape how birth is experienced in real time.
We also touch on the idea of birth as a rite of passage and how this connects to matrescence — the transition into motherhood. Birth is not simply an event to complete. It is part of a much bigger identity shift, and how women move through that process can shape how they step into motherhood afterwards.
This episode is a reminder to prepare for more than just the outcome. To understand yourself. To recognise how you respond under pressure. To stay connected to what matters to you.
And perhaps most importantly, it’s an invitation to stop treating birth as something to simply get through.
Because how you experience birth matters.
And that experience stays with you long after the baby is born.
Thank you for listening this season.

In this episode, I take a deeper look at breathing and relaxation in preparation for labour — going beyond the simple advice to “just breathe” or “try to relax.” These are not magic fixes, but skills that reflect how your nervous system responds to stress, intensity, and the sensations of labour.
I talk about how the modern world keeps our bodies in a constant state of alert. Our bodies are always scanning for threat, and for many of us, a slight state of tension has become normal. This affects how we experience birth, because labour is a deeply mammalian process that relies on the body feeling safe, supported, and able to drop into an instinctive state.
I explain the difference between physiological pain, which is expected and manageable, and pathological pain, which indicates that something in the body or the baby’s position is creating extra intensity. The baby is navigating your body’s infrastructure — the uterus, musculoskeletal system, fascia, emotional state, and even placental position — and sometimes that can lead to sensations that cannot be handled by breathing alone. I also explore how the mind interacts with the body during labour.
By the end of this episode, you’ll understand that breathing and relaxation are part of a bigger picture — a skill set that develops over time, incorporating your body, mind, and nervous system — giving you confidence and practical tools to navigate labour more effectively.

Why do so many women leave their birth experience wondering, “Why did I agree to that?”
In this episode, we explore a rarely discussed but deeply important aspect of childbirth — the body’s survival response, and how it can shape decision-making in labour in ways we don’t always recognise at the time.
Through a powerful listener story, this conversation gently unpacks what can happen when a woman is in a highly vulnerable, hormonally driven state, and how her nervous system may respond to pressure, authority, or perceived threat. We explore the concept of fawning — a natural, biological response where the body seeks safety through compliance — and how this can lead to saying “yes” in moments where there may not have felt like a real choice.
We then move into cognitive dissonance, the psychological process that often follows birth, where the brain works to make sense of decisions that may not have felt fully aligned in the moment. This can leave women feeling confused, questioning themselves, or quietly unsettled — even when everything appeared to go “well” on the surface.
This episode is not about blame or criticism. It’s about understanding.
Understanding the nervous system.
Understanding the power dynamics within maternity care.
And understanding how true, informed consent relies on more than just the presence of a “yes.”We also explore what this means in the context of autonomy and consent, and why awareness of these responses before birth can be so powerful. When women understand how their body and brain may respond under pressure, they can begin to prepare — not to control birth, but to stay more connected to themselves within it.
If you have ever felt unsure about decisions made during your birth, or if you’re preparing for birth and want a deeper understanding of how to protect your space, your voice, and your autonomy, this episode will offer a new lens — one rooted in compassion, not judgement.
Because this isn’t about getting it “right.”
It’s about understanding what’s happening — and giving yourself the support and awareness to stay connected to your choices, even in the most intense moments.Send me a message

I’m taking a little break over the Easter holidays, but I didn’t want you to miss this episode, because it’s the final one in our postpartum series, part of this season on The Reality of Birth.
Across this series, we’ve explored what life is really like after birth—the joys, the challenges, the surprises, and all the moments in between. We’ve talked about sleep, emotional shifts, body changes, identity, and the real realities of those first few weeks with a newborn.
For this final episode, I’m revisiting a conversation I had with fellow doula Maddie McMahon, all about breastfeeding—one of the most rewarding, yet often misunderstood, parts of postpartum life. We get into the practical challenges, the emotional highs and lows, and what it really takes to navigate feeding in those early weeks.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy this important discussion while I recharge over the holidays. 💛

Motherhood is more than a role—it’s a profound transformation. In this episode, I explore matrescence, the process of becoming a mother, and what it really means for your body, your relationships, and your sense of self.
I talk openly about reconnecting with your postpartum body, navigating intimacy and sex after birth, and adjusting to the new dynamics in your relationship. I share reflections on shifting priorities, managing guilt when taking time for yourself, and learning to let go of control while trusting others with your baby. I also explore the delicate and personal decisions around having another child, including balancing fear and desire and honouring your own readiness.
This episode is honest, grounded, and compassionate. It’s a reminder that motherhood isn’t about getting it right—it’s about understanding the changes you’re going through, moving through them with awareness, and integrating them into your new life. I also discuss what to do if you’re struggling and why asking for support is a sign of strength, not failure.
By the end of this episode, I hope you feel seen, validated, and reminded that you’re not just learning how to care for a baby—you’re learning how to live as a mother.

