Caregiving isn’t a race—it’s about staying present through every challenge. Talking with Jessica Soodeen, I saw how situational awareness, preparation, and resilience shaped her journey caring for her mother. She shares how staying organized eased the chaos, but also opens up about the emotional toll—PTSD, identity loss, and finding purpose after caregiving ends. Her message is clear: take control where you can, be kind to yourself when you can’t, and never underestimate the power of showing up for the people you love.
About Our Guest:
Jessica Soodeen is no stranger to challenges and faces them head-on! Throughout her personal life and career, she has pushed boundaries and broken barriers. Whether on stage speaking to hundreds, at a racetrack, or an office setting, Jessica has a unique ability to make everyone she encounters feel seen and heard. Her energy, filled with curiosity and wonder, is contagious. Her first career as a mechanical design engineer took her around the world, and her adventurous spirit led her to a new challenge: earning a Master’s degree in Motorsport Race Engineering. This pivot, born from her passion for road racing motorcycles, a hobby she picked up later in life, opened new avenues for her. Jessica has worked as a track-side engineer and driver coach, fully immersing herself in the world of motorsports. She even built her own motors in her living room, pulled wrenches for other teams, and immediately began coaching others on mindset. Now, Jessica uses all these experiences to deliver dynamic keynote speeches that teach emotional and social intelligence lessons uniquely using motorsports analogies. She also facilitates Relational Skills workshops that bring teams together, focusing on problem solving, conflict resolution through civil communication skills, and decision making processes. You can find Jessica Soodeen on LinkedIn for your next AGM, Professional Association Conference, STEM day, or Retreat!

Some moments in life test everything you think you know about your own strength. Roselyn O’Brien Markowitz opens up about navigating the impossible—caring for her husband through an aggressive lymphoma diagnosis while managing her own serious health crises. We, as caregivers, juggle hospital stays, chemotherapy, heart complications, and the emotional weight of it all, but giving up never enters the equation. I see firsthand how caregiving isn’t just about one person helping another—it’s a constant exchange, a balancing act of love, resilience, and sheer willpower. No matter how overwhelming things get, we keep pushing forward, proving that even in the hardest times, we can adapt, learn, and keep showing up for each other.

Are we just supposed to sit back while the safety nets for caregivers and vulnerable people disappear? I won’t, and I hope you won’t either. Meals on Wheels, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are on the chopping block, and a vague tax credit for family caregivers won’t cut it. How will caregivers survive if these lifelines shrink or vanish? I dig into the real consequences, the financial traps, and the blatant attempts to hide critical information from us. This isn’t just politics, it’s survival. If you’re a caregiver or know someone who depends on these programs, it’s time to make some noise. Let’s not just squawk, let’s be heard.

We're bringing back one of our favorite episodes from the archives! Enjoy the episode!
Caregiving is more than a mission—it’s a monumental task that you don’t have to shoulder alone!
Today, I explore the transformative power of stepping back to manage rather than tackling everything single-handedly. It’s a vital lesson I learned: doing more isn’t the solution; managing more effectively is. A caregiving coach once opened my eyes to my 'Care-zilla' mode—where anger and frustration from trying to control everything were running me ragged. Now, I champion delegation and collaboration, essential strategies that turn caregiving from a lone battle into a team effort. Let’s ditch the pride and start creating a support system that lets us all breathe, balance, and thrive with our loved ones.
About Me:
I have cared for many family members across the life span, experiencing the joys and challenges of child-rearing, the poignance of caring for parents, friends, and elder partners. I realized that I could not handle the stress of family caregiving 24/7/365. It was time for a new approach to caring. My health and happiness were slipping away. Life throws curveballs, but Wendy Weber reminds me that we don’t have to face them alone. She shares how leaning into community and asking for help transforms not only our struggles but our growth. Wendy inspires me to see caregiving as an act of love, not just duty and challenges me to let go of the guilt and embrace the strength that comes from being vulnerable. Selfcare isn’t selfish—it’s essential. If you ever feel overwhelmed, remember you’re stronger than you think and more supported than you realize.
About Our Guest:
Wendy Weber, an energy healer and devoted parrot enthusiast, harmonizes her vibrant spirit with a talent for singer-songwriting, amplifying voices, and fostering unity. Wendy brews a unique melody of resilience and empowerment that she’s nurtured through decades of parrot companionship and raising her late daughter who had Down syndrome, then Alzheimer's. Her parody and original songwriting resonates in both healing work and musical expression that has sustained her through adversity to triumph.

