  • Alright, tech heads, here's what's buzzing this week: We're diving wrist-first into the sleek, premium vibes of the OnePlus Watch 4 Titanium, then switching gears to pure audiophile bliss with the Topping DX9 DAC to see if it really earns its bragging rights. We also explore a clever browser tool that might just expose whether you can actually hear the difference between FLAC and MP3 (brace yourself), before getting hands-on with the futuristic Turtle Beach MC7 wireless mouse, yes, it's got a touchscreen. Retro lovers, you're eating good too, as SNK teases a modern take on the NeoGeo AES, blending nostalgia with new-school convenience. And finally, we round things out with Roberts' latest portable radios, proving that classic listening still has a place in our always-online world.

Feedback on Hiding my Film/TV files from Google Photos

    Ted recipe...

Make a folder on the card, say "Video Parent". Put the .nomedia file in that folder. Make another folder off of "Video Parent" called, say "Ted's Videos". Put all the video files in there (in nested folder structure if you like), then get VLC (or other players) to reindex from that folder, not the first. So Google Photos (and the Android system) ignores "Ted's Videos" (because of the .nomedia file in that folder) and the thumbnails are not littered through the Google Photos App. And VLC (and any other Media Playing app) is happy once pointed to Ted's Videos (and sub-folders) and indexed again. The trick was nesting one folder in another and putting the .nomedia file in the first one, then flowing the nest of folders further down the tree.

  • this episode, we dive into a packed lineup! We break down Motorola's surprising alignment with GrapheneOS and what that means for privacy-focused Android users, alongside a quick explainer of the OS itself. From there, we look at VitaLink's ambitious foldable device, cramming a 13-inch screen and keyboard into a single slab at a surprisingly low Kickstarter price, and Audio-Technica's eye-watering £1,700 AT-LPA2 turntable aimed squarely at audiophiles. We also explore Waveshare's £150 handheld Linux machine that challenges the need for a traditional laptop, before shifting gears to Google's crackdown on "back button hijacking" tactics used by some websites. Finally, we unpack the controversy around claims that Microsoft and LinkedIn have been "illegally searching" users' computers, and what it could mean for trust in big tech.

Great show chaps! I picked up one of those screenless trackers from PSC Classifieds, it's an Amazfit Helio Band, initial impression is that it's pretty good. SomeGadgetGuy on RAM Crisis

For the RAM and component news, the most frustrating aspect of it is the speculation. The manufacturing and pricing IMMEDIATELY flipped based on the announcements from companies like OpenAI that they WOULD scale up. A company super deep in the red, generating no significant profits, just SAYING they were GOING to buy up 40% of the RAM decimated the entire consumer market. There should be antitrust investigations. When. It comes to mobile devices, we are seeing the first symptoms of component price hikes. Phones in 2025 we're largely similar to phones from 2024, often with a handful of downgrades to individual components to balance the costs of more expensive SOCs. This year, phones are even more similar to phones from 2025, and increasingly, we're seeing even more price cuts to pieces, like totally flat screens, or reducing the number of rear cameras, while we're still seeing price increases in a lot of regions. Im confident this trend will continue. As a fashion trend, companies will continue to push super thin phones as a way to sell an expensive device with fewer features.

    Rob DeLorean-Chamb on uTag App

I was listening to Ted on the podcast last week and heard him say he had some Samsung tags but because he hasn't got a Samsung phone he used the web interface but there is a 3rd party app that lets you natively control them as-if one's non-Samsung was actually a Samsung! UTag is an open source app too.

Gareth Williams my despair is somewhat lessened thanks to the yuletide surprise from an extra WW Pod! Guess I'll just be drowning the remainder of my sorrows with the ridiculous amounts of booze I stocked up with. Cheers to the best podcast team of them all (TA, WW, PSC, CC & PR).

Ron K Jeffries I demand a full refund! This is outrageous.

AJ Santos I showed up with snacks and everything… and the podcast ghosted me. Even my chair is disappointed.

Crucial's news about RAM for consumers

    Ed Hause
That's very sad. I always seemed to end up with Crucial RAM when upgrading. Shame.

    James Raeburn
That's terrible news. I can't believe Micron are doing this. Seems very short sighted to me. Crucial was my go-to brand for RAM.

    Jeremy Harpham
I guess the shift to motherboard-soldered RAM limits the number of newer laptops with any upgrade options.

    Godfrey Lisk
I get my RAM from Corsair. I have also bought Kingston's HyperX RAM. Great podcast episode as per usual

  • Gareth and Ted from get nostalgic and novel to the cutting-edge and practical. There's a focus on unique hardware, including the launch of the world's first ceramic mechanical PC keyboard, the introduction of a new BOOX Palma 2 Pro color E Ink e-reader with 5G capabilities, and a $6,000 solar-powered, wind-resistant inflatable camping tent. They also explore future tech with a hands-on look at the Samsung Galaxy XR glasses (and a tease of Android XR), a dive into the controversial use of AI by Channel 4 for a presenter, and the revival of classic computing with an Amiga 1200 pre-order announcement. Finally, Ted discusses software and workflow improvements, specifically praising the changes and benefits of using the Google Keep Chrome Extension for note-taking, alongside Gareth's love for Immich.