Bringing a new baby into your family is often described as a joyful and exciting time — but the reality is far more complex.
In this episode, I share an honest, real-world look at what it’s like to welcome a newborn into your home and your family, whether this is your first baby or you already have children.
We explore the emotional, physical, and practical realities of the early weeks — from sleep deprivation and feeding challenges to the intense sense of responsibility and constant worry that many parents experience.
I also share the importance of managing expectations — including why I often say that babies are boring — and how understanding the reality of newborn life can make the transition feel more manageable.
For those with older children, this episode is packed with practical strategies to help them feel secure, included, and valued, rather than pushed aside during this big change.
We also look at how to involve family members and visitors in a way that supports your older child, protects your space, and creates a calmer environment in those early weeks.
This episode is full of practical tips, real-world examples, and simple strategies you can implement immediately to make the arrival of a new baby a positive experience for everyone.

Since last week’s episode was released, I’ve received so many messages from listeners asking for more information about the fourth trimester and postpartum planning that I decided to record this extra episode to explore these topics in more depth.
The weeks after birth are often overlooked in birth preparation, yet they represent one of the most significant transitions for both mother and baby. In this episode, I talk about the biological realities of the fourth trimester, why newborn behaviour often makes perfect sense when we understand human development, and why planning for postpartum can make such a difference to recovery and wellbeing.
I also explore how cultural expectations in modern Western society can sometimes clash with biology, particularly when it comes to rest, recovery, and the close contact that newborn babies instinctively seek.
During the episode, I walk through a practical framework for a postpartum planning conversation. If you are preparing for birth, this is something I encourage you to discuss with your partner or support network before the baby arrives. Taking time to think about support, rest, feeding, emotional wellbeing, and household responsibilities can help protect the early weeks and reduce unnecessary stress.
I also explain why postpartum rest is not simply a luxury, but an important part of physical recovery. Giving the body time to heal after pregnancy and birth supports long-term health, including pelvic floor recovery and overall wellbeing.
The fourth trimester matters. When we understand the biology behind newborn behaviour and maternal recovery, we can approach this period with more realistic expectations and greater compassion for ourselves and our babies.

In this episode, I’m joined by specialist postpartum midwife Lara for a thoughtful and honest conversation about what really happens after birth.
Recorded last summer, this discussion explores the often-overlooked realities of the postpartum period — not just physically, but emotionally, relationally and hormonally.
Together, we unpack:
Why the fourth trimester deserves as much preparation as labour itselfThe importance of debriefing your birth experienceThe embodied transition women move through after birthThe evolving role of the birth partner once the baby has arrivedWhy personalised, relational postpartum care mattersHow intentional postpartum planning can reduce tension and misunderstandingUnderstanding Matrescence — the developmental transition into motherhood.Postpartum Planning is something I teach extensively and have dedicated the final chapter to in my book:

Preparing for birth is only half the story. What happens in the weeks after your baby arrives can be just as challenging — and often more overwhelming than labour itself. That’s why I teach the Relationship Circle in my antenatal classes, a practical way to map your support network, set boundaries, and clarify who does what.
At the heart of the circle is Mother + Partner + Baby, because postpartum is a shared journey. Around that centre, the circles show both parents’ families and friends, making it easy to see who will help, who needs boundaries, and where conversations are essential.
In this episode, we talk about mapping your network, having important discussions during pregnancy about visits, practical help, and boundaries, and navigating common challenges — like the now very common “no kissing the baby” rule. Planning this way helps reduce overwhelm, prevent conflict, and protect your recovery, so you can focus on what matters most: your new family.

Last week I talked about hypervigilance — what happens when a woman’s nervous system doesn’t feel safe in pregnancy, birth or postpartum.
This week, I explore one of the most evidence-based ways to reduce it: continuity of carer.
Continuity is not just about seeing the same service. It’s about being known. It’s about relationship. And decades of research show that when women receive continuity of midwifery care, outcomes improve across the board — including lower rates of preterm birth, fewer interventions, and better mental health outcomes.
But this conversation goes beyond statistics.
I look at why birth is relational and hormonal, why oxytocin depends on safety, and how familiarity in the room — whether from a midwife, a prepared partner, or a doula — can change the entire physiological landscape of labour.
I also ask the uncomfortable question: if continuity is so well evidenced, why is it still treated as optional?
Because safety in birth is often framed as machines and monitoring.
Yet the evidence is clear.
Safety is relationship.
Safety is familiarity.
Safety is being known. And continuity changes everything.