When it comes to resolutions, I’m all about keeping it real and keeping it doable. Forget those vague promises that fizzle out by mid-January—what works is setting goals that truly resonate with you and are backed by a solid plan. I’m challenging myself to adopt what I call "sharegiving," where every day I find a way to lighten someone else’s load with an intentional act of kindness. Whether it’s holding the door for someone or stepping up to help a caregiver in need, small acts add up. Let’s flip the script on resolutions this year and focus on making every goal personal, actionable, and tied to the kind of person we really want to be.

You deserve to feel whole while taking care of others. Picture a pie with four slices: financial, emotional, mental, and physical well-being. You need to keep each slice balanced and replenished because caregiving can take a toll on every piece. Financially, set realistic goals and create a budget to avoid future stress. Emotionally, give yourself space to process your feelings—ignoring them only floods your mind later. Mentally, stay creative and organized, even when drained, and physically, don't skip the exercise and habits that keep your energy steady. And here’s the secret ingredient: stories. Share them, hear them, and connect. Together, we can refill each other’s plates and savor the balance of a fulfilling life.

Imagine stepping into a caregiving role with the same clarity and grace you'd bring to your most cherished relationships. Mike Spillman, an international motivational speaker, shares that family caregiving—especially around the holidays—often feels overwhelming, with emotions running high and patience running thin. But Mike believes it doesn’t have to drain you. With his "DIRRT method," which is applicable to any relationship, you can transform the experience for yourself and the loved one you’re caring for. It starts with a clear decision on what you want to accomplish, then identify the roadblocks in your way. Remove those obstacles, and replace them with support that moves you forward. Transformation isn’t instant, but as Mike explains, you’ll feel it as you learn to care with love and self-respect, creating a lasting positive impact for you and those you hold dear. Mike’s mission is to save 100 marriages before the end of 2025. It’s easy to see how caregiving and rational problem-solving make a good pair.

Sometimes life calls you to a purpose you can’t ignore, and for our guest, that purpose means changing lives in Jamaica. Angel, runs an educational institute in the rural belt of Hanover, where they don’t just teach; they rebuild. Kids walk through the doors carrying heavy burdens—abuse, poverty, hopelessness—but they’ve created a safe space where they find emotional support, education, and meals. It’s more than academics; it’s showing them they’re worthy of a future. Seeing their students rise—whether they join the police, nursing, or even university—reminds her why she stays, even when the work is hard. Caregivers come in all forms, including teachers who give more than lessons—they give hope, love, and a second chance at life.
About Our Guest:
Angela Haye hails from Jamaica. She migrated to the United States when she was a young girl where she finished her secondary education. She holds an Associate Degree in Business/Hotel Management from Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, Maryland USA; a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel and Tourism Management and a Master’s Degree in International Marketing and Management from the University of Maryland University College USA. In 2002 she returned to Jamaica where she founded the Hanover Educational Institute in addition to the rotary Club of Green Island, Sunrise, Jamaica, and she sits on several school boards. An eclectic thinker, whose hobbies include dancing, networking, and reading and spending quality time with friends and family, including two beautiful sons, Robert and Brandon. Caregiving doesn’t have to mean losing yourself—think of it as managing with purpose, like a boss. You’re not just there to show love; you’re there to make powerful choices that protect your well-being, too. Embrace rational caregiving by blending compassion with practical strategies: prioritize clear decision-making, time management, and boundaries. It’s about shifting from “caregiver” to “caregive”—a new verb for balancing empathy with action. Recognize your needs, respect your own limits, and embrace respite whenever possible. This approach empowers you and honors both you and your loved one. So why not caregive like a boss?

Chatting with Barbara Newman gave me a new way to look at caregiving, self-care, and the impact of storytelling. Barbara’s path—from working on Madison Avenue to exploring the bold spirit of American cowgirls—shows her belief in what she calls “radical self-care” and the power of community. For her, storytelling isn’t just about telling a tale; it’s a way to heal, share wisdom, and connect people across generations. Whether she’s helping Gen Z find their voices or guiding boomers to tell their life stories, Barbara shows us that giving back doesn’t require us to be heroes. Her advice? Focus on the little things, and above all, be kind.
About Our Guest:
Barbara Newman’s storytelling career began on Madison Avenue, where she was a Creative Director on iconic global brands. Her life changed after hearing a story on NPR about the American cowgirl. She was so inspired by their strong, persevering spirit, that she traded high heels for cowboy boots and headed to Montana to film a documentary about their lives. While out west, she fell in love with the wild landscape, and how it transformed her relationship with the natural world. So began her next chapter as an author. Her award-winning young-adult novel, The Dreamcatcher Codes is her love letter to Mother Earth and all her daughters. She is currently working on her second book.
Barbara is on the Boards of the Berkshire Film and Media Collaborative, the Berkshire International Film Festival, and EmPower Gen Z. She was also part of the think tank for the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media.
