  • November 6, 2021. Orlando, Florida. 22-year old Bryan “Vladek” Hasel shows up at a coffee shop he often frequents, but after police are called and Vladek is issued a trespass warning for a prior incident with a pocket knife, he walks off and vanishes without a trace. Nine days later, Vladek’s father returns from a family trip and discovers that his son is missing and has left most of his personal belongings behind in their apartment. There is speculation that Vladek may have suffered some sort of a mental health crisis and disappeared voluntarily, but no trace of him can be found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we are covering the unsolved disappearance of Bryan “Vladek” Hasel at the direct request of his family, who are doing whatever they can to spread awareness about his story and are hoping he is still alive somewhere and can be found safely.

If you have any information about Vladek’s disappearance, please contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Office at (407) 254-7000. His case number is 21-83864. • April 26, 2000. Reno, Nevada. 25-year old Star Palumbo is found wandering around through a restricted area at Reno-Tahoe International Airport and tells security that she is looking for her sister, even though she does not have one. An officer drives Star to the nearby Hilton Hotel and Casino and drops her off, but she soon vanishes without trace and her abandoned car is discovered at the airport one day later. Since Star had been displaying erratic and paranoid behaviour prior to her disappearance, investigators explore the possibility that she was on drugs or suffered some sort of mental breakdown, but even though there are a number of unconfirmed rumours about what might have happened to Star, no trace of her is ever found.

October 28, 1991. San Francisco, California. After last being seen at a hospital, 29-year old Selena Edon inexplicably disappears and breaks off all contact with her loved ones. She eventually tells her family and friends that she is leaving town with an unidentified woman, but no one can confirm if this woman even exists and Selena is never heard from again.

On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover a pair of missing persons cases that were featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” and involve young women who disappeared without leaving any evidence behind.

If you have any information about the disappearance of Star Palumbo, please contact the Reno Police Department at (775) 334-2155. If you have any information about the disappearance of Selena Edon, please contact the San Francisco Police Department at (415) 553-0123.

  • October 26, 2015. Calgary, Alberta. Lee Antoni, the husband of 31-year old Amanda Antoni, returns home, from a weekend trip and discovers Amanda’s body lying in a pool of blood inside their basement. Two days earlier, a phone call between Amanda and Lee had abruptly cut off and since her broken cell phone is found on the floor, police initially believe that Amanda was attacked and her death was a homicide. However, after failing to turn up any strong suspects or forensic evidence pointing towards an outside party, investigators start to consider the possibility that Amanda actually suffered an accidental fatal fall down the stairs. Was Amanda Antoni the victim of foul play or was her death nothing more than a tragic accident? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a Canadian case that was recently featured on the “Unsolved Mysteries” reboot.

If you have any information about this case, please contact the Calgary Police Service at (403) 266-1234 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)

  • July 14, 1994. Rochester, Pennsylvania. After leaving her home, 14-year old Sarah Boehm goes missing and a cryptic letter is soon found inside her bedroom. Even though Sarah supposedly wrote about being in a relationship with an abusive man and expressed a desire to run away, the authorities question the legitimacy of the letter and wonder if it may have been intended to mislead the investigation. Over three months later, a murdered Jane Doe is found 50 miles away in the Berlin Lake Wildlife Area in Ohio and in 2003, the victim is positively identified as Sarah. It turns out that the body of another murdered girl, 17-year old Kathryn Menendez, was found in the same wildlife area one month after Sarah originally went missing. Even though Kathryn lived only a few miles away and there is no apparent connection between the two victims, investigators explore the possibility that they were both killed by the same perpetrator. This week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” covers the murders of two teenage girls which have gone unsolved for 30 years and we will also briefly discuss the murder of 16-year old Anna Marie Callahan, which took place in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania in October 1995. Special thanks to listener Maria Milchman for narrating the opening of this episode.

If you have information about the murder of Sarah Boehm, please contact the Beaver County District Attorney’s Office at (724) 773-8550. If you have any information about the murder of Kathryn Menendez, please contact the Portage County Sheriff’s Office at (330) 296-8626. You can also call the FBI tip line for both those cases at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324). Police begin to suspect Fred Leininger, a local veterinarian whom Linda had recently started working for and was rumoured to be having an affair with, but there is not enough evidence to implicate him and no one is ever charged with the crime. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the disturbing story of the Bricca Family Murders, which has remained unsolved for nearly 60 years.

  • January 7, 1990. Daviess County, Kentucky. The nude body of a white male who appears to be in his thirties is found in a remote wooded area. The victim has been shot and severely beaten and his hands and feet were removed, but since he cannot be identified, he becomes known as the “Daviess County John Doe”. Seventeen years later, investigators announce that the victim has been identified as Scott Morris, a 14-year old boy who went missing from Indianapolis, Indiana in 1978, but this turns out to be mistake, as DNA testing later shows that the decedent has no genetic connection to Scott’s family. Finally, in April 2024, the Daviess County John Doe is correctly identified as William Mathews, a former Louisville resident who was 37 years old at the time of his death, but his murder remains unsolved. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two separate unsolved cold cases which wound up being linked together in a very unlikely fashion.

However, it eventually comes out that Riza is already married and his 45-year old wife, Winsome Angela Perez, has also gone missing. • July 10, 1999. Pierrefonds, Quebec. 42-year old Janet Kuchinsky leaves her residence in order to go out for a walk, but never returns. The following morning, Janet’s body is found in a wooded area next to a bicycle path located one kilometre from her home and she has been bludgeoned to death by a blunt instrument. Months later, a serial killer named William Patrick Fyfe is charged with the murders of a number of other women which also happened to occur in the West Island region of Montreal during this time period, but no evidence links him to Janet’s death and the crime is never solved.

