Julie Stevens grew up in Southern California and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area at 13 to live with her two moms during a time of profound social change, marked by the Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, and LGBTQ movements. Amidst this vibrant atmosphere, Julie struggled with her identity and turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with early family turbulence. However, her community, including her moms, grandmother, and mentors, played a crucial role in helping her find confidence and purpose.
Her mother’s advice, “If this isn’t working for you, then create your own reality,” inspired Julie to build a community centered on equity, diversity, and inclusion.
With a background in hospitality and entrepreneurship, Julie studied various healing modalities, realizing that sharing these gifts was part of her mission. In 2015, she founded The Urban Retreat Center (URC) to offer a space where ancient earth-based practices are accessible to those seeking healing and connection. The URC embodies her vision, providing a sanctuary where diversity, equity, inclusion, and community thrive alongside events, rituals, and retreats.
By hosting teachers from diverse traditions, the URC continues to be a beacon of light, knowledge, and healing for all who seek personal growth and transformation.

This is the first in our Guest Host Series where I hand over the mic to a selection of folks I’ve interviewed over the years, and whose work I value and find inspiring. My hope with this series is that I’ll be able to provide a greater and wider array of incredible information and content for my listeners.
I invited John Clarke on because I value his genuineness, curiosity and openness with which he shares his personal process. John is a licensed trauma therapist, trainer, group practice owner, and host of the podcast Going Inside: Healing Trauma from the Inside Out.
In this interview, John talks to Bob Falconer. Bob recently published his new book about IFS and unattached burdens – The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind, and Spirit Possession. For the past decade or more, Bob Falconer has devoted himself full-time to IFS work (Internal Family Systems Therapy).

This is rebroadcasting of an episode with Juditta Ben-David.
This is what it’s about--passion, heart and helping others. And today, my guest exudes all of those elements. Today, I’m speaking with Juditta Ben-David, SEP M.A., founder of The Mindfulness in Arabic project (MiA).
MiA has built a website that offers an eight-week Mindfulness course in Arabic, designed for refugees and people in transition. Any person with internet access may enter the website, free of charge, anywhere around the world. The course provides practical tools and exercises tailored specifically to support a shaken population that suffered traumas of fear, death and extreme violence. Juditta’s website also provides tools for therapists, social workers, welfare workers, and volunteers who are currently working with refugee populations, so that they may use mindfulness-based tools for their own needs in coping with work stress and related DP camp difficult experiences, as well as passing them on to their clients.
MiA developed out of the work of our founder, Juditta Ben-David, SEP M.A, in refugee camps in Turkey. Working there with refugees and their supporters/counselors and social-workers the request for additional tools led to a crowdfunding campaign raising one-half of the funds needed to launch our 8-week course. MiA is thankful to be supported by leading Mindfulness instructors like Jon Kabat Zinn, Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, Christopher Titmuss and Patricia Genoud-Feldman as well as Mindfulness providers like Headspace and Mindful Magazine.
