Phil Swan returned to talk about the physics plus economics of using a Variable-Pitch Screw Architecture Mass Driver from Earth to the Moon or Mars. Phil has two papers posted and/or linked through the blog on this subject. Phil spent lots of time going over the physics of his concept, explaining the Variable-Pitch Screw drive, comparing it to rockets and even talking logistics and location for the mass driver on Earth. He is thinking anchored to the ocean floor floating about 20 meters below surface. He got several questions asking him about big ideas that never see the light of day. Others suggested modifications to his screw drive mass driver. Listen to what he had to say about energy transference and kinetic energy. Phil was asked about size and launch location which would maybe polar but also within 22 degrees of the equator north or south. Welcome to our last Open Lines program for 2024. I announced plans for a Zoom program change for when I travel but also for Friday programs. More details will follow as the program launches but the basics are spelled out on this program. Several listeners called in with their 2025 space resolutions or wish lists. See if what the callers said matches your 2025 wish list. Please post on the blog. Ft. Worth John called about the drone situation and both John and myself put forth some ideas as to who is doing what and from where. Marshall called in with his own drone theory. Fremont Rick called in re SpaceX and other matters before us and then Fremont John called us with space settlement on his wish list. This led to a discussion about the National Space Policy, Congress and changing the NASA Charter. From this call, Michael Listner called in re the National Space Policy and his 2015 program that was one of the all time bests on TSS. To have NASA officially focus on space settlement, it would take Congress. Michael explained the process to us and this call then rounded out our program for the day. Dr. Paul Jaffe was back with us for a terrific discussion focusing on power beaming, SSP, grid power, nuclear, thorium, and all forms of energy. Paul made clear the important distinctions between power beaming and SSP. In addition, lots of time was spent looking at the potential economics of SSP which as he said are and will be challenging moving forward. He also made the national security and geopolitical very important point about the benefit of a nation state being to beam power electronically to any country on Earth which would be a huge advantage for them in the Great Power Struggle and Competition we now face. Paul had lots more to say so don't miss this program. Remember, if you like our programs, please donate during our annual campaign to help us fund our 2025 broadcasting year.