April 29, 1996. Senneville, Quebec. 51-year old Andre Lalonde, a veteran constable with the Montreal Urban Community Police, pulls over a Ford Tempo with a noisy muffler for a seemingly routine traffic stop before he is fatally shot by the driver. It turns out the vehicle was stolen and it is later found abandoned in an industrial section of Montreal after having been set on fire. There is speculation that in the weeks prior to Lalonde’s murder, the Tempo may have been used during a series of bank robberies, but while investigators believe they have a potential suspect in the shooting, they lack the evidence to file charges.

On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to our home country of Canada to explore a pair of unsolved murders which took place in the West Island of Montreal. Special thanks to listener Talia Guilbault-Miscovich for narrating the opening of this episode.

  • December 12, 1992. Charles Mix County, South Dakota. After an all-night partying spree, 20-year old Arnold Archambeau, Arnold’s 18-year old spouse, Ruby Bruguier, and Ruby’s 17-year old cousin, Tracy Dion, get into a car accident and roll over into a frozen ditch. By the time help arrives at the scene, Tracy is still trapped inside the car, but Arnold and Ruby have disappeared. Three months later, Arnold and Ruby’s bodies are found submerged in water in the ditch over 75 feet away from the accident scene and their cause of death is determined to be exposure. However, the investigation turns up some odd discrepancies to suggest that Arnold and Ruby may have still been alive during the three-month window they were missing before their bodies were brought back to the ditch and placed there by an unknown party. Did the couple actually die of exposure on the same morning of the accident or did something else happen? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a bizarre unexplained death case which was featured on “Unsolved Mysteries”.

  • June 16, 1991. Denver, Colorado. An armed gunman commits a robbery from the underground vault at the United Bank Tower on Father’s Day and makes off with $197,000 in cash. While the six employees from the vault are allowed to live, the assailant fatally shoots four guards: 41-year old Phillip Mankoff, 21-year old Todd Wilson, 33-year old William McCullom Jr. and 21-year old Scott McCarthy. Two-and-a-half weeks later, a 54-year old retired police officer named James King, who once worked as a guard at United Bank, is arrested and charged with the robbery and the murders. However, since the stolen money is never recovered and no physical evidence links King to the crime, the case against him is very circumstantial and King is acquitted of all charges at trial. Was James King actually responsible for this crime or did law enforcement allow the real perpetrator to get away with it? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a controversial unsolved bank robbery/quadruple homicide which has become known as “The Father’s Day Bank Massacre”.

  • August 23, 2009. Anadarko, Oklahoma. 61-year old pastor Carol Daniels drives from her home in Oklahoma City to the Worthy Temple Christ Holy Sanctified Church in order to perform her Sunday morning duties there, but less than two hours after her arrival, Carol is murdered. She has been stripped naked, stabbed several times, and had a dissolving chemical sprayed over her body in an apparent attempt to destroy DNA evidence, but no one can figure out the motive for this crime. Nearly eight years later, investigators announce that a deceased criminal named Denise Kay Cooper and another suspect may have been responsible for Carol’s murder, but even though evidence is presented to a grand jury, no charges are filed. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unsolved murder of Reverend Carol Daniels, one of the most shocking and brutal crimes ever featured on this podcast.

Investigators eventually come to believe that Edyth and Nicholas were the victims of foul play, but no suspects are named and the case is never solved.

  • February 22, 1996. Nashville, Tennessee. 18-year old Melissa Chilton and 18-year Tiffany Campbell show up for work at Exotic Tan for Men, a tanning salon which doubles as an adult entertainment establishment. At some point during their shift, an assailant murders the two women in the salon’s laundry room and they are stabbed a combined total of over 100 times. Seventeen years later, a suspect named Patrick Streater, who happens to be Tiffany’s former boyfriend, is charged with both murders. However, in 2018, the authorities announce that new DNA testing has significantly weakened their case against Streater, making it impossible to take him to trial, so the murder charges are dropped. Did Patrick Streater actually kill Melissa Chilton and Tiffany Campbell or was someone else responsible? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a horrific double homicide which is often referred to as the “Tanning Bed Murders”.

  • May 30, 1968. Mead, Colorado. After leaving a party being held at his fiancee’s residence, 18-year old Leroy Drieth is killed when his car crashes into a tree. Prior to the crash, Leon had reportedly made a statement that he was going to kill himself, so his death is ruled to be a suicide. Decades later, Leroy’s sister learns some incriminating information about an altercation which supposedly took place at the party between Leroy and some of Patty’s family members. After Leroy’s body is exhumed, an autopsy uncovers a pair of knife wounds on his neck and while his cause of death is officially changed from “suicide” to “undetermined”, there are still no conclusive answers about how Leroy was killed.

October 18, 1992. Fauquier County, Virginia. While horseback riding with a friend, 37-year old Shelly Malone is supposedly thrown to the ground before her horse stomps on her chest with such force that it ruptures her heart. While Shelly’s death is ruled to be an accident, her family notices suspicious behaviour from her friends, as well as alleged discrepancies in their story about how she was killed. After discovering small traces of blood inside her truck, Shelly’s family becomes convinced that she was murdered and that the so-called horseback riding accident was staged, but are unable to convince the authorities to reclassify her death.

On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a pair of suspicious unexplained deaths in which the victim’s loved ones were certain that foul play took place.

If you have any information about the death of Leroy Drieth, please contact the Weld County Sheriff’s Office at (970) 356-4015. If you have any information about the death of Shelly Malone, please contact the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office at (540) 347-3300.
