  • You could say Nolan Smith was born for basketball. The son of Derek Smith, Nolan grew up around the NBA, and the game was a family thing. As a young player he was a phenom coming up in the DMV. A turning point moment upon losing his father, Nolan found a deeper purpose in his play. Landing at Duke, he was not only a standout player for Coach K, but a leader and a champion.

With an NBA career that was cut short, Nolan found a natural calling as a coach. Instead of Durham, he’s now in Memphis, part of a program where he’s a key figure in building a winning culture and developing well rounded players. As Penny knew Nolan’s story, he saw the promise in him not only as a coach, but as motivator and as a man.

The world of basketball can really come full circle when you grow up a fan of a player, work on your game watching them and pursuing your dream of making the NBA. Then if you can someday play against them or even with them that’s even more special. That’s exactly what happened for Jamal Crawford when made it to team up with Penny.

A standout player, who was a gym rat, a true student of the game and phenom coming out of Seattle, Jamal had one of the deepest bags the game has ever seen. When you get to know his love and dedication, it all makes sense. For Penny, he was a fan of Jamal (aka Dandy), watching him come up, with the style and joy with which he played the game. Beyond that, the two bonded and became friends thanks to their love of the game and mutual appreciation for each other.

  • When it comes to playing point forward, Antoine Walker can be listed among players who were the prototype for the position. Coming up in the rich history of Chicago players, he developed his signature style that blended size, shooting, ball handling and finishing. At Kentucky, Antoine was the top player on a historically great national championship squad.
When Penny came across Antoine as a pro, he saw a savvy player who would take the league by force. From their days running at Hoops in Chicago in legendary summer runs, to showdowns in Boston and later meeting up in Miami, it was mutual love and respect. Looking back on Antoine’s career we not only think of him as dynamically talented, but a winner and the blueprint for the modern era game.

If you know Penny’s basketball career and life, there is no player who followed on a similar path than Elliot Perry. A few years ahead of him, Elliot was a standout player who became a star in Memphis and then an 11 year pro. He and Penny attended the same high school at Treadwell, and then Memphis State and onto the league. For all of its rich basketball culture you can’t talk about Memphis without Elliot and Penny.
As the story continues, they both have come full circle in their respective journeys and are back in Memphis writing the next chapter. Elliot aka “Socks” had the rare opportunity to play for his hometown team, and when he hung them up, he stayed working for the Grizzlies as the Director of Player Support. His mission now…build in the community, and pour into the next generation.

When it comes to being a point guard from LA you have to style, skill and plenty of poise, know the game and love the game. Baron Davis is the embodiment of an LA PG. Coming out of South Central, BD came up in an era nurtured by Showtime and surrounded by NBA players that either spent time or moved to the west coast. Staying home at UCLA for college his game blossomed and he was ready to put on for LA when he got to the league.
As Penny remembers, Baron was confident teenager that used to show up to their summer runs to hoop with the pros. Then as Baron game matched his personality and style, he was a star in the making. Now the two look at the substance of BD’s career and point guards need to be molded and developed in a certain way.

Brevin Knight came up in an era of highly dynamic, creative and explosive point guards out of New York. For a kid from New Jersey that ended up at Stanford, Brevin used his high IQ, ability to see angles and anticipation to make it despite his lack of size.
In 12 NBA seasons, BK established himself as a player who could both run an offense, wreak havoc on defense and lead a team. Now he’s the voice of the Memphis Grizzlies and has a front row seat to Ja Morant’s showstopping abilities and this new era point guards. As Brevin tells Penny, point guard play is at an all-time high and there is a lot to like when studying the game right now.

What Draymond Green brings every night – that intensity and desire – to bring that every night is nothing short of remarkable. And looking at his resume, at this point in his career with more left in the tank, is also flat out remarkable. Still as a 4-time champion, 2-time gold medalist, Defensive Player of the Year, 4 time All-Star and so on, we still need to appreciate the IQ, the leadership and the fire that is Draymond.
As Penny points out, Draymond is one of one, and now a blueprint for players to pattern their games after. For a guy that is willing to do the dirty work, that is willing to sacrifice and do what it takes to win, what coach wouldn’t want a guy like that on his team. For Draymond, there’s been a lot of growth and evolution not only in his game but as a person, and as he tells us at this point in his career he has a renewed desire.