Hyper-vigilance is common in pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period — but rarely named. In this episode, we explore what hyper-vigilance really is, why so many women experience it, and how it impacts mothers, partners, and babies.
We talk about nervous system safety, surveillance culture in maternity care, why reassurance often doesn’t help, and what truly supports healing — without pathologising women or telling them to 'just relax'.
This episode is for:

This episode is a little different!
I decided to answer a batch of listener questions that were shorter than the single-question episodes, and they fit perfectly with what’s coming up in the coming weeks.
As I went through them, I noticed quite a few shared a common theme, and it reminded me just how important it is to dedicate some episodes specifically to postpartum experiences, because there is so much to unpack in those first days, weeks and months.
I hope you enjoy this Q&A — it’s honest, practical, and grounded in real experiences from real listeners.

In this episode, I’m joined by Fenja, who shares her freebirth story with honesty, depth, and clarity.
At a time when freebirth is being widely discussed — and often misunderstood — Fenja’s experience offers a grounded and much-needed perspective on what informed, conscious birth preparation can look like.
Fenja speaks openly about the extensive work she did during pregnancy: building physiological understanding, engaging in emotional and mental preparation, and developing a deep trust in her body and decision-making. Her choices were not made lightly. They were rooted in knowledge, reflection, and personal responsibility.
During her pregnancy, Fenja chose to hire a doula — not as someone to direct her birth, but as optional, woman-led support. When labour unfolded, she recognised that what she needed most was solitude and privacy, and she chose not to call her doula to the birth. This decision was hers alone, made in the moment, based on what felt right in her body and nervous system.
With recent media coverage and coroner’s reports attempting to suggest that doulas are influencing women to make unsafe decisions, Fenja’s story provides an important counterpoint. It clearly demonstrates that women are capable of making informed, autonomous decisions about their own births, and that doulas do not make decisions for women — they support them, when and if that support is wanted.
This episode is not about persuading anyone to freebirth.
It is about respecting women’s capacity to prepare deeply, think critically, and choose consciously.Fenja’s story is thoughtful, grounded, and a deep reminder that birth choices cannot be reduced to headlines or assumptions.

In this episode, I am exploring the hidden and often overlooked phenomenon of self-gaslighting—when women dismiss their own instincts, feelings, or inner knowing. So much of birth preparation focuses on what to do — how to breathe, how to move, how to plan.
But none of that works if a woman doesn’t trust herself.
In this episode, I’m sharing my Ten Commandments of Birth and explaining why I believe inner work is the missing piece in so much birth preparation. I talk honestly about what I’ve seen shift in women since creating Discover Your North Star, and why no breathing technique can undo years of self-doubt.
This episode is about preparation that goes deeper than checklists and protocols — preparation that changes how a woman meets her birth, whatever path it takes.

I’ve created this as a reflective, practical guide to support the inner work I talk about in this episode. It also includes a version for your birth partner.

In this final episode of the year, I’m talking about something I see all the time in my work — but something women rarely feel able to admit out loud: that the desperate longing for a baby doesn’t always match how they feel once they are actually here.
After more than two decades supporting women through pregnancy, birth, and those early vulnerable weeks, I’ve heard this story in so many different forms. Today, I’m sharing the experience of a mum I met at a recent coffee morning — Emma — who gave me permission to talk about her journey.
Emma had two miscarriages before this pregnancy. She spent months just trying to get to the birth, believing that once her baby was safely here, everything would fall into place. But her birth ended up being long, heavily managed, and exhausting, leaving her feeling out of control. She also struggled with the after-effects of the pain relief she received. And when she finally held her baby, she didn’t feel the rush of emotion she’d imagined.
Her question to me — quiet, honest, and full of guilt — forms the heart of this episode.
Together, we unpack why so many women feel this way, why these feelings don’t mean anything is wrong, and how the emotional transition into motherhood is far more complex than most people prepare you for.