Just been listening to the latest Podcast, and got to the bit about Duty Free and paying in. the US. The reason @Gareth Myles that there is a 6% charge is the conversion to GBP plus a charge to do so, you should always pay in the local currency.. And the way they do the duty free collection is the same as what happens across the globe not just the US (had it in Hong Kong) where you collect at the gate... None of this has anything to do with Tariffs. The Departure Lounge is still classed as the US or the country you are in

Ian Barton (Quick mention as now done elsewhere)

Ian was particularly enthused about all things Linux and Open Source so was one of our more active members here in TA. He taught me much about all sorts of tech stuff - a kind chap - very kind - and thoughtful. RIP

Dennis Schreiner on Linux Mint and BeeLink Sluggishness
I just wanted to say that I have a Beelink with Ryzen 5800 U and Linux Mint is not running well for me on it either. I think Mint is the Problem since it switched to Ubuntu. I have since had a lot of performance issues with it. Also in the Top Linux List it's going downhill. I wouldn't now recommend Mint anymore for beginners and low-spec'd PCs. Since I switched my BeeLink to Fedora Linux (KDE Plasma version) it's very smooth-running again. Also Fedora is pretty easy to operate. Bazzite and Nobara are also beginner-friendly with low spec requirements. I'm enjoying TA, thank you :)

    CachyOS

Ujjwal Sehgal on Retroid Pocket Classic

I bought this thinking I'd use it purely for retro gaming but it's starting to become a favourite overall retro gadget. Beautiful OLED touchscreen. Runs Android 14. Google Play store present. Snapdragon G1 Gen 2. 128GB of storage. microSD slot. Icing on the cake is the head phone jack. I find myself using it to listen to music when I'm away from my phone. The squareish screen is great for watching old 4:3 TV content. It kind of feels like what GameBoy could have been if it were released today! I remember using my original PSP in the same way when I was younger. Feels like a nostalgic digital detox device - as the screen aspect ratio is awful for email, WhatsApp or any social media apps!

Amazon is switching its Fire tablets to Android

Malcolm Bryant - 'Open source Android', aka AOSP, is really bare-bones. All OEMs to this point have supplemented AOSP with extra functionality in order to have a viable consumer-facing product. In particular of course there is Google Play Services, which gives access to the Play Store and many other core Android features. Google Play Services is not part of AOSP but it seems extremely unlikely that Amazon would omit it if the intent is to make this tablet a mainstream Android device.

Bloody sun is coming out Sunday here which means I'm going to roast in this tin can (with windows doors shut for noise) or have fans and dogs and trains noise aplenty - so my vote is to get underway asap please!

Camera Creations now has its own website (well, kind of)! I decided to stop paying through the nose for domains and SSL registrations so dumped it, Steve Litchfield style, on my homepage! As he rightly points out, that's what he does with all his stuff and has never had a problem - the RSS feeds are the important bit for the podcast world. Anyway, so it's at tedsalmon.com/cameracreations - bare-bones for now but I'm beginning to agree with Steve - keep it simple. Everyone's on social media now anyway, not websites! I might move all my stuff the same way over time as domains expire etc. I also dumped my main tedsalmon.com site back to basics (from the Google Sites fluffy-look one it has been) - so that also needs work.

    Feedback, Fallout and Contributions

    Phil Wells on Gareth's Rant

I've just listened to the latest episode and am concerned about Gareth's rant. First off...the legislation came into force recently but was enacted some time ago (26 October 2023) under the Conservative Government but time was given for tech companies to react and for the body charged with enforcing it (Ofcom) to get its act together.
As such it should be Michelle Donelan who is the target for the ire as Peter Kyle can only deal with what has been legislated. I would contend that Gareth is guilty of shooting the messenger here.
Turning to age verification and the bit about a Government ID system...off the top of my head I can think of at least 5 Government Departments where I am already uniquely identified....by NI Number, Driver's Licence Number, Passport Number, UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), National Health Number.
None of the departments/systems seem to talk to each other (except that there is a link between Passport and Driving Licence systems for the sharing of pictures) and each stores the same information about me.
Given that everyone is given a NI number around the time of their 16th birthday this would seem to be the logical place for any age verification call to be made. But then again when has logic applied to anything that gets done in this country.

    Ian Barton on Rclone

A kind of super powerful version of rsync. A command-line programme to manage files on cloud storage. It is a feature-rich alternative to cloud vendors' web storage interfaces. Over 70 cloud storage products support rclone including S3 object stores, business and consumer file storage services - as well as standard transfer protocols. Rclone has powerful cloud equivalents to the unix commands rsync, cp, mv, mount, ls, ncdu, tree, rm, and cat.
Rclone's familiar syntax includes shell pipeline support, and --dry-run protection. It is used at the command line, in scripts or via its API. Users call rclone "The Swiss army knife of cloud storage" and "Technology indistinguishable from magic". I use it to download all my documents and photos to a server at home, which makes sure there are at least two backups of every document (there are two computers that each have a backup). Because rclone has so many options it can be difficult at the start. However, some Googling will usually find a script that does what you want.

AJ Santos on YouTube now second only to BBC as media destination

YouTube has become the UK's second most-watched media service, behind only the BBC, according to Ofcom's annual report. 20% of Generation Alpha - aged four to 15 - turn to YouTube first when switching on their SmartTV. People aged over 55 are watching nearly twice as much YouTube as they did two years ago.
