Season 6, Episode 13. Gustavo Adolfo Guarín Duque, Trade Counsellor at the Mission of Colombia to the World Trade Organization.
My guest is another Colombian, the nationality most represented in the show, hence the joke!
This is season six's last episode, and I had to close the season with a great guest!
Gustavo is a friend and colleague whose story will inspire you.
While I count Gustavo as a close friend, our conversation revealed new aspects of his life that I found fascinating, and I'm excited for you to listen in.
I was thrilled to host and engage in a profound and insightful conversation with him. We delved into his upbringing in Colombia and his unwavering commitment to his goals despite the challenges.
Gustavo's journey is a powerful testament to resilience and the relentless pursuit of excellence and knowledge.
When I’ve invited him to guest lecture in my classes, I always learned a lot from his patience and knowledge. Now, I know more all this comes from his nature and his nurturing.
This is my conversation with Gustavo.

Season 6, Episode 12. Andres Veiel, Filmmaker.
Andres is a successful filmmaker with a long career stretching back to the early 90’s. I met with him after the screening of his latest film at the Zurich Film Festival, the documentary “Riefenstahl”, which unearths new information on the controversial filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl.
During our conversation, we talked about how he got into films and learned from Krzysztof Kieslowski, and we also talked about memory and the stories we tell ourselves. He discussed the development of his latest film and some of the main challenges in telling this story.
It was a great conversation, and the film may be the definite story of how Riefenstahl's complicated artistic legacy will be viewed.
I am confident you will enjoy this conversation and the film!

Season 6, Episode 11. Johanna Hill, Deputy Director General at the WTO.
DDG Johanna Hill has been involved with the WTO since its inception and has worked directly with it at various points in her career. Her career in multilateral and bilateral affairs is long, and she has also worked in the private sector.
We had an insightful conversation covering a wide range of topics, from her early years in El Salvador to her commitment to education, which led her to Tufts University and Columbia University.
She then worked for El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy, where she was appointed as Vice Minister of Economy.
This solid and long experience has brought her to the WTO, where she now serves as DDG.
It was a pleasure talking to her and hearing more about her story and thoughts on the Multilateral Trade System.
I am confident you will enjoy this conversation!

Season 6, Episode 10. Ambassador Nadia B. Theodore. Mission of Canada to the WTO.
Ambassador Nadia Theodore has been in Geneva for around two years, but she has already made her mark. She is involved in several initiatives, and one of her goals is making the WTO more inclusive and telling the story of the MTS to everyone. And I can say she has really succeeded in that.
We had an insightful and fun conversation, covering her multicultural upbringing, her foray into law, how she experienced the WTO during her first post in Geneva, and how things have changed with her return as Ambassador.
Ambassador Theodore was delightful and graceful, but if you have heard her before you already knew that. I also found out I have a couple of similarities with her. I was thrilled to host her and get to know her better.
You will not want to miss this conversation!

Season 6, Episode 9. Ambassador James Baxter. Mission of Australia to the WTO. Ambassador James Baxter, is a friend of International Trade and Multilateralism who has made his career around the WTO. He is a consummate diplomat who got into Trade and never left. He was posted in Geneva as the Deputy Permanent Representative for the Mission of Australia to the WTO back in 2012, and although he didn’t initially intend to return, he is back as Ambassador with the intention and goal to deliver on many of the pending items we are currently working on at the WTO. Ambassador Baxter provided great insights into the mind of a diplomat, and we had a great conversation. He also provided some great replies to my questionnaire, so listen until the end. Season 6, Episode 8. Jennifer Brant. Founder and Principal at Innovations Insights.
Jennifer heads a boutique consulting firm specializing in strategic communications and government affairs.
If you work in International Geneva, you may encounter Jennifer. I have been following her career due to its intersection with many of the same topics we work on, and I met her a couple of years ago. Due to her experience covering law firms, policy, and the private sector, I wanted to hear more about her journey, and my conversation with her did not disappoint.
Jennifer's career has taken her across the globe, from Sidley Austin LLP in Geneva to Oxfam in Washington, D.C., and Geneva, and Gianni Origoni & Partners in Milan. Her experiences are not just stories but a treasure trove of valuable insights that will captivate and inspire you.
In this episode, we delve into her experiences in global policy research and advocacy, her work on World Trade Organization dispute settlement and policy, and the lessons she learned at UCLA, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and the Geneva Graduate Institute.
Engaging in a conversation with Jennifer was an absolute joy, and I'm confident you'll be equally captivated with this episode.

