There’s a lot of interesting food advice being given out these days by health and fitness “experts.” One in particular that has stood out to me lately goes something like, “Take a few days each week and go crazy! Eat whatever you want! You don’t want to be too restrictive with your diet!” I’ve learned a lot about this principle in the last few months and today I share my thoughts with you about it. In this episode of the Running Lean podcast, I explain the problem with eating whatever you want and offer a better way to do things.

As runners, we’ve been told over the last 40 years or so that the only way to fuel for running is with carbohydrates. Loads and loads of carbs. The thing is, this approach just doesn’t work for everyone. Some people (like me) gain a lot of weight eating all those carbs, regardless of how much we run. In this episode, I offer an alternative way to fuel long-distance running, one that doesn’t cause you to gain weight in the process.
