Conjuring painted reflections of the world he encounters with uncompromising honesty and good humour, Dublin-based artist Salvatore of Lucan’s work treads the line between the uncanny and the ultra-familiar. Taking inspiration from the objects that populate his domain and the people he shares it with, his work has been featured in several notable exhibitions, he has been the recipient of numerous awards, and his work has been treasured by both private and public collectors.
We are delighted for Salvatore to join us on the podcast to discuss his initial interest in art, his various painterly inspirations from Egon Schiele to Gerard Dillon, and why oven pizza has to be his death row meal. -

Artist Carl Hickey joins us on our second episode of the podcast to discuss his work and inspiration, thriving in chaos, and why you should never put black in a painting.
As if captured from a height, or from a safe distance shrouded from view, Carl Hickey’s painted compositions depict figures in various states of preoccupation. Piecing together a story from the visual elements, his characters may be engaging in seemingly mundane activities -- operating machinery or absconding from view across a grassy common, they remain oblivious to their painted commemoration by the artist. Often working from videos recorded on his phone of bizarre occurrences around the city or his home, his paintings are fleeting glimpses into a Dublin which is in turns humorous and touching. -
In conjunction with her works in Herman’s upcoming auction and exhibition, Deorad, we meet with artist Carmen Quigley to discuss her practice, her most treasured objects, and the influences informing her work.
Intricate and carefully delineated, the imaginative compositions of Quigley overflow and teem with life. She knots her figures into complex arrangements, surrounded by creatures and invented mythical beings. Natural forms are central to her practice – she is fascinated by the breathing sea, the undergrowth of woodlands, the precedent of the ancient and its echoes in our everyday encounters with the modern world.