Season 6, Episode 7. Dmitry Grozoubinski. Executive Director at Geneva Trade Platform in Geneva.
Dmitry wears many hats, including author and overall point of reference for International Trade. If you want to learn more about Trade, you will probably run into him.
Before all this, he had a successful career as an Australian Trade Diplomat, where I met him. I found out we are sort of kindred spirits. We both appreciate a good Aaron Sorkin dialogue and are both introverts. Many people find this last part difficult to believe.
We talk about many things: his journey to Australia, why he became interested in International Relations, his experiences at the WTO, how he transitioned to the ICTSD, and how he suffered its demise. This actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise, leading him to become a personality in social media. All this led him to his current position at the Geneva Trade Platform.
We also delve into his latest book, “Why Politicians Lie About Trade... and What You Need to Know About It!” This book, with its unique voice and ability to simplify complex concepts, is a must-read for anyone interested in trade policy.
This was a great conversation, and all the credit goes to Dmitry.

Season 6, Episode 6. Pablo M. Bentes is a partner at Baker McKenzie Geneva and heads the firm's global WTO disputes practice. I've known Pablo for a while and I even shared his office while at the WTO's Appellate Body. One of the things I was glad to find there was the sense of camaraderie; it was like a big family. So, we had to talk about that, but I wanted to cover much more than that since Pablo has had an exciting career beyond that.We discussed how he left Brazil to study and his experiences working abroad, eventually leading him to the WTO. We also talked about what led to his decision to leave the WTO, which I found very interesting. Pablo's successful career is a testament to his hard work, knowledge, and being in the right place at the right time. I had a blast talking to him; he did a great job with the questionnaire.I am confident you will enjoy our conversation!Subscribe if you still haven't!--The Rodolfo Rivas Project is available on all major platforms or wherever you get your podcasts. Season 6, Episode 5. Anna Morawiec Mansfield. Legal Counsel at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
I recently met Anna and was so impressed that I had to invite her to the podcast. Even then, I could not have imagined the amazing conversation we would have. I have been doing this for a while, but a few conversations have really stood out, and this is one of them.
Anna's story is a testament to resilience, determination, and character. Like many immigrants, she has faced numerous challenges, but as Anna herself describes it, overcoming challenges is her and many immigrants' superpower.
Anna tells us about growing up in Poland and moving to the United States. Then, before going to law school, she worked in many places, always with an international outlook, and eventually decided that law school would give her the tools to continue pursuing what she really wanted to do. Then, almost as if she was destined to, she made it to the State Department, which eventually brought her to Geneva. After a few years, she moved to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). I talked to her a few days after the successful conclusion of the WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge.
I was truly inspired by Anna's story, and I look forward to sharing it with you. I can't wait for you to listen to this.

I can't believe it has been 70 already!I do these for myself because I love doing them, but it is great to hear when people reach out to say they enjoy them. Thanks to everyone who has reached out; I really appreciate it.Ana has worked in International Trade for many years, including in the private sector, the government, and in diplomacy in Geneva for the last few years. This is where I met her. Although we have been in the same circles for several years, I haven't worked much with her, so I looked forward to our conversation. We talked about International Trade, Diplomacy, the work she has been doing in the Trade and Environmental Sustainability Structured Discussions (TESSD) at the WTO, and also about movies, which I want to explore further with my guests.Time flew by during our conversation, and Ana was a delight. It was an insightful and fun conversation, but don't take my word for it. Season 6, Episode 2. Miguel Antonio Villamizar Parra. Counsellor Legal Affairs at the World Trade Organization. WTO.Continuing with our second season, I had the pleasure of hosting Miguel Villamizar, who is likely among one of the most well-liked individuals in International Trade. When you meet him, you will know what I am talking about, and after listening to this conversation, you will likely agree with me.I didn't know this, but Miguel has been listening to the podcast for some time, so having him as a guest was a pleasure. I have wanted to invite him for a while; I am glad I finally did!I was happy to stroll down memory lane and listen to Miguel's journey. We covered how he got interested in International Economic Law after briefly flirting with Marine Biology! There is also much more he talks about, including the formative experience coaching the wunderkind team at the John Jackson Moot Court and how he got to the World Trade Organization. It was a great episode, but don't take my word for it. Season 5 Episode 12. Kilian Riedhof, Award-winning Filmmaker known for "Gladbeck" (2018), “You Will Not Have My Hate" (2022), and his latest "Stella. A Life." (2023), which stars Berlinale best actress award-winner Paula Beer.
Kilian is a multi-talented Director and writer who studied at the Hamburg Film School. He was at the Zurich Film Festival to present his latest film, and that is when I had the pleasure to sit down with him to discuss his career, his craft, his latest film, and also a bit about what he is working on next.
As you know, I love films, and I enjoyed talking about films, techniques, storytelling, and some of the challenges faced when making a film and working as a filmmaker.
Kilian is a master of his craft and a delightful individual. I highly recommend watching his film, which has been a long-gestating project that he finally got to make.
It was a great conversation, and I can't wait for you to listen to it!

