Did you know that the dynamics of our family of origin determines the quality of our relationships? But did you also know that it also determines our level of success and finances that we will have in our lives? I often talk about the hidden dynamics that are underpinning the challenges that we have in our lives as the most critical things to address rather than focussing on addressing the symptom as that only scratches the surface! For me this is the most powerful podcast that I have done so far, you can't miss it!

Published through Ingram and available through Amazon and all major booksellers, the book is written for anyone looking to re-evaluate or improve their intimate relationship and it’s full of practical wisdom and concepts gleaned from the many years of work that Matt has undertaken alongside his wife Rebeca supporting couples and individuals to have relationships that really serve them.
“The book is partly autobiographical in that it reveals some of the challenges that I went through in making sense of the toxic relationship that I found myself in. It took time to make sense of that and the support, mentoring and coaching that I had through that process was truly life changing.” Matt explains.
Matt is joined today by Rhys Thomas who is a keynote speaker and mental health advocate and who is going to be joining the launch event for the book. You can find out more about his work at:

When Hollie Gazzard went into the hair salon in Gloucester where she worked on 18 February 2014, she had little idea of the tragic events that were about to unfold. Although after months of obsessive behaviour, jealousy, and harassment from her partner… and having finally ENDED the relationship days earlier she may have had some trepidation.
Following her horrific murder, the family, Nick, Amanda and Chloe, wanted something positive to come out of the loss and set up the Hollie Gazzard Trust not only to help other victims but to raise funds to support young people. Hollie had suffered from domestic abuse, violence and stalking in the time leading up to her death and tackling these issues is at the forefront of the work they do.
The charity has made it a key aim to develop programmes and tools to help those experiencing domestic abuse and to promote healthy relationships, particularly providing education in schools and colleges.
Today we’re joined by Hollie’s dad Nick who has pioneered work in his daughter’s name to help countless others avoid experiencing the same challenges that his own family has gone through.
We are going to be looking at:
- How to spot the early signs of abusive and manipulative behaviour
- What are the danger signs of things escalating out of control, and how we can take action early to avoid this
- The range of abusive or toxic behaviour from the milder to more extreme end of the scale
- What you can do if you suspect that you are in a toxic or controlling relationship
Find out more about the Hollie Gazzard Trust at: https://holliegazzard.org/ You can see how you can get involved, access workshops and programmes and get involved through volunteering and fundraising. -
Do you ever find yourself overcome by strong emotions, even where they might be too much and you struggle to function day-to-day?
Do you ever feel stuck with emotions where we’re trying to reconcile an overpowering experience of what’s happening and then before long we’re feeling quite different about the situation?
In this episode Matt shares some insights into how we can stay in touch with our emotions without being overtaken by them:
- How we choose different meanings, which lead to us creating our emotional experience
- How different people adopt completely different understandings of the same events, leading them into a very different experience
- How we manage our energy day-to-day our body “budget” by estimating the energy needed for given activities, and what happens when we are unable to plan in that way
- Do animals experience emotions, or something else?
- Where does stress come from, and how can we better regulate our stress?
- How meditation teaches us to be present in the moment, noticing sensations and releasing them.

In this first session in the 4 part series Matt looks at what we mean by MINDSET and why it's such an important building block of the work we are doing.
- what happens if we are stuck thinking that we are helpless to improve our situation
- what we can learn from the field of sports and training when it comes to conditioning ourself
- why we might want to consider our mindset while we still have time to work on it
- using the power of team and modelling other people and characters that have skills and qualities that we admire
There was also a meditation delivered in the live session that is NOT in the podcast (as we know many people listen while driving). Clients can obtain that from the team.

When we’re struggling in our relationship one of the ways we might experience it is that things are outside of our control.
And while we might be really affected by a sense that things are not in our control, we’ve got to navigate the journey with this other person who has their own ideas, values and priorities.
Today we’re joined by anxiety expert Daniel Farmer who is an avid student and practitioner of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Having had such success using these skills in supporting his own journey he now helps others dealing with anxiety and negative thought patterns.
We're going to be looking at:
- How to ensure that we don’t create the thing that we fear the most through our focus on thoughts that are potentially neither helpful nor true
- What is ‘negativity bias’ and how could it be affecting our behaviour without us even knowing it?
- The circular relationship between thoughts, emotions and behaviours and how we can get ‘more of the same stuff’ in a vicious cycle if we are not able to intervene
- Looking at whether ‘achieving control’ could become part of the problem, rather than a kind of solution
- How we can identify our disempowering thoughts and choosing not to engage with them, so that we avoid damaging safety-seeking reactions