This one’s for the glue guys. When it comes to NBA careers, James Posey won 2 championships in 12 seasons and was an integral part of team cultures in Miami, Boston and Cleveland respectively (as well as Denver, Memphis, Houston, New Orleans and Indiana). Simply put, he understood how to adapt, had the character and maturity to star in his role.
As Penny knows it is all about the perception and perspective for players. When it comes to Pose’s unique attributes you have to track his journey. A solid player he had to grind in college and thanks to a great work ethic made it to the league. Then with the support of good vets, learned not only what it would take to make it but to stay. Beyond that he figured out what it takes to win. Add that all up and you have an outstanding NBA resume and one hell of a career.

As most of us know, playing the point guard position is an art form. As the game has evolved so has the role. Of the PG’s of his era, Nick Van Exel was as tough as they come. High IQ, could run his offense, pick his spots and was a flat out tough cover. Both coming out of the 1993 draft class, he and Penny brought the positon forward in their time.
Sitting down not only to look back but to look forward on how both the position and the game are trending, they share a common point of view. For Penny and Nick they see so much promise in today’s players. As we find out, they tip their hats to the amount of talent, unique abilities and skill that is played by the point guards of this generation. But of course they could also get buckets in today’s game (or any era for that matter).

When it comes to work ethic, few players were driven quite like Corey Maggette. Corey built his game around his athleticism and to ensure longevity he went all in on his fitness. In applying it on the basketball court his workouts were at one speed and one speed only…game speed.
As he tells Penny, that desire to push himself and to dedicate himself to the game started with the influences in his family. His drive enabled Corey to become a standout at Duke and a cornerstone player in the league for 14 NBA seasons. Now he still prides himself on his fitness and keeping basketball a cornerstone in his life.

Every now and then a certain kind of player comes along that is the perfect blend of athleticism, ability and IQ. Someone who handles their business both on and off the court. Someone who is a winner, a professional and an overachiever. For the length of his career, Andre Iguodala was all of the above. A four-time champion and Finals MVP, along with All-Star and now president of the Players Association, Andre has continuously re-invented himself on his basketball journey.
As we find out, Andre’s endless need to learn, understand the league and the game within the game, enabled him to find a solid place in the NBA. As Penny finds out, once the light bulb went off for Iggy, he was able to play the game at the highest level. From there playing with all-time great teammates and establishing a championship standard fell into place.

You know him now for All the Smoke and his activism, but don’t forget Stephen Jackson was a high IQ, championship winning player. Looking back on his career, Stak Jack can be best identified as an all-time great teammate, a knock down shooter, a playmaker and an unselfish player. What you might not know was Stephen’s journey took him from Oak Hill Academy to Australia, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic before he settled in for 14 NBA seasons.
Always an admirer of not only his play but his evolution as a player, Penny gets to the heart of what made Stephen a pro’s pro. And it was exactly that…his heart. Once he matured, Stak blossomed in the league. Of course having a Coach Poppovich to mentor you always helps. But Stephen took the opportunity and ran with it. Now looking back at it, it was a hell of an accomplishment and a hell of a ride.

After 17 seasons, Rudy Gay has called it a career. Looking back, we can say Rudy was the prototype for today’s wing player. His length, ability to shoot, get to the rim, defend and create was ahead of his time for his era. Coming out of Baltimore, Rudy arrived at UConn where he sharpened his game before going pro. In his 17 NBA seasons, Rudy was a walking highlight who was a star in Memphis and went on to standout years in Toronto, Sacramento, San Antonio before closing things out in Utah.
In retirement, Rudy and Penny discuss the details of being a pro. As he can appreciate it now, Rudy speaks to his dedication, what the game did for his life and what he wished he knew then what he knows now. Overall, it was a hell of a run for Rudy Gay and he was truly fun to watch.

Some know him as the Grindfather, some know him as Tony Allen, but what most people don’t know is TA’s journey to becoming one of the best lock down defenders the game has ever seen. As Penny finds out Tony came up the hard way in Chicago, which explains the tenacity and grit he played with.
With those intangibles in place Tony’s identity was cemented thanks to his time in Boston with Celtics Big Three and a championship to show for it. Then when he went to Memphis the rest would be history for Tony. There would be no Grit and Grind without Tony Allen and we are all better off for witnessing those epic offense vs defense battles with Kobe, LeBron, DWade and others.