Season 5 Episode 11. Tayutic Mena, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the World Trade Organization (WTO).Tayutic is a seasoned veteran among the delegates dealing with the WTO. I have been working with him for many years, and we have worked together in many negotiations, including the ITA expansion, EGA, and TiSA. Since then, he has become a celebrity in the WTO, thanks to his involvement in agriculture, a topic that is close to his heart, and by the way he describes it, it should be close to everyone's heart. In our conversation, we covered a lot; from his background, growing up in Costa Rica, he talks about Costa Rica's strong interest in multilateralism and how they have decided to double down and be heard across all multilateral initiatives, successfully punching above its weight. Our conversation was insightful, refreshing, and fun!Tayutic is a class act and a pretty interesting individual. It was a great conversation, and I can't wait for you to listen to it!Subscribe if you still need to!#TheRodolfoRivasProject #podcast #WTO #interview #costarica #conversation #internationaltrade #international #geneva #economist #conversations--The Rodolfo Rivas Project is available on all major platforms or wherever you get your podcasts. Season 5 Episode 10 – Willy Alfaro, Director, Vision & Strategy at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Willy has been in Geneva and the WTO since the GATT days and has had a vibrant experience across the WTO, serving in different capacities across various divisions.
Everyone knows Willy, and this is because he is a very knowledgeable and friendly person who, in terms of the Multilateral Trading System, has seen it all.
We discussed some influences in his decision to study at the University of Geneva, how he got involved in International Trade, how the GATT has evolved into the WTO, and how the organization has changed. We also discuss some of the challenges ahead and how trade is part of the solution.
It was a great conversation, and I can't wait for you to listen to it!

Season 5 Episode 09 – Barbara Ramos, Director, Chief, Research and Strategies for Exports at International Trade Centre (ITC).I've had plenty of interesting guests in the over 60 episodes across five seasons, and yet, Barbara stands out amongst them with a vibrant story spanning continents and experiences.Barbara, originally from Brazil, was attracted to International Relations early and has run at it since. She's worked at two Development Banks, an Embassy, and USAID, while also studying at The Fletcher School at Tufts University before joining ITC a few years ago. This is just the CliffsNotes; there's a lot more.We talked about Latin America, Africa, the UN, academia, soccer, and everything in between! She also provides some great replies to the new section in the podcast!Barbara was a delight, and I was thrilled to talk to her in what I can guarantee you is an episode you don't want to miss.I can't wait for you to listen to this one!Subscribe if you still need to!I hope you enjoy our conversation.--The Rodolfo Rivas Project is available on all major platforms or wherever you get your podcasts. Season 5 Episode 08 – Nir Baranga, Director, Trade in Services and Investment Department at the Foreign Trade Administration of the Ministry of Economy, Israel.
Nir is one of my earliest colleagues at the Ministry. We started around the same time and remain kicking and screaming. He is a frontline negotiator leading bilateral, plurilateral, and multilateral services negotiations for Israel.
When he visits Geneva, we usually talk about many things besides trade, and podcasts are one of them. We have wanted to do this podcast for some time, but fitting it into our busy schedules has been challenging.
Luckily, during his last visit to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the ongoing Joint Initiative on e-commerce, we managed to find some time to talk and record this interesting conversation covering his professional career and how his career path has changed a couple of times, and how in hindsight it all makes sense.
He also provides an insightful view into what it means to be an International trade negotiator going back to the Trade in Services Agreement negotiation (TiSA), which was one of his first experiences in International trade negotiations.
We could have also talked about many other things, but perhaps those conversations are left for another episode.
I am working on a couple of episodes, so stay tuned.
I can't wait for you to listen to this one!

Season 5 Episode 07 – Geraldo Vidigal, Coordinator, LL.M. International Trade and Investment Law, University of Amsterdam.
Geraldo, although young, is a veteran of the International Trade world. Ask anyone interested in trade, and they will know of him. I have known Geraldo for a long time, with our professional careers running in parallel.
I had the opportunity to sit down with Geraldo during his last visit to Geneva, and the conversation was a blast! We covered his origin story and how his career has evolved, and at every stage of it, he was confident of being at the best place he should be at that precise moment. It may appear he took the scenic route, but he got to where he wanted to get all along.
We also got into some nitty-gritty of trade, but if trade is not your thing, there are plenty of other aspects worth listening to.
Geraldo also takes a stab at the new section of the podcast, and he does a great job at it. Stick to the end to listen to that.
There are a couple of episodes in the pipeline, so stay tuned.