In this episode, we dive deep into communication in the birth room — going beyond the widely taught BRAIN acronym. While BRAIN (Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, Nothing) can be a helpful tool, waiting until labour to rely on it often means you’ve already been pulled into reactive decision-making. We discuss how true advocacy, sovereignty, and physiological birth are protected long before labour begins, through preparation, clear values, and embodied support.
What You’ll Learn in This Episode:
Why relying on BRAIN mid-labour can disrupt physiological birth. The limitations of checklists and reactive decision-making.How to prepare proactively with your partner to communicate effectively. The importance of embodied presence, clarity, and boundaries in the birth room.Practical ways your partner can advocate and protect your space and flow. How to anchor decisions in intuition and values rather than fear or pressure.Action Steps for Listeners:
Create your own Birth Manifesto, tailored to your values and needs.Practice clear, confident language with your partner for common birth scenarios.Focus on presence, breath, and embodied trust to support physiological birth.Prepare together for advocacy — your partner is your voice and protector when you need it most.Resources:
Discover Your North Star course for deeper preparation and tools for both you and your partner.Key Takeaway:
True communication and advocacy in the birth room happen before labour, rooted in preparation, clarity, and trust in yourself. BRAIN can be a tool, but your sovereignty, instincts, and presence are far more powerful.Send me a message

In this episode, I sit down with my friend and fellow birth worker Jen Culley to talk about the reality that early labour is often overlooked in modern birth preparation.
We explore how early labour is represented on social media and how these portrayals can unintentionally shape women’s expectations in unhelpful ways. While short clips and reels can beautifully capture the moment a baby is born, they rarely show the quiet, powerful, and often lengthy process that leads up to it. Early labour can take hours — sometimes days — and it’s during this time that your mindset, support, and environment matter most.
Jen and I reflect on how, in the past, women would have grown up seeing birth unfold — as daughters, sisters, or friends. That shared experience built instinctive knowledge and trust in the body’s rhythms. Today, many of us enter labour without ever having witnessed it, and that loss of communal wisdom can make early labour feel confusing or even frightening.
We talk about how this lack of understanding can impact the rest of the birth, and why the way early labour begins often sets the tone for how the rest of labour unfolds.
We also discuss what early labour support looks like today, especially the variation in NHS care, where women are often left to navigate this phase alone. Jen and I highlight how the presence of a doula can transform this stage — offering reassurance, practical guidance, and emotional steadiness when it’s needed most.
And finally, we dive deeply into the partner’s pivotal role — how they can support progress, protect space, and bring a sense of calm and safety that allows oxytocin to flow and labour to build naturally.
If you’ve ever wondered how to make early labour work for you, not against you — or if you simply want to understand this phase in a deeper, more realistic way — this episode is for you.

In this episode, I explore one of the most delicate and important questions in birth work: Is my lived experience more important than your future one?
So many women feel torn between wanting to share their birth story — whether it was empowering, challenging, or deeply traumatic — and wanting to protect others from fear or unrealistic expectations. But how do we find the balance? How do we share truthfully without limiting what’s possible for someone else?
This conversation unpacks the tension between past experience and future potential. Together, we look at how to reflect on your own birth, what to learn from it, and how to share your story responsibly — so that both honesty and hope can exist side by side.
Key Takeaways:
Your lived experience matters deeply — but it’s not a template for anyone else’s.Sharing your story can help others, but only when it’s framed with context and possibility.Negative stories can warn, but they shouldn’t define someone else’s limits.Positive stories bring hope, balance, and proof of what’s possible.Reflection is powerful: understanding your own birth can help you prepare differently next time.Protecting someone’s dream of a physiological birth doesn’t mean sugar-coating reality — it means giving space for hope and autonomy.Send me a message

In this episode, I talk about one of the most emotionally testing times in pregnancy — the waiting game.
When your due date is approaching, or has come and gone, it can feel as though the world is on pause while everyone keeps asking, 'Have you had the baby yet?'
I explore what this waiting period can really feel like — the impatience, the frustration, and the mental tug of war that happens when your baby still isn’t ready to arrive.
I also talk about the pressure that can build when conversations about induction of labour start, and how those offers can influence how you feel about your body, your baby, and the timing of birth.
We chat about the idea that 42 weeks is often considered the outer limit of pregnancy — but how that’s not true for everyone. For many women, birth can unfold safely and beautifully beyond that point. Still, talking about 42 weeks helps shift the focus away from the growing trend of early induction at 39 weeks, which can interrupt the natural rhythm of both mother and baby.
I also share some of the incredible support available during this time from myself, Shellie Poulter, and Kemi Johnson, who all offer services to help women navigate these later stages of pregnancy with confidence and calm. I’ll include their links below.
If you’re currently waiting — or supporting someone who is — this episode will help you find reassurance, perspective, and patience in those final days. Your baby will come, and how you navigate this time matters just as much as the birth itself.