When it comes to Memphis basketball, the Grit and Grind era to be specific, Zach Randolph is one of the pillars of the movement. It was Z-Bo’s blend of IQ, fundamentals, aggression and toughness that tied him to the Grizzlies franchise. What we know of him as a player started in Marion, Indiana, was molded at Michigan State and blossomed in his 17 NBA seasons.
As we find out in his time with Z-Bo, Penny gets down to the mentality and purpose with which he played. From the adjustments he made to make it as a player, to his commitment to himself and his team, Z-Bo explains who credits and how he built is legacy as a pro. And beyond his playing career, how Z-Bo the girldad is now watching his twin on the court, his daughter Mackenly get started at Louisville.

  • As we watch the game we get used to a style of play and a style of player, and then that generational player comes along and changes everything. Tracy McGrady was exactly that. A combination of athleticism, skill, creativity and competitiveness, there was no one like TMac on the basketball court.
A generational player himself, Penny and TMac reflect each other right down to the number on the jersey. As TMac tells Penny, he was the player we watched and studied coming up. On Penny’s end, it’s all love and respect for TMac’s game. The two share thoughts on having the mentality to take over games, which as we find out, comes from unseen work and dedication.
Now they’re both at a point of perspective, with eyes on the next generational players they see themselves in. And as we find out, watching for the guys that live and breathe it, while looking to push the game forward.

  • Kam McGusty’s journey so far has been one of patience and consistency. As he’s progressed, he’s added detail and continued to produce. Coming up in Texas, his game turned heads and he wound up at Oklahoma. Earning honorable mention All-Big 12 and Newcomer teams, he sought to expand his opportunities and responsibilities. Two seasons, including All-ACC first time honors this year at the University of Miami, Kam displayed his high level athleticism, competitiveness and shot creation.
Down in Memphis working with eyes on the pro level, Penny has seen what Kam has in the tool box. He’s got the talent and the desire for sure. Now is the crucial time to maximize training time, and locking in on strengths. What Kam has developed hasn’t happened overnight, but his ability translates to success beyond what he’s shown up to now. Next up is another stage.

  • The time in between the season and the draft (or before moving up at any level) is some of the most valuable in a hooper’s lifespan. Putting in time to work on details, improving weakness and adding polish pays off. That’s a fact. For Iverson Molinar, he’s catapulted off of a strong 3 years at Mississippi State to making some noise onto draft boards. Originally from Panama, Iverson fills out the resume as a lighting fast, 3 level scorer, who can run an offense and ignite a lineup.
Beyond his namesake (yup AI himself), Penny sees a hard nosed player who blends athleticism, skill and IQ. The triple threat. Iverson’s best attribute – which is the ultimate for any hooper – is to adjust his game based on his roster and role. As a pro, that matters most as you work to establish yourself at the highest level. While he’s definitely not an overnight success, Iverson’s been hiding in plain sight, and for us basketball lovers, we’re about to discover a good one real soon…

  • As the game is constantly changing, the value of player development is at an all-time high. Mike Foster chose the somewhat new and uncharted route on his path to the NBA. Now after a season with the G-League Ignite, Mike went from Hillcrest Prep right to the pro development ranks.
His size and skill made him a player that was set to excel ahead of his years, but what he’s done with his ability is continuing to build. After his season ended, Mike headed to Memphis to work with Penny before the draft. For Penny, Mike’s versatility will be his greatest attribute. At first glance, Mike is a well-skilled big, but with a closer look (and some polish from Penny), what we see are things you’d expect out of 2’s and 3’s.
With what he learned after a season in the G under his belt, Penny wanted to see just what Mike had within him as a competitor. After a week in Memphis, he sees just what the future holds for Mike Foster. And it’s a bright one.

  • An unsung quality for a hooper (and any athlete for that matter) is the quality of being known as a gamer. No matter what the situation, no matter what distractions may arise, guys who lock in when it’s game time find the way.
A product of Chicago’s basketball legacy – Quentin Richardson was just that. A hard nosed bucket getter who could knock down shots and flat out ball. He made a way for himself in the league into what became the modern era as we know it.
As a gym rat, QRich possessed the makeup where skill backed up his Chicago grit. Beyond some time together in New York, Penny connects to Quentin not only via his era, but the basketball city that is Orlando. With a respect for the contributions of different eras, Q has established himself as a voice in the game, calling Magic games and with his Knucklehead running mate, Darius Miles. His perspective on the game now and where it came provides food for thought that all hoop fans can respect and appreciate.
